Dikisahkan, pada zaman Nabi Isa AS, banyak kaumnya yang ingkar. Tak hanya itu, hingga ada umatnya sendiri yang menyebar fitnah soal Nabi Isa dan bertekad membunuhnya. Fitnah itu ternyata berhasil mempengaruhi umat lainnya dan setuju untuk membunuh Nabi Isa AS.
Namun, Allah SWT menyelamatkannya dan diambil dari bumi. Rupa pengkhianat itu disamakan rupanya dengan Nabi Isa, hingga dialah yang terbunuh. Allah SWT menyelamatkan Nabi Isa ternyata juga ada alasan lain, yakni untuk menyelamatkan umat Rasulullah saat kiamat tiba.
Berdasarkan hadist dengan sanad yang shahih, dijelaskan bahwa nanti pada hari kiamat atau akhir zaman akan muncul sosok Dajjal yang jahat dan akan dibunuh oleh Nabi Isa Alaihi Salam. Namun, kenapa harus Nabi Isa? Kenapa tidak Rasulullah Sendiri yang membunuh Dajjal tersebut? Rasulullah SAW bersabda.
Jika Dajjal telah keluar dan saya masih hidup maka saya akan membela (menjaga) kalian, namun Dajjal keluar sesudahku (HR. Ahmad; hasan)
Mengapa Nabi Isa yang kemudian ditugaskan membunuh Dajjal?
PERTAMA
Nabi Isa tidaklah dibunuh dan disalib sebagaimana persangkaan orang-orang Yahudi dan Nasrani. Namun, Nabi Isa diangkat oleh Allah Subhanahu wa Taala. Sedangkan orang yang disalib saat itu adalah laki-laki yang diserupakan dengan Nabi Isa.

Dan karena ucapan mereka (orang-orang Yahudi): Sesungguhnya kami telah membunuh Al-Masih, Isa putra Maryam, Rasul Allah. Padahal mereka tidak membunuhnya dan tidak (pula) menyalibnya, tetapi (yang mereka bunuh ialah) orang yang diserupakan dengan Isa bagi mereka (QS. An Nisa : 157)
Diturunkannya Nabi Isa di akhir zaman akan menjadi bukti kebenaran firman Allah dan menjungkirbalikkan keyakinan orang-orang Nasrani.

Selain itu, Nabi Isa juga akan mematahkan salib dan membunuh babi. Salib yang selama ini menjadi simbol kemusyrikan kaum Nasrani dan babi yang selama ini dianggap halal oleh mereka.
Tidak ada nabi (yang hidup) antara masaku dan Isa. Sungguh, kelak ia akan turun, jika kalian melihatnya maka kenalilah. Ia adalah seorang laki-laki yang sedang (tidak tinggi dan tidak terlalu pendek), berkulit merah keputih-putihan, beliau memakai di antara dua kain berwarna sedikit kuning. Seakan rambut kepala beliau menetes meski tidak basah. Beliau akan memerangi manusia hingga mereka masuk ke dalam Islam, beliau akan menghancurkan salib, membunuh babi dan menghapus jizyah (HR. Abu Daud; shahih)
KETIGA
Allah hendak menunjukkan kepada orang-orang yang mengada-adakan agama dan keyakinan trinitas bahwa hanya Islam-lah yang diridhai Allah. Sehingga Allah menurunkan Nabi yang mereka anggap Tuhan untuk memperkuat bahwa hanya Islam-lah agama yang benar, sebagaimana hadits di atas.
KEEMPAT
Turunnya Nabi Isa ke bumi adalah menandakan bahwa ajalnya sudah dekat dan akan dikuburkan di bumi, karena makhluk yang tercipta dari tanah akan kembali ke tanah.
KELIMA
Sebagai bentuk penghormatan bahwa Rasulullah lebih mulia dibanding dirinya. Bahkan Nabi Isa pernah berkata kepada para ummatnya bahwa akan datang seorang Rasul sesudahnya. Dalam al-Quran, perkataan Nabi Isa itu terdapat dalam surat as-Shaff ayat 6,
KETIGA

Beliau ( Nabi Isa) turun ke bumi bukan untuk membawa agama baru atau menyebarkan agama nasrani di jamannya, tapi menyebarkan agama yang diridhoi Allah SWT yang disebarkan oleh Rasulullah, yakni agama islam. Karena islamlah agama terakhir dan tiada Nabi setelah Muhammad SAW.
