Seribu seratus tahun sebelum Einstein mencetuskan teori relativitas, ilmuwan Muslim di abad ke-9 M telah meletakkan dasar-dasar teori relativitas, ialah saintis dan filosof bernama Al-Kindi yang mencetuskan teori itu. Selanjutnya, dunia sains modern di awal abad ke-20 M dibuat takjub oleh penemuan seorang ilmuwan Yahudi Jerman bernama Albert Einstein. Pada tahun 1905, Einstein mempublikasikan teori relativitas khusus (special relativity theory). Satu dasawarsa kemudian, Einstein yang didaulat majalah Time sebagai tokoh abad 20 itu, mencetuskan teori relativitas umum (general relativity theory).
Yusuf Ibnu Ishaq Al-Kindi adalah seorang ilmuwan Muslim jenius yang hidup di era Dinasti Abbasiyah berkuasa di Baghdad. Tidak kurang dari lima periode khalifah dilaluinya, yaitu Al-Amin (809-813), Al-Ma’mun (813-833), Al-Mu’tasim (833-842), Al-Wasiq (842-847), dan Al-Mutawakil (847-861). Kepandaian dan kemampuannya dalam menguasai berbagai ilmu, termasuk kedokteran, membuatnya diangkat menjadi guru dan tabib kerajaan. Khalifah juga mempercayainya untuk berkiprah di Baitul Hikmah yang kala itu gencar menerjemahkan buku-buku ilmu pengetahuan dari berbagai bahasa, seperti Yunani, Romawi dan Persia.
Relatifitas Waktu Menurut Al-Kindi
Dalam salah satu karyanya yang berjudul Al-Falsafa al-Ula, Al-Kindi telah mengungkapkan dasar-dasar teori relativitas.
Al-Kindi menulis:
“Relativitas, adalah esensi dari hukum eksistensi. Waktu, ruang, gerakan, dan benda, semuanya relatif dan tidak absolut.”
Namun, ilmuwan Barat seperti Galileo, Descartes, dan Newton, menganggap semua fenomena itu sebagai sesuatu yang absolut. Hanya Einstein yang sepaham dengan Al-Kindi.
Al-Kindi juga menulis:
“Waktu hanya eksis dengan gerakan; benda dengan gerakan; gerakan dengan benda, . . . jika ada gerakan, di sana perlu benda; jika ada sebuah benda, di sana perlu gerakan.”
Dalam Al-Falsafa al-Ula, Al-Kindi mencontohkan seseorang melihat sebuah objek yang ukurannya lebih kecil atau lebih besar menurut pergerakan vertikal antara bumi dan langit. Jika orang itu naik ke atas langit, dia melihat pohon-pohon lebih kecil. Jika dia bergerak ke bumi, dia melihat pohon-pohon itu jadi lebih besar.
Al-Kindi berkesimpulan:
“Kita tidak dapat mengatakan bahwa sesuatu itu kecil atau besar secara absolut. Tetapi, kita dapat mengatakan bahwa sesuatu itu lebih kecil atau lebih besar dalam hubungan kepada objek yang lain.”
Relatifitas Waktu Menurut Sains Modern
Saat ini, relativitas waktu adalah fakta yang terbukti secara ilmiah. Hal ini telah diungkapkan melalui teori relativitas waktu Einstein di tahun-tahun awal abad ke-20. Sebelumnya, manusia belumlah mengetahui bahwa waktu adalah sebuah konsep yang relatif, dan waktu dapat berubah tergantung keadaannya. Ilmuwan besar, Albert Einstein, secara terbuka membuktikan fakta ini dengan teori relativitas. Ia menjelaskan bahwa waktu ditentukan oleh massa dan kecepatan. Dalam sejarah manusia, tak seorang pun mampu mengungkapkan fakta ini dengan jelas sebelumnya, kecuali Al-Kindi yang terinspirasi dari Al Qur'an.
Fakta bahwa waktu bersifat relatif didukung juga oleh ahli fisika terpenting di abad ke-20, Albert Einstein. Lincoln Barnett, dalam bukunya The Universe and Dr. Einstein (Alam Semesta dan Dr. Einstein) menulis :
Karena waktu terdiri atas persepsi, maka waktu bergantung sepenuhnya pada orang yang merasakannya. Karena itulah waktu bersifat relatif.
Kecepatan waktu mengalir akan berbeda berdasarkan acuan yang digunakan untuk mengukurnya, karena tubuh manusia tidak memiliki jam alami yang dapat menentukan secara tepat kecepatan waktu berjalan. Seperti yang ditulis Lincoln Barnett: “Sebagaimana tidak ada warna bila tak ada mata untuk melihatnya, tidak ada pula ukuran sesaat, sejam atau sehari bila tak ada kejadian untuk menandainya”.2
Untuk lebih memahami waktu bersifat relatif, kita bisa mengambil contoh menggunakan paradox waktu dua bersaudara, yang satu melakukan perjalanan keluar angkasa dan yang satunya menetap di bumi menunggu saudaranya pulang ke bumi. Lincoln Barnett mengumpamakannya sebagai berikut :
Kebenaran Mutlak Al Qur'an Mengenai Relatifnya Waktu
Al Qur'an telah membenarkan fakta tentang waktu yang bersifat relatif, inilah ayat yang membuktikan bahwa waktu bersifat relatif dan tidak pasti sama:
"Dan mereka meminta kepadamu agar azab itu disegerakan, padahal Allah sekali-kali tidak akan menyalahi janji-Nya. Sesungguhnya sehari di sisi Tuhanmu adalah seperti seribu menurut perhitunganmu." (Al Qur'an, 22:47)
"Dia mengatur urusan dari langit ke bumi, kemudian (urusan) itu naik kepada-Nya dalam satu hari yang kadarnya adalah seribu tahun menurut perhitunganmu." (Al Qur'an, 32:5)
"Malaikat-malaikat dan Jibril naik (menghadap) kepada Tuhan dalam sehari yang kadarnya limapuluh ribu tahun." (Al Qur'an, 70:4)
Dalam ayat lainnya disebutkan bahwa manusia merasakan waktu secara berbeda, dan bahwa terkadang manusia dapat merasakan waktu sangat singkat sebagai sesuatu yang lama:
"Allah bertanya: 'Berapa tahunkah lamanya kamu tinggal di bumi?' Mereka menjawab: 'Kami tinggal (di bumi) sehari atau setengah hari, maka tanyakanlah kepada orang-orang yang menghitung.' Allah berfirman: 'Kamu tidak tinggal (di bumi) melainkan sebentar saja, kalau kamu sesungguhnya mengetahui'." (Al Qur'an, 23:122-114)
Fakta bahwa relativitas waktu disebutkan dengan sangat jelas dalam Al Qur'an, yang mulai diturunkan pada tahun 610 M, adalah bukti lain bahwa Al Qur'an adalah Kitab Suci.
