Akhirnya beliau ‘mengabdikan diri’ menjaga masjid ini, sambil merawat dan memberi makan kucing2 yang hidup di sekitarnya.

Dua puluh ribu setiap hari beliau habiskan untuk membeli nasi bungkus dan lauk ikan, pagi dan sore, demi mereka. Angka segitu bagi kita mungkin tidak seberapa, namun bagi beliau, yang tidak jarang mengalah untuk tidak makan asalkan kucing2 ini kenyang, mungkin berbeda. Namun toh tidak ada keluhan keluar dari mulutnya. Bahkan pernah suatu ketika dia rela mengeluarkan lima puluh ribu rupiah untuk menebus ‘anak2nya’ yang sudah dikarungin siap buang ke petugas. Dan saya, hanya bisa mendengarkan ceritanya sambil mencoba menahan air mata. Merasa hina.
Pemandangan paling menyejukkan hari ini dipersembahkan oleh Si Mbah penjaga masjid terminal Purabaya (Bungurasih), Sidoarjo ini.

Sambil mencampur nasi yang masih hangat mengepul dengan dua ekor ikan goreng yang dibelinya seharga sepuluh ribu rupiah – dan memarahi saya karena dianggap menghinanya soal nasi yang baru saja dibelinya, menegaskan bahwa nasi itu nyata2 hasil BELI, bukan meminta2- beliau bercerita.

Sudah sejak 10 tahun lalu beliau tinggal di masjid ini. Ketika saya tanya apalah beliau menghidupi diri dengan berjualan atau apa, beliau bilang tidak. Sempat beliau menawarkan diri menjadi pembantu rumah tangga, tapi tidak ada yang sudi karena dianggap terlalu tua dan kurang tenaga.
