Di beberapa negara masih menggunakan adat istiadat lama yang menjunjung tinggi kedudukan seorang laki-laki dalam keluarga. Tapi pada kenyataannya konsep ini sudah tidak dapat diterapkan di beberapa negara maju.
Kisah ini menceritakan pengalaman seorang wanita bernama Lisa yang baru berusia 25 tahun. Setelah menikah dia melahirkan seorang putri cantik di bulan Oktober lalu.
Saat bayinya lahir dan dia diberi makanan penambah stamina di rumah sakit, ibu mertua dan suaminya kurang senang, terutama ibu mertuanya, yang bergumam, “Adalah hal yang wajar untuk melahirkan, bukan masalah besar. Karena itu, tidak perlu tinggal di rumah sakit, besok juga sudah bisa pulang.”
Mendengar kata-kata ibu mertuanya yang tidak berperasaan, Lisa sangat sedih, dia berharap bisa ditemani oleh ibu kandungnya, karena dengan begitu semuanya akan lebih baik bagi dirinya maupun bayinya.
Keesokan harinya, ibu mertuanya menyuruh anaknya pulang dari rumah sakit. Dia juga mengatakan kepada Lisa: “Di rumah lebih nyaman daripada rumah sakit.”
Ketika suaminya meminta supaya istrinya keluar dari rumah sakit, dokter memintanya untuk tinggal selama beberapa hari, untuk menjaga situasi serta memantau kondisi ibu dan bayinya, jadi akan lebih baik bagi ibu dan bayi yang baru lahir itu.
Namun, ibu mertua dan suaminya tidak setuju, menuntut supaya Lisa secepatnya keluar dari rumah sakit.
“Bayi yang baru lahir, di rumah juga bisa dirawat, setiap satu hari di rumah sakit sama saja membuang uang ekstra untuk biaya kamar, seperti kami sudah tidak punya rumah untuk ditinggali si bayi saja,” kata ibu mertuanya.

Keluarganya juga tidak mau menyewa pembantu, menganggap bahwa pekerjaan rumah itu mudah dan bisa dilakukan oleh siapa saja yang ada di rumah, menyewa pembantu sama dengan membuang uang karena malas.
