Kanjeng Ratu Kidul adalah sosok legendaris yang dipercaya sebagai penguasa Laut Selatan oleh masyarakat di Pulau Jawa dan Bali. Kebanyakan, Kanjeng Ratu Kidul ini disamakan dengan Nyi Roro Kidul padahal keduanya adalah dua sosok yang berbeda.
Dalam sejarah Keraton Surakarta, kanjeng Ratu Kidul ini disebut dengan nama Kanjeng Ratu Ayu Kencono Sari yang memiliki kesaktian tiada tara dan mampu berubah wujud untuk bertemu atau menemui seseorang yang dikehendakinya di daratan.
Uniknya, ada beberapa versi mengenai asal usul dari Kanjeng Ratu Kidul ini, namun versi mana yang benar, sampai sekarang belum ada yang mengklaim sebagai yang paling orisinil. Berikut ini adalah beberapa versi terkait asal-usul Kanjeng Ratu Kidul.

Menurut sebagian besar masyarakat Sunda, Kanjeng Ratu Kidul adalah titisan dari putri Pajajaran bernama Putri Kadita (Dewi Srengenge) yang diusir dari kerajaan karena menderita penyakit akhibat diguna-guna oleh penyihir dan membuat malu anggota keluarga. Karena merasa kecewa dan sedih, akhirnya dia mengakhiri hidupnya dengan cara menceburkan diri ke Pantai Selatan. Jika masyarakat Sunda menyebut bahwa putri tersebut Kanjeng Ratu Kidul, menurut masyarakat Jawa, justru putri itu bukanlah sang kanjeng ratu, melainkan pesuruhnya yang dikenal juga dengan nama Nyi Roro Kidul.

Dalam serat Darmogandul dan Serat Centini ada penyebutan seorang penguasa Laut Selatan yang juga menjadi ratu para makhluk halus di lautan dan daratan sepanjang Pulau Jawa yang dikenal dengan nama Ni Mas Ratu Anginangin. Dalam Serat Centhini mengisahkan bahwa Ni Mas Ratu Anginangin yang juga dikenal sebagai Kanjeng Ratu Kidul ini adalah tunangan dari Aji Saka yang mana pertemuan keduanya diperantarai oleh Jaka Linglung.

Ada juga versi lain terkait asal usul Kanjeng Ratu Kidul ini, yaitu sang ratu yang sebenarnya adalah anak dari Ratu Bilqis atau seorang ratu yang berhasil ditaklukkan oleh Raja Sulaiman. Sebelum takluk dari Raja Sulaiman, Ratu Bilqis memiliki seorang putri yang dinamakan Aurora yang mana diasingkan ke sebuah pulau di timur bernama Al Jawi dan menetap serta menjadi ratu para lelembut di daerah tersebut. Sayangnya, legenda satu ini masih dipertanyakan keontetikannya.

Pada zaman dahulu ada beberapa dewi dari khayangan yang turun ke bumi untuk mandi. Di saat yang sama, jaka Tarub berhasil mencuri salah satu selendang dari seorang dewi yang bernama Nawang Mulan. Karena tidak dapat kembali ke khayangan, singkat cerita dia menikah dengan Jaka Tarub. Bertahun-tahun menikah, Nawang Mulan menemukan kembali selendangnya dan kembali ke khayangan. Sayangnya ketika kembali, dia justru diusir karena dianggap tidak suci lagi. Karena kecewa dan sedih, dia menceburkan diri ke Pantai Selatan dan menjadi penguasa di sana.

Jika rata-rata banyak cerita yang mengatakan bahwa Kanjeng Ratu Kidul berasal dari Pulau Jawa, namun ternyata ada juga versi dari Batak. Dalam cerita masyarakat Batak, pada zaman dahulu ada seorang putra raja bernama Guru Tatea Bulan yang memiliki 11 anak (5 putra dan 6 putri). Salah satu dari putrinya bernama Biding Laut. Biding Laut memiliki sifat yang baik dan juga cantik parasnya. Karena lebih disayang oleh sang ayah, hal tersebut membuat iri saudara-saudaranya yang lain. Singkat cerita dia ditipu dengan ditinggalkan di sebuah pulau seorang diri yang mana akhirnya diselamatkan oleh masyarakat sekitar.
Karena kecantikannya itu, dia akhirnya dipersunting seorang raja di tanah Jawa, namun kembali nasib naas dia dapati. Biding Laut dituduh berselingkuh dan harus dihukum mati. Disebabkan cintanya sangat besar, sang raja menyuruh Biding Laut melarikan diri ke Banten melalui laut. Sayangnya, kapal yang ditumpanginya tenggelam oleh gelombang besar.
Inilah cerita-cerita yang beredar soal Kanjeng Ratu Kidul. Dan dari kesemuanya ini hampir semuanya belum bisa dipastikan. Tak mengherankan kenapa demikian karena sosok sang ratu sendiri sering dianggap mitos. Namun demikian, sebagian masyarakat sangat meyakini keberadaan sang ratu walaupun kadang masih dicampuradukkan dengan Nyi Roro Kidul.
