قَالَ (ابن عمر رضي الله عنه): كَانَ نَاسٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صلىالله عليه وسلم، فِيهمْ سَعْدٌ، فَذَهَبُوا يَأْكُلُونَ مِنْ لَحْمٍ،فَنَادَتْهُمُ امْرَأَةٌ مِنْ بَعْضِ أَزْوَاجِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم،إِنَّهُ لَحْمُ ضَبٍّ، فَأَمْسَكُوا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم:كُلُوا أَوِ اطْعَمُوا، فَإِنَّهُ حَلاَلٌ أَوْ قَالَ: لاَ بَأْسَ بِهِ وَلكِنَّهُلَيْسَ مِنْ طَعَامِي.
Abdullah Bin Umar Radhiyallahu ‘anhuma berkata: “Orang-orang dari kalangan sahabat Nabi Shallallahu’alaihi wasallam yang di antara mereka terdapat Sa’ad makan daging. Kemudian salah seorang isteri Nabi Shallallahu’alaihi wasallam memanggil mereka seraya berkata, ‘Itu daging Biawak’. Mereka pun berhenti makan. Maka Rasulullah Shallallahu’alaihi wasallam bersabda: “Makanlah, karena karena daging itu halal atau beliau bersabda: “tidak mengapa dimakan, akan tetapi daging hewan itu bukanlah makananku“.
Hadits diatas merupakan salah satu hadits yang menerangkan tentang kehalalan hewan dhab sehingga tidak ada keraguan lagi pada diri kita akan kehalalannya. Namun, yang menjadi masalah adalah banyak sebagian dari kita yang menterjemahkan dhab dengan biawak sehingga konsekwensinya mereka menghalalkan pula memakan biawak. (pengalaman pribadi: ketika kami memberikan ta’lim ada beberapa ikhwah dibeberapa majelis yang menanyakan tentang hal tersebut).
Karena kami merasa hal ini belum banyak diketahui oleh kaum muslimin, maka ingin rasanya untuk ikut berpartisipasi dalam menjelaskan perkara ini walau dengan ringkas.
Perbedaan Dhab dan Biawak
Untuk membedakan antara kedua hewan tersebut rasanya saya hanya perlu menjelaskan ciri-ciri atau karakteristik hewan dhab saja dikarenakan insya Allah mayoritas dari kita sudah mengenal siapa itu biawak. Berikut karakteristik hewan dhab menurut para ulama:
1. Bentuk tubuhnya
Bentuk tubuh dhab hampir mirip dengan biawak, bunglon dan tokek.
Ukuran tubuhnya lebih kecil dari biawak.
Dhab itu berekor kasar (mirip duri duren kalau menurut saya), kesat dan bersisik. Ekornyapun tidak terlalu panjang berbeda dengan biawak.
Dhab jantan memiliki dua dzakar dan dhab betina memiliki dua vagina.
2. Warnanya
warna tubuhnya mirip dengan warna tanah, berdebu kehitam-hitaman (غُبْرَة مُشْرَبةٌ سَواداً), apabila telah gemuk maka dadanya menjadi berwarna kuning.
3. Makanannya

Dhab tidak memangsa dan memakan hewan lain(selain belalang), bahkan Ibnu Mandzur mengatakan bahwa dhab tidak mau memakan kutu.
4. Tempat Hidupnya
Dhab hanya tinggal digurun pasir. Mereka tidak bisa tinggal dirawa-rawa seperti halnya biawak.
5. Sifatnya
Sebagaimana dijelaskan diatas bahwa dhobb tidak memangsa hewan lain kecuali hanya jenis-jenis belalang, maka kami katakan dhab bukanlah hewan buas dan tidak pula membahayakan, berbeda sekali dengan biawak yang sudah kita kenal.
Dhab tidak suka dengan air, berbeda sekali dengan biawak yang jago berenang dan menyelam dalam mencari mangsa sehingga terkenal menjadi musuh para petani ikan.
Dikatakan pula bahwa dhab tidak meminum air secara langsung. Dhab hanya meminum embun dan air yang terdapat di udara yang dingin. Apabila Orang Arab menggambarkan keengganannya dalam melakukan seseuatu maka mereka berkata: “لا افعل كذا حتى يرد الضب الماء”/ Aku tidak akan melakukannya sampai dhab mendatangi air.
Dhab tidak pernah keluar dari lubangnya selama musim dingin.
Dikatakan pula bahwasannya umur dhab bisa mencapai 700 tahun.
6. Hubungannya dengan biawak
Dhab merupakan salah satu hewan yang kerap menjadi mangsa kedzaliman biawak.
7. Bangsa Arab memandang dhab
Orang arab suka memburu dhab dan menyantapnya sebagai makanan namun mereka merasa jijik terhadap biawak dan menggolongkannya ke dalam hewan yang menjijikan.
Dari beberapa ciri hewan dhab sebagaimana yang kami sebutkan diatas, memang ada kemiripan bentuk tubuh antara dhab dengan biawak, namun pada banyak hal terdapat banyak sekali perbedaan antara kedua hewan tersebut, yang paling menonjol adalah pada makanannya, dimana dhab merupakan hewan yang jinak(tidak buas) memakan makanan yang bersih dan tidak menjijikan berbeda sekali dengan biawak yang merupakan hewan buas dan pemangsa serta memakan makanan yang menjijikkan. Diantara makanan biawak adalah bangkai, ular, musang, kelelawar, kala jengking, kodok, kadal, tikus, dan hewan kotor lainnya.
Selain merupakan hewan yang menjijikkan, biawak juga merupakan hewan yang licik dan zhalim. Abdul Lathif Al-Baghdadi menyebutkan bahwa diantara kelicikkan dan kedzaliman biawak adalah bahwa biawak suka merampas lubang ular untuk ditempatinya dan tentunya sebelumnya dia membunuh dan memakan ular tersebut, selain itu biawak juga suka merebut lubang dhab, padahal kuku biawak lebih panjang dan lebih mudah untuk digunakan membuat lubang. Karena kedzalimannya, orang-orang Arab sering mengungkapkan: “Dia itu lebih zhalim daripada biawak”.
Kesimpulan
Dhab merupakan hewan yang halal untuk dimakan.
Dhab berbeda dengan biawak. Sebenarnya kalau kita mau membuka kamus kita akan dapati bahwa biawak dalam bahasa arab disebut warol (الوَرَلُ), bukan dhab(الضَّبّ).
Biawak haram dimakan dikarenakan:
Biawak merupakan hewan yang menjijikkan (khabits)
Biawak merupakan hewan buas
Para ulama mutaqaddimin telah mengharamkan biawak. Para ulama mutaakhirin dari kalangan Syafi’iyah dan Hanabilah telah menegaskan tentang kejelasan haramnya biawak.(muslim.or.id)
