Iblis merupakan musuh bagi umat manusia, sepanjang hidupnya Iblis sudah bersumpah kepada Allah bahwa ia akan berusaha untuk menyesatkan anak cucu Adam yang jauh dari jalan Allah agar mereka mau menjadi pengikutnya dan menjadi orang-orang yang tersesat. Untuk itu, marilah kita lebih mendekatkan diri kepada Allah SWT agar kita tidak terhasut oleh tipu daya Iblis.
Tapi, tahukah Anda bahwa jauh sebelum nabi Adam diciptakan, Iblis adalah merupakan makhluk yang mulia disisi Allah dan merupakan salah satu makhluk yang paling di hormati oleh Malaikat. Kasih sayang Allah terbesar kepada Iblis adalah bahwa yang pertama dia telah mendapatkan taufik untuk menyembah Allah SWT. Yang kedua karena ibadahnya yang banyak, dia dimasukkan ke dalam kumpulan para malaikat. Dan sebaik-baik pertolongan Allah kepadanya adalah ia menjadi teman pendamping para malaikat sehingga dapat memahami keindahan, kesucian dan kebersihan mereka.
Sangat mulianya Iblis pada masa itu, dalam sebuah kitab karangan Imam al-Ghazali menyebutkan bahwa Iblis itu sesungguhnya namanya disebut sebagai al-Abid (ahli ibadah) pada langit yang pertama, lalu langit yang kedua disebut az-Zahid, kemudian langit ketiga namanya disebut al-Arif, pada langit keempat namanya adalah al-Wali, pada langit kelima namanya disebut at-Taqi, pada langit keenam namanya disebut al-Kazin, dan pada langit ketujuh namanya disebut Azazil manakala dalam Luh Mahfudz (Lauhul Mahfudz) namanya ialah Iblis.
Dikisahkan Iblis dulunya adalah ahli ibadah yang tidak pernah membangkang dan mengeluh terhadap perintah-perintah Allah. Ia pernah bersujud kepada Allah selama 1000 tahun lamanya dan ia sangat giat dalam beribadah.
Bahkan Iblis pernah menjadi Sayyidul Malaikat (Penghulu atau Pemimpin Malaikat), dan Khozinul Jannah (Bendahara Surga). Namun, lama-kelamaan Iblis menjadi sombong dan angkuh. Ia menganggap bahwa dirinya adalah makhluk yang paling tinggi derajatnya di antara makhluk-makhluk Allah yang lain.
Hingga pada suatu saat ketika Allah baru saja menciptakan Adam sebagai manusia, maka Allah memerintahkan Iblis untuk bersujud kepada Adam, lalu Iblis berkata, “Adakah Engkau mengutamakannya daripada aku, sedangkan aku lebih baik daripadanya. Engkau jadikan aku daripada api dan Engkau jadikan Adam dari pada tanah.”. Kemudian Allah berfirman kepada Iblis, “Aku membuat apa yang Aku kehendaki.”.
Oleh karena iblis memandang dirinya penuh keagungan, maka dia enggan sujud kepada Adam karena ia merasa bangga dan sombong. Dia berdiri tegak hingga malaikat selesai bersujud. Ketika para malaikat mengangkat kepala mereka, mereka mendapati Iblis tidak sujud sedang mereka telah selesai sujud.
Maka para malaikat bersujud kembali untuk kali kedua kerana bersyukur, tetapi Iblis telah dirasuki oleh sifat angkuh dan sombong tetap enggan sujud. Dia berdiri tegak dan berpaling dari para malaikat yang sedang bersujud. Dia tidak ingin mengikuti mereka dan tidak pula dia merasa menyesal atas pembangkangannya terhadap Allah.
Kemudian Allah merubahkan mukanya pada asalnya yang sangat indah cemerlangan ke bentuk hina yang menyerupai babi hutan. Allah membentuk kepalanya seperti kepala unta, dadanya seperti daging yang menonjol di atas punggung, wajah yang ada di antara dada dan kepala itu seperti wajah kera, kedua matanya terbelah pada sepanjang permukaan wajahnya.
