Legenda tinju dunia, Muhammad Ali merupakan seorang pria keturunan Afrika Amerika yang masuk Islam setelah menjadi terkenal.
Setelah menjadi mualaf, dia kemudian menjadi ikon bagi Muslim Amerika. Namun tidak banyak yang tahu alasan sebenarnya Ali memutuskan untuk mengucapkan kalimat Syahadat.
Seperti yang dilansir NDTV pada 27 Oktober 2017, alasan sesungguhnya Ali masuk Islam adalah ketika tengah bertengkar di rumah bersama istrinya, Belinda.
Ali berada di luar kendali saat itu. Belinda kemudian menginstruksikan Ali untuk duduk dan menulis sebuah esai. Dia memintanya untuk menulis tentang mengapa dia menjadi seorang Muslim. Ali lalu mengambil selembar kertas kosong dan pulpen biru dan mulai menulis.
Belinda sekarang memakai nama Khalilah Camacho-Ali kemudian pada Rabu, 25 Oktober 2017 membawa esai itu ke Museum Nasional Sejarah dan Budaya Afrika Amerika untuk melihat apakah kurator akan memasukkannya ke dalam koleksi museum itu.
Menurut Belinda, pengalaman yang dikisahkan Ali mengingatkan semua orang bahwa bahkan perjalanan spiritual paling kuat pun bisa memiliki permulaan yang sederhana.
Dalam suratnya, Ali menulis tentang masa remajanya di Louisville saat dia dikenal sebagai Cassius Clay Jr. Suatu ketika Ali melihat seorang pria mengenakan jas mohair hitam, menjual koran terbitan Nation of Islam saat ia berjalan-jalan mencari gadis-gadis cantik.
Sebelumnya Ali pernah mendengar tentang organisasi Islam Amerika itu dan pemimpinnya, Elijah Muhammad.
Namun dia tidak pernah berpikir serius untuk bergabung dengan kelompok tersebut, yang menggunakan beberapa ajaran Islam untuk memperjuangkan hak kulit hitam dan perbaikan diri.
Ali mengambil koran dan tertarik dengan sebuah kartun. Kartun itu menunjukkan seorang pemilik budak kulit putih memukul budak kulit hitamnya dan meminta orang tersebut berdoa kepada Yesus.
Pesan yang ditangkapnya saat itu adalah Kristen adalah agama yang dipaksakan pada budak oleh orang kulit putih. “Saya menyukai kartun itu yang memberikan sesuatu untuk saya, dan itu masuk akal,” ujarnya.
Ali mengaku masuk Islam bukan secara spiritual, tapi pragmatisme. Kartun tersebut membangunkannya, dan dia menyadari bahwa dia tidak memilih agama Kristen.
Dia tidak memilih nama Cassius Clay. Jadi mengapa dia harus menyimpan sisa-sisa perbudakan itu? Dan jika dia tidak harus menjaga agamanya atau namanya, apa lagi yang bisa dia ubah?
Pada tahun 1964, ketika dia memenangkan kejuaraan kelas berat, dia mengumumkan secara terbuka dan membuat pernyataan independen: “Saya percaya kepada Allah dan dengan damai,” katanya.
“Saya bukan lagi orang Kristen. Saya tahu ke mana saya pergi dan saya tahu yang sebenarnya. Saya tidak harus menjadi apa yang Anda inginkan. Saya bebas menjadi apa yang saya inginkan. ”
Pada tahun-tahun berikutnya, Ali terus mengeksplorasi pandangan agamanya. Dia tidak selalu memiliki filosofi yang jelas. Dia tidak selalu sesuai dengan asas yang dia dukung. Tapi dia tidak pernah berhenti mengajukan pertanyaan.
Ketika Elijah Muhammad meninggal dan Nation of Islam mereformasi diri, Ali memeluk Islam ortodoks. Dia belajar Alquran dan kadang-kadang mengundang pakar agama bergabung dengannya untuk diskusi panjang agama.
Muhammad Ali mengakui bahwa perjalanan religiusnya dimulai saat mencoba mencari gadis-gadis cantik dan kartun di koran. Setelah itu, Ali tidak hanya tokoh olahraga tinju, tapi juga merupakan seorang tokoh dalam dunia Islam yang disegani banyak orang.
