Berislam 38 tahun lalu, Thomson meyakini cara terbaik mengamalkan ajaran Islam adalah memahami dan meneladani sumbernya, yakni Alquran dan Sunah Rasulullah SAW.
“Seperti pepatah yang mengatakan bahwa semakin dekat kita pada sumber mata air, semakin murni air yang kita minum,” ujar pria kelahiran Afrika ini.
Dilahirkan di Rhodesia Utara (sekarang Zambia), Thomson menempuh pendidikan dasar serta menengahnya di Rhodesia Selatan (sekarang Zimbabwe). Masa awal hidupnya, ia lalui di daerah-daerah terpencil Afrika yang kala itu belum tersentuh peradaban modern, seperti listrik, gas, dan saluran air bersih.
Lahir dan besar di Afrika, Thomson muda merasa tidak puas pada ajaran Kristen. Ia mulai mempertanyakan banyak hal seperti, “Jika setiap manusia itu sama di hadapan Tuhan, lalu mengapa kaum Afrika kulit putih seperti dia harus beribadah di gereja yang berbeda dengan kaum kulit hitam?”
Pertanyaan lain yang kerap mengganggunya sebagai pemeluk Kristen adalah soal ketuhanan Yesus.
“Jika Yesus adalah Tuhan, kepada siapa dahulu ia berdoa? Jika Yesus adalah Tuhan dan disalib, lalu siapa yang menghidupi surga dan dunia? Pertanyaan itu tak pernah terjawab selama aku memeluk ajaran Kristen,” ujar lulusan Exeter University, Inggris, ini.
Ketika berusia 12 tahun, Thomson sampai pada satu titik di mana ia memercayai Tuhan dan Yesus. “Hanya saja, aku tidak yakin pada gereja.” Terhenti pada berbagai pertanyaan itu, Thomson mulai membaca apa pun dan memikirkan kehidupan yang dijalaninya sejauh itu. Ia mengunjungi berbagai kelompok spiritual dan mencoba meditasi selama beberapa bulan.
“Itu menenangkan, tapi sama sekali tak mengubah gaya hidupku.”
Hingga akhirnya, Thomson bertemu Syekh Abdalqadir as-Sufi (tokoh tarbiyah, penggagas Gerakan Dunia “Murabitun”). Pertemuan itu menjadi awal perkenalannya dengan Islam, agama yang tak pernah terpikirkan oleh Thomson sebelumnya.
Saat berbicara dengan Syekh Abdalqadir dan mendengarkan berbagai hal yang disampaikannya, Thomson merasa telah menemukan jalan menuju transformasi yang ia butuhkan.
“Sejak itu, perlahan aku menemukan jawaban atas semua pertanyaan yang memenuhi otakku,” katanya.
Thomson pun rutin mengunjungi pusat kajian Islam Syekh Abdalqadir. Ia juga membaca The Book of Stranger yang ditulis Sang Syekh.
Thomson mantap mengakhiri pencariannya pada 13 Agustus 1973. Ia pun mengikrarkan syahadat dan berhaji empat tahun kemudian. Dan mengubah namanya menjadi Ahmad Thomson.
Sepulang haji, ia menyelesaikan pelatihannya sebagai pengacara. Lalu, pada 26 Juli 1979, ia dipanggil ke Pengadilan England & Wales dan mulai meniti karier di bidang advokasi dan hukum Islam.
Thomson pertama kali memperoleh perhatian publik pada 2001, saat tampil dalam sebuah film dokumenter berjudul My Name is Ahmed yang menyabet sebuah penghargaan. Ia pun tampil di film dokumenter lainnya, Prince Naseem’s Guide to Islam. Kedua film itu ditayangkan di BBC2 pada Agustus 2001. Setelah itu, wajahnya kerap mewarnai layar kaca dalam berbagai program, terutama program-program Islam.
Kini, hari-harinya diisi dengan aneka kegiatan keislaman, mulai dari memberikan ceramah rutin tentang Islam di berbagai wilayah di Inggris, menulis untuk Jurnal al-Kala, sampai menjadi kontributor tetap dalam konferensi lintas agama yang digelar setiap tahun di Masjid Regents Park dan Pusat Kebudayaan.
Beberapa buku karyanya yang cukup menggemparkan dan sangat sulit dicari terjemahannya , buku yang membongkar apa dan bagaimana konspirasi Yahudi di dunia ini yang berjudul , yaitu Dajjal the Anti Christ.
“Itu menenangkan, tapi sama sekali tak mengubah gaya hidupku.”
Hingga akhirnya, Thomson bertemu Syekh Abdalqadir as-Sufi (tokoh tarbiyah, penggagas Gerakan Dunia “Murabitun”). Pertemuan itu menjadi awal perkenalannya dengan Islam, agama yang tak pernah terpikirkan oleh Thomson sebelumnya.
Saat berbicara dengan Syekh Abdalqadir dan mendengarkan berbagai hal yang disampaikannya, Thomson merasa telah menemukan jalan menuju transformasi yang ia butuhkan.
“Sejak itu, perlahan aku menemukan jawaban atas semua pertanyaan yang memenuhi otakku,” katanya.
Thomson pun rutin mengunjungi pusat kajian Islam Syekh Abdalqadir. Ia juga membaca The Book of Stranger yang ditulis Sang Syekh.
Thomson mantap mengakhiri pencariannya pada 13 Agustus 1973. Ia pun mengikrarkan syahadat dan berhaji empat tahun kemudian. Dan mengubah namanya menjadi Ahmad Thomson.
Sepulang haji, ia menyelesaikan pelatihannya sebagai pengacara. Lalu, pada 26 Juli 1979, ia dipanggil ke Pengadilan England & Wales dan mulai meniti karier di bidang advokasi dan hukum Islam.
