KEUPAYAAN lidah memang tidak dijangka. Ia anggota tubuh yang paling baik dan paling buruk selain hati. Lidah hendaklah dikawal daripada berbicara mengenai hal orang lain seperti mengumpat dan membuat fitnah sesama manusia.
Rasulullah s.a.w bersabda pernah bersabda yang bermaksud, "Tidak akan lurus keimanan (istiqomah) seseorang hamba itu sehingga lurus hatinya dan tidak akan lurus hatinya sehingga lurus lidahnya." (Riwayat Ahmad).
Maksud istiqomah ialah tetap teguh di atas jalan yang betul lurus yang membawa keredhaan Allah SWT. Dasar istiqomah adalah istiqomah hati iaitu lurusnya hati di atas tauhid. Apabila hati telah beristiqomah kepada Allah dalam erti kata takut, cinta, tawakkal dan mengagungkan Allah maka seluruh anggota tubuh akan taat kepadanya. Ini ialah kerana hati adalah raja kepada badan manakala anggota badan adalah rakyatnya. Anggota terpenting selepas hati yang mesti diberi perhatian serius agar beristiqomah ialah lidah kerana lidah adalah terjemahan hati yang menggambarkan pemikiran seseorang.
Dalam kitab hadis sahih Muslim pula, dari Abdullah bin 'Amr bin 'Ash r.a. katanya, seorang laki-laki bertanya kepada Rasulullah SAW, "Orang Islam yang bagaimanakah yang paling baik?" Jawab Rasulullah SAW, "Ialah orang-orang yang menjaga orang-orang Islam lainnya dari bencana lidah dan perbuatannya." (Abdullah bin 'Amr bin 'Ash r.a., No Hadis – 33)
Dari Abu Hurairah r.a. katanya Rasulullah SAW bersabda: "Seorang hamba (manusia) yang berbicara dengan pembicaraan yang belum jelas baginya (hakikat dan akibatnya), maka dia akan terlempar ke neraka sejauh antara timur dan barat."
(Abu Hurairah r.a., No Hadis – 2507)
Diriwayatkan daripada Abdullah bin Amr r.a., Rasulullah SAW pernah bersabda yang maksudnya: "Seorang Muslim adalah orang yang tidak merugikan Muslim lainnya dengan lidah, mahupun dengan kedua tangannya. Dan seorang Muhajir (orang yang berhijrah) adalah orang yang meninggalkan semua larangan Allah SWT." (Riwayat al-Bukhari)
Dari hadis-hadis di atas, sebaik-baik orang yang berhijrah ialah hijrahnya dengan hati dan lidah. Insya Allah, dengan berhijrah hati dan lidah, perkataan dan perbuatan kita akan menjadi bersih dari segala maksiat, dosa dan syirik seperti kisah khalifah Umar bin al-Khathab r.a. yang menarik untuk kita renungkan bahawa beliau sebelum memeluk Islam dikenali dengan julukan "penghulu para pelaku kejahatan", namun setelah berhijrah, beliau menjadi pemimpin yang disegani, tawaddhu' dan suka menolong orang miskin, menjadi tonggak bagi berkembangnya agama Islam. Hakikatnya hijrah sangatlah berat, kerana di samping harus memiliki kesabaran, kita juga dituntut memiliki keteguhan aqidah dan keyakinan agar tidak mudah termakan dengan pujuk rayu dan godaan dari kenikmatan dunia yang fana.
Sayidina Umar al-Khattab r.a. pernah berkata: "Barang siapa banyak bicaranya maka banyak kesalahannya. Orang yang banyak salahnya bererti banyak dosanya sehingga nerakalah sebaik-baik tempat bagi mereka."
Daripada Muaz, Rasulullah bersabda: "Mahukah kamu jika aku katakan kepadamu tentang sendi daripada semua kebaikan?"
Jawab Muaz, "Ya, kami nak tahu." Maka Rasulullah s.a.w menunjukkan sendi kebaikan itu pada lidahnya dan berkata, "Jagalah ini."
Muaz berkata, "Wahai Rasulullah, adakah kami akan mendapat seksaan akhirat daripada ucapan kami?"
Rasulullah menjawab, "Betapa azabnya Muaz, orang yang tersungkur di dalam neraka itu melainkan hasil daripada menabur fitnah melalui lidah mereka. Akhirnya mereka menerima seksaan daripada Allah."
Marilah kita menjaga lidah kita masing-masing. Agar lidah kita tidak menyengat diri sendiri, kerana lidah tidak ubah seperti ular berbisa. Banyak orang binasa akibat perbuatan lidah padahal dulu mereka dihormati kawan-kawannya. (Imam al-Syafie)
