Cleopatra adalah puteri Ptolemy Auletes (Ptolemy XII), salah satu dinasti Ptolemy kerajaan Mesir Kuno mantan orang kepercayaan Alexander The Great raja Macedonia. Ptolemy XII mempunyai empat puteri dan dua putra. Namun semuanya meninggal semasa masih sangat muda.

Ia punya nama lengkap Cleopatra Selene Philopator. Namun dikenal sebagai Cleopatra VII. Cleoptara lahir pada tahun 69 Sebelum Masehi (SM) di Alexandria, Mesir dan meninggal dunia di usia 39 tahun pada 30SM.

Ia merupakan Seorang Firaun Mesir terakhir yang menggunakan senjata “Kewanitaan” untuk mempertahankan takhta dan pengaruhnya. Ia merupakan ratu cantik mempesona yang boleh mempengaruhi tokoh besar Romawi seperti Julius Caesar dan Mark Anthony.

Dalam sejarah Mesir,Cleopatra bernikah sebanyak dua kali, kedua-dua perkahwinannya adalah dengan adik beradiknya sendiri. Yang pertama cleopatra berkahwin dengan Ptolemeus XIII, namun kemudian ia meninggal.

Cleopatra diangkat menjadi ratu pada usia 18 tahun setelah Ia mengahwini adik lelakinya yang baru berusia 12 tahun, yang kemudian menjadi raja Ptolemeus XIV.

Namun dalam pernikahanya tidak diwarnai dengan hubungan seks. Dalam hal ini mengahwini saudara kandung merupakan kebiasaan pada masa itu dalam budaya Mesir, kerana sebagai Pharaoh mereka dianggap keturunan dewa, dan hanya akan mengahwini sesama dewa.

Romawi merupakan kerajaan dan sumber kekuatan terbesar di “Dunia Barat” pada masa itu (510SM – 476M). Namun dalam sejarah kejayaan selama 500 tahun, Romawi juga mengalami perang saudara.

Diujung perang saudara yang paling teruk dalam sejarah Romawi. Ketika itu juga kerajaan Mesir kuno merupakan kerajaan yang terbesar yang ditakluki oleh Cleopatra.

Julius Caesar
Saat itu Cleopatra, sedang mempersiapkan pemberontakan melawan suami yang juga adiknya, Ptolemy XIII. Ia menghimpun kekuatan dengan merekrut pasukan bangsa Arab yang sangat besar. Sementara huru-hara di Romawi turut mempengaruhi Mesir.

Kerajaan Romawi, Pompey Yang Agung ditaklukkan ditakluki Julius Caesar di Yunani dan melarikan diri ke Mesir. Namun, di negeri itu ia segera dibunuh oleh agen-agen Ptolemy XIII. Caesar tiba di Alexandria dan ia mengetahui musuhnya telah tewas, dia memutuskan untuk mengambil alih kekuasaan di Mesir.

Setahun berlalu, Romawi berupaya menguasai kerajaan Mesir yang kaya-raya itu. Ini dimanfaatkan Cleopatra untuk meningkatkan cita-cita politiknya dengan menaklukkan hati Julius Caesar. Si Pemimpin Romawi ini sangat terpikat akan kecantikan Cleopatra dan atas namanya dia bersedia membantu Cleopatra menumbangkan Ptolemy XIII.

Pada 47 SM, Ptolemy XIII dibunuh setelah kekalahan melawan pasukan Romawi di bawah komando Julius Caesar. Cleopatra pun dinobatkan menjadi pemimpin.

Julius dan Cleopatra menghabiskan beberapa minggu bersama dan kemudian Caesar berangkat ke Asia kecil di mana dia menyatakan slogannnya Vini, vidi, vici (Aku datang, Aku lihat, Aku menang) setelah meredakan pemberontakan.

Pada Jun 47 SM, Cleopatra melahirkan seorang putera yang diakuinya adalah hasil hubungan dengan Caesar dan diberinama Caesarion (Caesar kecil).

Saat Caesar kembali ke Romawi, Cleopatra dan Caesarion ikut menyertainya. Cleopatra tinggal di sebuah villa miliki Caesar di luar ibu kota. Namun Caesar dibunuh pada Mac 44 SM dan Cleopatra kembali ke Mesir.

