Bekantan dalam bahasa latin (ilmiah) disebut Nasalis larvatus, sedang dalam bahasa inggris disebut Long-Nosed Monkey atau Proboscis Monkey. Di negara-negara lain disebut dengan beberapa nama seperti Kera Bekantan (Malaysia), Bangkatan (Brunei), Neusaap (Belanda). Masyarakat Kalimantan sendiri memberikan beberapa nama pada spesies kera berhidung panjang ini seperti Kera Belanda, Pika, Bahara Bentangan, Raseng dan Kahau.
Bekantan yang merupakan satu dari dua spesies anggota Genus Nasalis ini sebenarnya terdiri atas dua subspesies yaitu Nasalis larvatus larvatus dan Nasalis larvatus orientalis. Nasalis larvatus larvatus terdapat dihampir seluruh bagian pulau Kalimantan sedangkan Nasalis larvatus orientalis terdapat di bagian timur laut dari Pulau Kalimantan.
Binatang yang oleh IUCN Redlist dikategorikan dalam status konservasi “Terancam” (Endangered) merupakan satwa endemik pulau Kalimantan. Satwa ini dijadikan maskot (fauna identitas) provinsi Kalimantan Selatan berdasarkan SK Gubernur Kalsel No. 29 Tahun 1990 tanggal 16 Januari 1990. Selain itu, satwa ini juga menjadi maskot Dunia Fantasi Ancol.
Ciri-ciri dan Habitat Bekantan. Hidung panjang dan besar pada Bekantan (Nasalis larvatus) hanya dimiliki oleh spesies jantan. Kera betina lebih memilih jantan dengan hidung besar sebagai pasangannya. Karena hidungnya inilah, bekantan dikenal juga sebagai Monyet Belanda.
Bekantan jantan berukuran lebih besar dari betina. Ukurannya dapat mencapai 75 cm dengan berat mencapai 24 kg. Kera Bekantan betina berukuran sekitar 60 cm dengan berat 12 kg. Spesies ini juga memiliki perut yang besar (buncit). Perut buncit ini sebagai akibat dari kebiasaan mengkonsumsi makanannya yang selain mengonsumsi buah-buahan dan biji-bijian mereka juga memakan dedaunan yang menghasilkan banyak gas pada waktu dicerna.
Bekantan (Nasalis larvatus) hidup secara berkelompok. Masing-masing kelompok dipimpin oleh seekor Bekantan jantan yang besar dan kuat. Biasanya dalam satu kelompok berjumlah sekitar 10 sampai 30 ekor. Satwa yang dilindungi ini lebih banyak menghabiskan waktu di atas pohon. Walaupun demikian Bekantan juga mampu berenang dan menyelam dengan baik, terkadang terlihat berenang menyeberang sungai atau bahkan berenang dari satu pulau ke pulau lain.
Seekor Bekantan betina mempunyai masa kehamilan sekitar166 hari atau 5-6 bulan dan hanya melahirkan 1 (satu) ekor anak dalam sekali masa kehamilan. Anak Bekantan ini akan bersama induknya hingga menginjak dewasa (berumur 4-5 tahun). Habitat Bekantan (Nasalis larvatus) masih dapat dijumpai di beberapa lokasi antara lain di Suaka Margasatwa (SM) Pleihari Tanah Laut, SM Pleihari Martapura, Cagar Alam (CA) Pulau Kaget, CA Gunung Kentawan, CA Selat Sebuku dan Teluk Kelumpang. Juga terdapat di pinggiran Sungai Barito, Sungai Negara, Sungai Paminggir, Sungai Tapin, Pulau Bakut dan Pulau Kembang.
Konservasi Bekantan. Bekantan (Nasalis larvatus) oleh IUCN Redlist sejak tahun 2000 dimasukkan dalam status konservasi kategori Endangered (Terancam Kepunahan) setelah sebelumnya masuk kategori “Rentan” (Vulnerable; VU). Selain itu Bekantan juga terdaftar pada CITES sebagai Apendix I (tidak boleh diperdagangkan secara internasional). Pada tahun 1987 diperkirakan terdapat sekitar 260.000 Bekantan di Pulau Kalimantan saja tetapi pada tahun 2008 diperkirakan jumlah itu menurun drastis dan hanya tersisa sekitar 25.000. Hal ini disebabkan oleh banyaknya habitat yang mulai beralih fungsi dan kebakaran hutan.