Lubang hidungnya terbuka seperti cerek tukang bekam, kedua bibirnya seperti bibir lembu, taringnya keluar seperti taring babi hutan dan janggut terdapat sebanyak tujuh helai.
Setelah itu, lalu Allah mengusirnya dari surga, bahkan dari langit, dari bumi dan ke beberapa jazirah. Dia tidak akan masuk ke bumi melainkan dengan cara sembunyi, Allah melaknatnya hingga hari kiamat kerana dia menjadi kafir.
Meski Iblis pada sebelumnya sangat indah cemerlang rupanya, mempunyai sayap empat, banyak ilmu, banyak ibadah serta menjadi kebanggan para malaikat dan pemukanya, dan dia juga pemimpin para malaikat karubiyin dan banyak lagi, tetapi semua itu tidak menjadi jaminan sama sekali baginya.
Ketika Allah membalas tipu daya iblis, maka menangislah Malaikat Jibril dan Mikail. Lalu Allah S.W.T berfirman kepada para Malaikat, “Apakah yang membuat kamu menangis?”, lalu mereka menjawab, “Ya Allah! Kami tidaklah aman dari tipu dayamu.”. Kemudian Allah kembali berfirman kepada Malaikat, “Begitulah Aku. Jadilah engkau berdua tidak aman dari tipu dayaKu.”.
Setelah di usir dari surga, maka Iblis berkata, “Ya Tuhanku, Engkau telah mengusir aku dari Surga disebabkan Adam, dan aku tidak menguasainya melainkan dengan penguasaan-Mu.” Lalu Allah berfirman pada Iblis, “Engkau dikuasakan atas dia, yakni atas anak cucunya, sebab para nabi adalah maksum.”. Berkata lagi iblis, “Tambahkanlah lagi untukku.” Allah berfirman, “Tidak akan dilahirkan seorang anak baginya kecuali tentu dilahirkan untukmu dua padanya.”.
Berkata iblis lagi, “Tambahkanlah lagi untukku.” Lalu Allah berfirman, “Dada-dada mereka adalah rumahmu, engkau berjalan di sana sejalan dengan peredaran darah.”. Berkata iblis lagi, “Tambahkanlah lagi untukku.”, maka Allah berfirman lagi yang bermaksud, “Dan kerahkanlah terhadap mereka pasukan berkuda dan pasukan yang berjalan kaki, artinya mintalah tolong menghadapi mereka dengan pembantu-pembantumu, baik yang naik kuda maupun yang berjalan kaki. Dan berserikatlah dengan mereka pada harta, yaitu mendorong mereka mengusahakannya dan mengarahkannya ke dalam haram. Dan pada anak-anak, yaitu dengan menganjurkan mereka dalam membuat perantara mendapat anak dengan cara yang dilarang, seperti melakukan senggama dalam masa haid, berbuat perkara-perkara syirik mengenai anak-anak itu dengan memberi nama mereka Abdul Uzza, menyesatkan mereka dengan cara mendorong ke arah agama yang batil, mata pencarian yang tercela dan perbuatan-perbuatan yang jahat dan berjanjilah mereka.”.
Hal ini juga disebutkan dalam surah al-Isra ayat 64 yang artinya:
“Dan hasunglah siapa yang kamu sanggupi di antara mereka dengan ajakanmu, dan kerahkanlah terhadap mereka pasukan berkuda dan pasukanmu yang berjalan kaki dan berserikatlah dengan mereka pada harta dan anak-anak dan beri janjilah mereka. Dan tidak ada yang dijanjikan oleh syaitan kepada mereka melainkan tipuan belaka.” [QS. Al-Isra ayat 64]
Sebelum dilaknat Allah, Iblis pernah melakukan tugas-tugas mulia yang diperintahkan Allah kepadanya yaitu:
