Ada pula pendapat yang menyebutkan bahwa kesurupan adalah sebuah serangan pada sistem limbic (set struktur otak) yang mengatur perilaku, emosi, dan tindakan. Sistem limbic ini antara lain meliputi organ hipokampus, amigdala, nukleus, thalamic anterior, septum, korteks limbik, dan juga forniks.
Pada saat emosi seseorang terganggu dan sedang mengalami masalah sosial tertentu akan memicu munculnya rangsangan yang bisa mempengaruhi sistem limbic ini. Hal tersebut yang memicu munculnya kekacauan dari neurotransmitter yang akhirnya dapat menyebabkan perubahan perilaku individu.
Kesurupan termasuk gejala masalah kejiwaan
Para ahli juga mengaitkan kesurupan dengan gejala kejiwaan yang terjadi karena refleksi kekacauan di tengah masyarakat. Bila kekacauan tersebut disebabkan oleh alasan yang jelas, maka seseorang akan dengan mudah melewatinya. Namun bila penyebabnya abstrak, itulah yang membuat seseorang mengalami gejala kejiwaan ini.
Dalam psikologi abnormal, kesurupan disebut trans dissosiatif yang berarti perubahan kesadaran dalam waktu singkat atau juga kondisi hilangnya perasaan terhadap identitas diri tanpa ada kemunculan identitas baru. Juga ada yang menyebutnya dengan trans possession dissosiatif atau pergantian identitas diri dengan identitas baru.
Dari fakta-fakta di atas sebenarnya sudah terlihat jelas bahwa kesurupan itu bukan semata-mata dikarenakan adanya mahluk halus yang memasuki tubuh seseorang, melainkan gejala-gejala medis yang tentu saja bisa diatasi dengan bantuan profesional medis atau psikiater.
