Narasi Musa serta Khidr dituturkan dalam Al-Qur'an dalam Surah Al-Kahf ayat 65-82.
Menurut Ibnu Abbas, Ubay bin Kaab, bercerita, beliau mendengar Nabi Muhammad bersabda : " Sesungguhnya disuatu hari, Musa berdiri di khalayak Bani Israil lalu beliau di bertanya, Siapakah orang yang paling berilmu?
Nabi Musa menjawab, " Saya ". Lalu Allah SWT menegur Nabi Musa dengan firman-Nya, " Sesungguhnya di sisi-Ku ada seorang hamba yang ada di pertemuan dua lautan serta dia lebih berilmu daripada anda ".
Lantas Musa juga ajukan pertanyaan, " Wahai Tuhanku, dimanakah saya dapat menemuinya? ".
Allah juga berfirman, " Bawalah bersamaan anda seekor ikan di dalam sangkar dan semisalnya ikan itu hilang, di situlah anda akan bersua dengan hamba-Ku itu. "
Sesungguhnya teguran Allah itu mencetuskan hasrat yang kuat dalam diri Nabi Musa untuk menjumpai hamba yang saleh itu.
Diluar itu, Nabi Musa juga ingin sekali tekuni pengetahuan dari Hamba Allah itu. Musa lantas menunaikan perintah Allah itu dengan membawa ikan di dalam wadah serta pergi bersamaan pembantunya yang juga yaitu murid serta pembantunya, Yusya bin Nun.
Mereka berdua pada akhirnya sampai di satu batu serta memutuskan untuk beristirahat sebentar karena telah melalui perjalanan cukup jauh.
Ikan yang mereka bawa di dalam wadah itu mendadak meronta-ronta serta kemudian terjatuh ke air. Allah SWT membikinkan aliran air untuk memudahkan ikan sampai ke laut.
Yusya terpegun memperhatikan kebesaran Allah menghidupkan pada awalnya ikan yang telah mati itu.
Selepas lihat momen yang sungguh mengagumkan dan mempesona itu, Yusya tertidur dan waktu terbangun, beliau lupa untuk menceritakannya pada Musa.
Mereka lantas melanjutkan lagi perjalanan siang serta
malamnya serta pada besok paginya, Nabi Musa berkata pada Yusya` " Bawalah ke mari makanan kita, sebenarnya kita telah merasa letih lantaran perjalanan kita ini. " (Surah Al-Kahfi : 62)
Ibn `Abbas berkata, " Nabi Musa sebenarnya tidak merasa letih sampai baginda lewat tempat yang diperintahkan oleh Allah supaya menjumpai hamba-Nya yang lebih berilmu itu. "
Yusya berkata pada Nabi Musa, " Tahukah guru bila waktu kita mencari tempat berlindung di batu tadi, sesungguhnya saya lupa (bercerita tentang) ikan itu serta tak lain yang buat saya lupa untuk menceritakannya kecuali syaitan serta ikan itu kembali masuk dalam laut itu melalui langkah yang begitu aneh. " (Surah Al-Kahfi : 63)
Musa segera teringat satu hal, bila mereka sebetulnya sudah dapatkan tempat pertemuan dengan hamba Allah yang tengah dicarinya itu. Sekarang ini, kedua-dua mereka berbalik arah untuk kembali ke tempat itu yaitu di batu sebagai tempat persinggahan mereka lebih dahulu, tempat bersuanya dua buah lautan. Musa berkata, " Itu tempat yang kita mencari. Lalu keduanya kembali, ikuti jejak mereka awal mulanya. " (Surah Al-Kahfi : 64)
Setibanya mereka di tempat yang dituju, mereka saksikan seorang hamba Allah yang berjubah putih bersih. Nabi Musa juga mengatakan salam padanya.
Khidir menjawab salamnya serta ajukan pertanyaan, " Dari tempat mana datangnya kesejahteraan di bumi yg tak mempunyai kesejahteraan? Siapakah anda " Jawab Musa, " Saya yakni Musa ".
Khidir kemukakan pertanyaan lagi, " Musa dari Bani Israil? " Nabi Musa menjawab, " Ya. Saya datang menjumpai tuan supaya tuan dapat mengajarkan sebagian pengetahuan serta kebijaksanaan yang telah di ajarkan pada tuan. "
Khidir menyatakan, " Sebenarnya anda sekali-kali tidak akan dapat bersabar bersama-samaku. @ (Surah Al-Kahfi : 67)
Wahai Musa, " sebenarnya pengetahuan yang kumiliki ini yaitu sebahagian daripada pengetahuan karunia dari Allah yang di ajarkan kepadaku tetapi tidak di ajarkan padamu wahai Musa. Anda juga memiliki pengetahuan yang di sampaikan padamu yg tak kuketahuinya. "
Nabi Musa berkata, " Insya Allah tuan akan merasakan diriku sebagai seorang yang sabar serta saya tidak akan menentang tuan dalam satu hal permasalahan juga. " (Surah Al-Kahfi : 69).
Dia (Khidir) kemudian mengingatkan, " Apabila anda mengikutiku, jadi jangan pernah anda ajukan pertanyaan kepadaku tentang satu hal juga sampai saya sendiri menjelaskannya padamu. " (Surah Al-Kahfi : 70).
