Dia berusia 23 Tahun. Bernama Peter Casey, atau Abdulmalik. Pada usia 15 tahun, lulusan Queens College ini memutuskan bersyahadat masuk Islam.

Namanya dikenal secara luas baik di negerinya, Amerika Serikat, maupun dunia internasional setelah pengakuannya memilih Islam tersebar luas di jagat maya. Alih-alih takut akan keselamatan nyawanya mengingat fobia Islam kembali mengental di AS menjelang peringatan tragedi 11 September, ia malah rajin menunjukkan keyakinan barunya di depan publik.  (Tidak semua muslim mampu lakukan hal itu di negeri non muslim  walau oleh ‘yang sudah Muslim’ sejak lahir)

Ia misalnya, selalu pergi ke masjid setiap hari dengan ‘menumpang’ skateboard-nya — gaya khas anak muda AS. Ia juga jarang berpikir dua kali untuk melakukan ibadah shalat di Starbuck, jika kebetulan ia tengah nongkrong di sana dan waktu shalat telah tiba.

Pria bermata biru ini mengaku pantang menyembunyikan identitas keislamannya. Sebaliknya, ia mengatakan ia berusaha untuk “menantang stereotip dan kesalahpahaman” orang lain di sekitarnya tentang Islam.

Sebagai seorang mualaf yang dibesarkan di pinggiran kota dengan latar belakang Yudeo-Kristen, Casey dibesarkan di pinggiran Long Island oleh ibu yang beragama Yahudi dan ayah Katolik. Ia tumbuh dalam keluarga yang bertolak belakang dalam melihat Yesus.

Di satu sisi, kekristenan berbicara tentang Yesus (Tuhan) sebagai Allah Putra, Allah Bapa, dan roh Kudus (3 Pribadi tapi Satu/trinitas). Di sisi lain, Yudaisme (Agama Yahudi) berbicara tentang Yesus sebagai seorang mesias/seorang yang diurapi/juru selamat palsu.

“Saya merasa ada dua hal ekstrem di sana, dan saya mempelajari keduanya,” kata  Casey.

Pasca-serangan 11 September 2001, pemahaman mulai berubah. Ia berusia 13 tahun saat dua menara kembar WTC itu runtuh. Sejak itu!, ia rajin berselancar di dunia maya mengorek isi ajaran Islam — yang “Pada awalnya” dituduhkan berada di balik serangan itu. Ia menemukan dalam penelusurannya doktrin yang lebih masuk akal dalam Islam tentang Yesus: Dia Seorang Nabi, Seorang Pria yang menyampaikan firman Allah. Tidak lebih dari itu.

“Aku sedang mencari agama Yesus dan murid-muridnya,” kata Casey mengatakan. “Dan ketika saya mulai belajar tentang Islam, saya seperti:” Ini dia. Ini adalah agama itu.” . (The New York Times,12/9/2011)

Dua tahun kemudian, pada usia 15 tahun, ia masuk Islam.

Sejak itu, Ia telah berupaya untuk meluruskan kecurigaan publik AS pada Islam. Tak hanya melalui perbuatan – seperti bershalat di tempat umum dan ramah pada siapa saja — ia juga aktif berdakwah melalui blog-nya yang bertajuk ‘Dawah Addict’. Tema-tema seperti ‘Muhammad dalam Alkitab’ dan ‘Bagaimana Menjadi Seorang Muslim’ diulasnya tanpa canggung.

“Ketika saya pertama kali menjadi Muslim, dan ini masih terdengar hingga hari ini, orang-orang berkata,”Mengapa tidak ada Muslim di luar sana mengatakan tentang Islam yang sebenar-benarnya?” Kata Mr Casey. “Dan saya pikir, yah, Saya akan Melakukannya jika tidak ada orang lain yang akan melakukannya.”

Ia bahkan mempunyai saluran/channel You Tube sendiri yang ia pergunakan untuk Dakwah dan menyampaikan islam dengan jumlah pendengar yang terus tumbuh dengan 5000 pelanggan dan hampir setengah juta pengunjung.(eramuslim)