1. Iblis sebagai penjaga surga dalam kurun waktu 40.000 tahun.
2. Iblis pernah hidup bersama bergabung dengan Malaikat selama 80.000 tahun.
3. Iblis diangkat menjadi penasehat Malaikat selama 20.000 tahun.
4. Iblis menjadi pemimpin malaikat karobiyyun dalam waktu 30.000 tahun.
5. Iblis melakukan thowaf (mengelilingi) arasy bersama para malaikat dalam waktu 14.000 tahun.
Jadi, keseluruhan Iblis beribadah melakukan semua perintah Allah dalam kurun waktu 185.000 tahun lebih. Selama dalam ibadahnya seperti kita umat Islam, melakukan sholat, puasa, thowaf dengan para malaikat (mengelilingi baitul makmur di Arsy).
Iblis tidak merasa lelah dan mengeluh dalam menjalankan perintah Allah yang mulia ini. Iblis menjalankan dengan ikhlas, tidak ada niat apapun kecuali karena Allah semata.
Pada masa itu malaikat dan lainnya memberi gelar kepada Iblis Al A’ziz (makhluk Allah yang termulia), ada yang memberi gelar A’zazil (panglima besar malaikat).
Menurut kitab tafsir Munir dan Showi, Iblis beribadah pada Allah dalam masa 80.000 tahun, thowaf di baitul Makmur dan Arsy selama 14.000 tahun. Oleh karenanya dilangit pertama sampai ketujuh Iblis begitu dihormati oleh para Malaikat.
Malaikat di penjuru alam semesta, dari bumi, langit, baitul makmur, arsy, dan sebagainya, mereka semua menghormati pada Iblis sebagai makhluk Allah yang terhormat dan termulia, sehingga bila Iblis lewat di depan para malaikat, maka malaikat menghormati pada Iblis, bagaikan penghormatan prajurit kepada komandannya, pengawal istana pada rajanya, sehingga terhormatlah nama Iblis di penjuru alam semesta.
Namun sayang, di lauhul mahfudz, tulisan Iblis terselubung rapi tidak satupun makhluk yang tahu kecuali Allah, tertera Al-kafir Al-mal’un (Iblis inkar terkutuk). Dalam sumber lain, Iblis pada mulanya bernama Azazil dan tinggal di bumi. Azazil adalah jin yang taat kepada Allah dan memang Iblis sebenarnya adalah dari golongan Jin seperti pada firman Allah,
“Dan ingatlah ketika kami berfirman kepada para malaikat ‘Sujudlah kepada Adam,’ maka sujudlah mereka kecuali Iblis. Dia adalah dari golongan Jin, maka ia mendurhakai Tuhannya” [QS. Al-Kahfi ayat 50]
Dia menyembah Allah selama 1000 tahun, lalu Allah swt mengangkatnya ke langit pertama. Di langit pertama, Azazil beribadah menyembah Allah selama 1000 tahun. Kemudian dia diangkat ke langit kedua, begitu seterusnya hingga akhirnya dia diangkat menjadi imam para malaikat.
Apa pun perintah Allah kepada malaikat juga adalah perintah baginya, karena dialah imam para malaikat yang memimpin malaikat. Azazil adalah imam dari seluruh malaikat (Al-muqorrobun, imamul jami’il malaikat).
Ada riwayat yang menyatakan Azazil beribadah kepada Allah selama 80.000 tahun dan tiada tempat di dunia ini yang tidak dijadikan tempat sujudnya ke hadirat Allah SWT.
Dalam satu riwayat menceritakan, malaikat Israfil melihat yang tersurat di Luh Mahfuz ada tercatat satu suratan yang berbunyi: “Adanya satu hamba Allah yang beribadah selama 80.000 tahun tetapi hanya kerana satu kesalahan, maka ibadah hamba itu tidak diterima Allah dan hamba itu terlaknat sehingga hari Kiamat.”.
