Orang tua mana yang tidak menginginkan anaknya tumbuh menjadi anak yang berprestasi.

Bagi orangtuanya, Jennifer Pan adalah “anak emas”. Foto-fotonya yang mengenakan jubah wisuda dari sebuah SMA Katolik, kemudian lulus dari University of Toronto, Kanada yang terkemuka, dengan predikat sarjana farmasi, membuat Bich Ha dan Huei Hann Pan bangga bukan kepalang.

Tak mudah bagi pasangan itu untuk menyekolahkan 2 anak. Keduanya adalah bekas pengungsi asal Vietnam. Di tanah rantau, mereka harus bekerja keras sebagai buruh, demi masa depan buah hatinya.

Mereka sangat menghargai pendidikan. Mereka juga orangtua yang disiplin, cenderung keras, bagi Jennifer dan adiknya, Felix.

Jennifer adalah anak istimewa. Sumber harapan dan menjadi kebanggaan orang tua
Saat masih kecil, anak sulung itu sudah jadi kebanggaan. Gadis itu mengikuti les piano dan skating, serta bisa menguasai keduanya. Ia bahkan berharap bisa tampil di olimpiade, namun cedera ligamen mengakhiri mimpinya.

Jennifer juga berlatih bela diri dan perenang yang baik. Dan di luar kegiatan ekstrakulikuler, ia adalah pelajar teladan yang tekun belajar hingga larut malam. Pesta dan pacaran menjadi hal terlarang di rumahnya. Pendidikan adalah segalanya.

Namun, di balik semua hal mengesankan itu, tersembunyi kebohongan, kebencian, dan dendam yang kemudian menjurus pada tindakan mengerikan yang menghancurkan keluarga dan diri Jennifer: pembunuhan sadis.

Dalam sebuah artikel di Toronto Life, Karen K Ho — yang kenal dengan keluarga Jennifer dan pernah satu sekolah dengannya — memberikan petunjuk tentang masa lalu gadis teladan yang kemudian berubah jadi otak pembunuhan orangtuanya sendiri.

Lingkaran Setan Kebohongan
Orangtua Jennifer mengira, putrinya adalah murid teladan, pelajar kelas “A”. Namun, nyatanya ia hanyalah kelas “B”.

Mendapatkan nilai B masih lumayan bagi siswa lain. Namun, di keluarga Jennifer merupakan itu aib.

Untuk menutupinya, Jennifer memalsukan raportnya, menutupi ketidakmampuannya. Meski demikian, nilainya masih lumayan, ia pun diterima di Ryerson University di Toronto. Namun, tak jadi mendapatkannya, gara-gara gagal dalam mata pelajaran kalkulus di akhir masa studinya.

Tak ingin mengecewakan orangtuanya, perempuan berkacamata itu berpura-pura kuliah. Ia mengaku akan belajar sains selama 2 tahun di Ryerson University, sebelum melanjutkan kuliah di jurusan farmasi di University of Toronto yang terkemuka.

Jennifer mengumpulkan buku-buku bekas, berbohong bahwa ia mendapatkan beasiswa sehingga orangtuanya tak curiga mengapa mereka tak pernah dimintai uang untuk membayar kuliah.

Suatu malam pada tahun 2010, Jennifer memutuskan untuk mengeksekusi rencananya. Kala itu, jarum jam menunjuk ke pukul 22.00. Crawford, Mylvaganam, dan pria ketiga bernama Eric Carty memasuki pintu depan rumah target. Mereka semua membawa senjata.

Sang ayah, Hann ditembak 2 kali, salah satunya di bagian muka. Sementara ibunya, Bich ditembak 3 kali di kepala dan tewas seketika. Ajaibnya, Hann selamat dan mengingat semua yang terjadi pada momentum mengerikan itu.

Pada 2014, pengadilan atas kasus tersebut digelar. “Saat vonis bersalah dijatuhkan, Jennifer tak menunjukkan emosinya. Datar. Namun, saat awak media meninggalkan ruang sidang, ia menangis dan gemetar tak terkendali,” demikian dikabarkan Toronto Life, seperti dikutip dari New.com.au, Selasa (28/7/2015).

Dengan dakwaan tingkat pertama, Jennifer divonis seumur hidup, tanpa kesempatan mengajukan pembebasan bersyarat selama 25 tahun. Ia berusia 28 tahun saat duduk sebagai pesakitan.

“Dan untuk dakwaan percobaan pembunuhan terhadap ayahnya, ia juga divonis menerima hukuman seumur hidup, yang akan dijalani secara bersamaan.” Carty, Mylvaganam, dan Crawford masing-masing menerima hukuman serupa.
