Bagaimana dengan musafir di zaman sekarang dengan kemudahan fasilitas transportasi. Terkadang mereka tidak mengalami kesusahan. Maka jawabannya, yang terbaik adalah tetap berpuasa.
Salah satu keringanan bagi musafir adalah boleh berbuka ketika bulan Ramadhan. Sebagaimana kita tahu bahwa safar di zaman dahulu memberatkan, tidak ada tempat makan dan minum serta tidak ada tempat penginapan. Keadaan yang memberatkan inilah yang membuat musafir mendapatkan keringanan.
Sebagaimana sabda Nabi shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam,
السَّفَرُ قِطْعَةٌ مِنَ الْعَذَابِ ، يَمْنَعُ أَحَدَكُمْ طَعَامَهُ وَشَرَابَهُ وَنَوْمَهُ ، فَإِذَا قَضَى نَهْمَتَهُ فَلْيُعَجِّلْ إِلَى أَهْلِهِ
“Safar merupakan sebagian dari siksaan, karena menghalangi seseorang di antara kalian untuk bisa menikmati makan, minum, dan tidur. Jika di antara kalian telah menyelesaikan keperluannya, maka hendaklah dia segera kembali ke keluarganya” (HR. Bukhari no. 1804 dan Muslim no. 1927).
Bagaimana dengan musafir di zaman sekarang dengan kemudahan fasilitas transportasi. Terkadang mereka tidak mengalami kesusahan. Maka jawabannya, yang terbaik adalah tetap berpuasa.
Syaikh Muhammad bin Shalih Al-Utsaimin ditanya mengenai hal ini, “Bagaimanakah hukumnya puasa seorang musafir, melihat realita bahwa sekarang ini puasa tidak memberatkan terhadap orang yang menjalankannya karena sempurnanya sarana perhubungan dewasa ini”?
beliau menjawab,
Seorang musafir boleh tetap berpuasa dan boleh berbuka, berdasarkan firman Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala.
وَمَن كَانَ مَرِيضًا أَوْ عَلَى سَفَرٍ فَعِدَّةٌ مِّنْ أَيَّامٍ أُخَرَ يُرِيدُ اللهُ بِكُمُ الْيُسْرَ وَلاَ يُرِيدُ بِكُمُ الْعُسْرَ وَلِتُكْمِلُواْ الْعِدَّةَ وَلِتُكَبِّرُواْ اللهَ عَلَى مَا هَدَاكُمْ وَلَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ
“dan barang siapa sakit atau dalam perjalanan (lalu ia berbuka), maka (wajiblah baginya berpuasa), sebanyak hari yang ditinggalkannya itu, pada hari-hari yang lain. Allah menghendaki kemudahan bagimu, dan tidak menghendaki kesukaran bagimu. Dan hendaklah kamu mencukupkan bilangannya dan hendaklah kamu mengagungkan Allah atas petunjuk-Nya yang diberikan kepadamu, supaya kamu bersyukur” (QS. Al-Baqarah : 185)
Para sahabat rdhiaallahu ‘anhum bepergian bersama Nabi shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam, sebagian mereka ada yang berpuasa, sebagian yang lain berbuka, orang yang berbuka tidak mencela orang yang berpuasa, sebaliknya orang yang berpuasa tidak mencela orang yang berbuka, sedangkan Nabi shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam berpuasa di waktu bepergian, Abu Darda radhiallahu ‘anhu berkata,
سافرنا مع النبي صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ في حر شديد وما منا صائم إلا رسول الله صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وعبد الله بن رواحة
“Kami bepergian bersama Nabi shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam dalam keadaan yang sangat panas, tiada seorangpun diantara kami yang berpuasa kecuali rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam dan Abdullah bin Rawahah”
Kaidah hukum bagi musafir adalah dia disuruh memilih antara puasa dan berbuka, akan tetapi jika berpuasa tidak memberatkannya maka puasa lebih utama, karena di dalamnya terdapat tiga manfaat:
- Meneladani Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam.
- Kemudahan, kemudahan puasa atas manusia; karena seorang manusia apabila dia berpuasa bersama orang banyak maka akan terasa ringan dan mudah.
- Manfaatnya segera membebaskan diri dari beban tanggung jawabnya.
Apabila terasa berat atasnya maka sebaiknya dia tidak berpuasa, kaidah ‘Tidaklah termasuk kebaikan berpuasa di waktu bepergian’ tepat diterapkan pada keadaan seperti ini. Karena Nabi shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam pernah melihat seseorang pingsan, orang-orang di sekitar beliau berdesak-desakan, beliau bertanya. “Kenapa orang ini?”. Mereka menjawab. “Dia berpuasa”. Lalu beliau bersabda,
ليس من البر الصيام في السفر
“Puasa di waktu bepergian bukanlah termasuk kebaikan”.
Maka kaidah umum ini berlaku atas orang yang kondisinya seperti kondisi lelaki ini yang meraskan berat untuk berpuasa.
Karenanya kami berkata, “Bepergian di masa sekarang ini mudah –seperti yang dikatakan oleh penanya- tidak berat untuk berpuasa, pada umumnya, apabila puasa tidak berat dijalankan maka yang paling utama adalah berpuasa”.

Dalam kesempatan yang lain beliau juga ditanya, “Apakah puasa atau berbuka yang lebih baik bagi musafir?”.
Beliau menjawab:
Yang lebih baik apa yang paling mudah baginya, jika lebih berpuasa baginya maka berpuasa lebih baik. Jika lebih mudah baginya berbuka maka berbuka lebih baik. Jika keduanya sama, maka berpuasa lebih baik. Karena inilah perbuatan Nabi shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam, karena lebih cepat membebaskan diri dari beban syariat. Ini yang lebih ringan bagi manusia karena qhada puasa bisa jadi terasa berat. Bisa jadi kami merajihkannya (pendapat ini) juga. Karena (berpuasa) pada bulan yang bertepatan dengan bulan puasa (orang-orang berpuasa).
Sehingga ada 3 keadaan:
- berbuka lebih mudah, maka hendaknya ia berbuka
- puasa lebih mudah, maka hendaknya ia berpuasa
- keadaannya sama, maka lebih baik ia berpuasa.