Maka menangislah Israfil karena bimbang makhluk yang tersurat di Loh Mahfuz itu adalah dirinya. Maka diceritakanlah Israfil kepada segala malaikat pengalamannya melihat apa yang tersurat di Loh Mahfuz.
Maka menangislah sekelian para malaikat karena takut dan bimbang dengan nasib mereka. Lalu semua malaikat datang menemui Azazil yang menjadi imam para malaikat, agar Azazil mendoakan keselamatan dunia dan akhirat kepada seluruh malaikat.
Azazil pun mendoakan keselamatan di dunia dan akhirat kepada seluruh malaikat dengan doa: “Ya Allah, janganlah Engkau murka terhadap mereka (para malaikat).” Namun, Azazil lupa untuk mendoakan keselamatan untuk dirinya. Setelah mendoakan semua para malaikat, Azazil terus menuju ke surga. Di atas pintu surga, Azazil terlihat suratan yang menyatakan: “Ada satu hamba dari kalangan hamba-hamba Allah yang muqarrabin yang telah diperintahkan Allah untuk membuat satu tugasan, tapi hamba tersebut mengengkari perintah Allah. Lalu dia tergolong dalam golongan yang sesat dan terlaknat.”.
Lalu Allah Menciptakan Adam as, dan memerintahkan malaikat untuk sujud menghormat kepada Adam. Azazil, sebagai imam para malaikat, sepatutnya lebih dahulu bersujud memimpin para malaikat. Tetapi, dia menolak, karena dia merasa bahawa dirinya lebih baik dari pada Adam. Sementara para malaikat lain terus sujud tanpa dipimpin oleh Azazil.
Bukan saja enggan sujud, Azazil malah sombong dan menjawab kepada Allah: “Dan (ingatlah), tatkala Kami berfirman kepada para malaikat: ‘Sujudlah kamu semua kepada Adam’, lalu mereka sujud kecuali iblis. Dia berkata: ‘Apakah aku akan sujud kepada orang yang Engkau ciptakan dari tanah?'” [QS. Al-Isra ayat 61]
Kesombongan Iblis ini berpuncak pada iri hati dan kedengkian Iblis terhadap Adam. Ia tidak terima karena Allah akan menciptakan Adam sebagai khalifah di bumi. Karena ia merasa lebih mulia dari Adam yang diciptakan dari tanah, sedangkan ia lebih mulia karena diciptakan dari api.
Ia durhaka kepada Allah, takabur dan lupa akan dirinya dimata Allah. Tak seharusnya ia membangkang perintah Tuhannya. Maka setelah itu, Iblis akhirnya diusir dari surga. Namanya dirubah menjadi Iblis dan dia bersumpah akan menyesatkan manusia dibumi.
“Dia (iblis) berkata: “Terangkanlah kepadaku inikah orangnya yang Engkau muliakan atas diriku? Sesungguhnya jika Engkau memberi tangguh kepadaku sampai hari kiamat, niscaya benar-benar akan aku sesatkan keturunannya, kecuali sebahagian kecil”. [QS. Al-Isra ayat 62]
Kemudian Allah berfirman, “Tuhan berfirman: “Pergilah, barangsiapa di antara mereka yang mengikuti kamu, maka sesungguhnya neraka Jahannam adalah balasanmu semua, sebagai suatu pembalasan yang cukup.” [QS. Al-Isra ayat 63]
Dari kisah ini kita bisa mendapatkan pelajaran bahwa Iblis yang dulunya adalah ahli Ibadah dan makhluk Allah yang mulia sekalipun bisa menjadi makhluk yang dilaknat oleh Allah karena kesalahannya. Untuk itu, sebaiknya kita menjauhi sifat-sifat Iblis seperti sombong, angkuh iri dengki dan yang lainnya agar kita terhindar dari laknat Allah.
