Baru-baru ini, tim ilmuwan telah menemukan perisai bumi tak terlihat sekitar 7200 mil diatas permukaan Bumi yang berfungsi melindungi dari serangan partikel elektron. Serangan partikel elektron yang menghantam berada disekitar planet dengan kecepatan mendekati cahaya, dan telah mengancam astronot dan satelit selama terjadinya badai matahari.

Saat ini, para ilmuwan menemukan bukti terbaru pada sabuk terluar, diketinggian sekitar 7200 mil. Perisai bumi melindungi dari serangan partikel elektron ultrafast dan bergerak lebih mendalam ke atmosfer bumi. Menurut Prof Baker, hal ini hampir seperti tesis elektron yang bergerak menuju ke dinding kaca ruang angkasa, lebih mirip perisai yang terbuat dari gaya medan magnet sehingga tak terlihat ketika menghalangi partikel elektron tersebut. Tim ilmuwan dari University of Colorado Boulder menjelaskan secara rinci hasil analisis mereka dalam jurnal Nature yang terbit pada edisi 27 November 2014.

Perisai Bumi Halangi Serangan Partikel Elektron

Perisai bumi selama ini telah menjadi penghalang pergerakan partikel elektron di sabuk radiasi Van Allen. Dua cincin berbentuk donat berada diatas bumi dipenuhi elektron dan proton berenergi tinggi, hal ini terlihat ketika sabuk radiasi bumi secara berkala membengkak dan menyusut dalam menanggapi gangguan energi yang berasal dari matahari.

Sabuk radiasi Van Allen ditemukan pada tahun 1958 oleh Profesor James Van Allen dan tim ilmuwan dari University of Iowa, dimana sabuk ini meluas hingga 25000 mil diatas permukaan bumi. Pada tahun 2013, Professor Daniel Baker memimpin sebuah tim yang menggunakan Twin Van Allen Probe, satelit yang diluncurkan NASA pada tahun 2012, mereka berhasil menemukan cincin yang berada diantara sabuk radiasi bagian dalam dan luar.


Ilmuwan yang terlibat pada awalnya mengira partikel elektron bermuatan tinggi secara berulang menghantam sekitar Bumi lebih dari 100,000 mil perdetik. Partikel ini secara perlahan melayang ke bawah dan bagian atas atmosfer, dan secara bertahap menghilang akibat berinteraksi dengan molekul udara, tapi penghalang tak terlihat melalui satelit sama sekali.

Beberapa skenario mungkin saja bisa menciptakan dan mempertahankan perisai bumi seperti itu, ilmuwan berpaya membuka misteri kemungkinan hubungan dengan garis-garis medan magnet bumi. Medan magnet ini umumnya menangkal sekaligus mengendalikan proton dan elektron dengan cara memantulkannya diantara kutub bumi. Mereka juga menduga, apakah sinyal radio yang berasal dari pemancar di Bumi bisa menghambat partikel elektron dan mencegah pergerakannya ke permukaan bumi.

Menurut Prof Baker, alam membenci gradien yang kuat dan umumnya menemukan cara untuk memperlancar pergerakan keluar. Beberapa partikel elektron relativistik bergerak ke dalam dan luar, walaupun tidak jelas pergerakannya lambat atau tidak, tetapi proses bertahap dalam gerakan partikel elektron dapat menciptakan batas tertentu di ruang angkasa.

Selama ini diketahui bahwa awan raksasa dingin atau gas bermuatan listrik yang disebut Plasmasphere, berada disekitar 600 mil diatas permukaan Bumi dan membentang ribuan mil ke luar sabuk Van Allen. Partikel elektron berada dibatas perisai bumi dengan frekuensi rendah, gelombang elektromagnetik menciptakan desis Plasmapheric yang terdengar seperti 'White Noise' ketika terdengar melalui speaker.

Baker mengatakan, bahwa desis Plasmaspheric mungkin memainkan peran pada perisai Bumi, menurutnya masih banyak misteri yang belum terungkap. Untuk menjaga dan mengamati wilayah bisa dilakukan dengan bantuan instrumen saterlit Van Allen. Jika matahari meledakan magnetosfer bumi melalui Coronal Mass Ejection (CME), mungkin akan menghancurkan perisai bumi dalam jangka waktu tertentu.