Setelah tewasnya Julius Caesar, Romawi kembali mengalami perang saudara. Mark Anthony seorang jenderal tentera, dan Lepidus seorang negarawan Romawi.

Anthony menjadi  pemerintahan di sejumlah provinsi bagian timur Kekaisaran Romawi, dan dia memanggil Cleopatra yang dituduhnya telah bersekongkol dengan musuhnya ke Tarsus di Asia kecil.

Saat itulah Mark Anthony bersekutu dengan Cleopatra yang menguasai Mesir. Keduanya pun menjalin asmara membara hingga Cleopatra melahirkan dua anak kembar Cleopatra Selena dan Alexander Helios. Namun keduanya berkahwin juga pada tahun 36 SM. Hasil perkahwinan itu lahirlah Ptolemy Philadelphus.

Mark Anthony
Cleopatra berusaha memikat Antony sebagaimana yang pernah ia lakukan terhadap Caesar dan pada 41 SM. Dia tiba di Tarsus dengan pakaian laksana Venus (Dewi cinta Romawi).

Anthony terpikat dengan kemolekan tubuh dan rupa Cleopatra. Antony dan Cleopatra kemudian pergi bersama ke Alexandria. Disini mereka menghabiskan musim sejuk dengan pesta dan percintaan yang hangat.

Pada 40 SM, Anthony kembali ke Romawi dan menikahi saudara perempuan Octavian bernama Octavia dalam upayanya untuk menjadi sekutu Octavian. Sementara itu, kekuasaan tritunggal semakin memburuk.

Pada 37 SM, Antony berpisah dengan Octavia dan mengadakan perjalanan ke timur dengan tujuan untuk mengajak Cleopatra bergabung dengannya di Syria. Pada saat itu Cleopatra telah melahirkan bayi kembar lelaki dan perempuan.

Menurut pelaku propaganda Octavian, mereka lantas menikah yang mana hal ini dilarang oleh peraturan Roma yang melarang warganya menikah dengan bangsa asing.

Untuk meraikan kemenangan ini, dia telah meraikan kemenangan di sepanjang jalan-jalan di Alexandria di mana ia dan Cleopatra duduk di singgasana keemasan, dan Caesarion serta anak-anaknya diberi gelar kebangsawanan.

Banyak kalangan Romawi menilai (yang dipicu oleh Octavian) bahwa Antony berniat hendak menyerahkan Romawi ke tangan asing.

Ratu Cleoptra adalah penguasa paling kaya di Mediteranian, hubungannya dengan Mark Antony semakin menguatkan statusnya sebagai perempuan paling berpengaruh pada masa itu. Mereka berdua bersama – sama berusaha membentuk kerajaan baru.

Namun disinilah akhir kisah mereka berdua. Mark Antony terlibat perang saudara, ia mencuba melarikan diri mengikut Cleopatra ke mesir. Namun ia dikejar oleh musuhnya, dan Mark Antony akhirnya ditangkap.

Sementara itu kerajaan Romawi sudah berjaya ditadbir oleh Octavian dan Agrippa. Dewan Senat Romawi kemudian mendeklarasikan perang terhadap Mesir, dan meminta Mark Anthony untuk kembali bertugas ke Romawi.

Namun Anthony yang sudah menikahi Cleopatra dan sangat mencintai perempuan itu, menolak panggilan tugas dan berkhianat terhadap Romawi. Ia tetap berpihak pada Mesir dengan seluruh pasukannya.

Ia mati bunuh diri dengan pedangnya. Sedih melihat suaminya mati, Cleopatra pun mengambil jalan singkat. Ia mengurung diri  dan akhirnya bunuh diri dengan membiarkan ular berbisa mematuk tubuhnya.

Tewasnya Cleopatra, berakhirlah kejayaan kerajaan Mesir Kuno. Mesir kemudian takluk di bawah Romawi dan dijadikan salah satu proksi kerajaan  Romawi. Mayat Marks Anthony dan Cleoptara dimakamkan bersebelahan di sebuah piramid.
