Telah menjadi kebijakan Pemerintah Arab Saudi bahwa orang yang telah dikubur selama setahun kuburannya harus digali. Tulang belulang si mayat kemudian diambil dan disatukan dengan tulang belulang mayat lainnya. Selanjutnya semua tulang itu dikuburkan di tempat lain di luar kota.

Lubang kubur yang dibongkar dibiarkan tetap terbuka hingga datang jenazah berikutnya terus silih berganti. Kebijakan ini dijalankan tanpa pandang bulu. Siapapun dia, pejabat atau orang biasa, saudagar kaya atau orang miskin, sama terkena kebijakan tersebut.

Inilah yang juga menimpa makam Syaikh Nawawi Al-Bantani. Setelah kuburnya genap berusia satu tahun, datanglah petugas dari pemerintah kota untuk menggali kuburnya.

Tetapi yang terjadi adalah hal yang tak lazim. Para petugas kuburan itu tak menemukan tulang belulang seperti biasanya. Yang mereka temukan adalah satu jasad yang masih utuh. Tidak kurang satu apapun, tidak lecet atau tanda-tanda pembusukan seperti lazimnya jenazah yang telah lama dikubur.


Bahkan kain putih kafan penutup jasad beliau tidak sobek dan tidak lapuk sedikit pun.Terang saja kejadian ini mengejutkan para petugas. Mereka lari berhamburan mendatangi atasannya dan menceritakan apa yang telah terjadi. Setelah diteliti, sang atasan kemudian menyadari bahwa makam yang digali itu bukan makam orang sembarangan.

Langkah strategis lalu diambil. Pemerintah Arab Saudi melarang membongkar makam Syekh Nawawi Al-Bantani. Jasad beliau lalu dikuburkan kembali seperti sediakala. Hingga sekarang makam beliau tetap berada di Ma'la, Mekkah.

Syekh Nawawi Al-Jawi Al-Bantani (1813-1898)

Nama lengkapnya ialah Abu Abdul Mu’thi Muhammad Nawawi bin ‘Umar bin Arabi al-Jawi al-Bantani. Ia dilahirkan di Tanara, serang, Banten, pada tahun 1230 H/1813 M. Ayahnya seorang tokoh agama yang sangat disegani. Ia masih punya hubungan nasab dengan Maulana Syarif Hidayatullah atau Sunan Gunung Jati (Cirebon).

Pada usia 15 tahun, Nawawi muda pergi belajar ke Tanah Suci Mekkah, karena saat itu Indonesia –yang namanya masih Hindia Belanda- dijajah oleh Belanda, yang membatasi kegiatan pendidikan di Nusantara. Beberapa tahun kemudian, ia kembali ke Indonesia untuk menyalurkan ilmunya kepada masyarakat.

Tak lama ia mengajar, hanya tiga tahun, karena kondisi Nusantara masih sama, di bawah penjajahan oleh Belanda, yang membuat ia tidak bebas bergiat. Ia pun kembali ke Makkah dan mengamalkan ilmunya di sana, terutama kepada orang Indonesia yang belajar di sana.

Banyak sumber menyatakan Syekh Nawawi wafat di Makkah dan dimakamkan di Ma’la pada 1314 H/1897 M, namun menurut Al-A’lam dan Mu’jam Mu’allim, dua kitab yang membahas tokoh dan guru yang berpengaruh di dunia Islam, ia wafat pada 1316 H/1898 M.

Peran strategis bagi dunia dan Indonesia

Syekh Nawawi Al-Bantani adalah satu dari tiga ulama Indonesia yang mengajar di Masjid Al-Haram di Makkah Al-Mukarramah pada abad ke-19 dan awal abad ke-20. Dua yang lain ialah muridnya, Ahmad Khatib Minangkabau dan Syekh Mahfudz Termas. Ini menunjukkan bahwa keilmuannya sangat diakui tidak hanya di Indonesia, melainkan juga di semenanjung Arab.

Syekh Nawawi sendiri menjadi pengajar di Masjid al-Haram sampai akhir hayatnya yaitu sampai 1898, lalu dilanjutkan oleh kedua muridnya itu. Wajar, jika ia dimakamkan berdekatan dengan makam istri Nabi Muhammad, Khadijah ra di Ma’la.

Syekh Nawawi Al-Bantani mendapatkan gelar Sayyidu Ulama’ al-Hijaz yang berarti Sesepuh Ulama Hijaz atau Guru dari Ulama Hijaz atau Akar dari Ulama Hijaz. Yang menarik dari gelar di atas adalah beliau tidak hanya mendapatkan gelar Sayyidu ‘Ulama al-Indonesi sehingga bermakna, bahwa kealiman beliau diakui di semenanjung Arabia, apalagi di tanah airnya sendiri.

Selain itu, beliau juga mendapat gelar al-imam wa al-fahm al-mudaqqiq yang berarti Tokoh dan pakar dengan pemahaman yang sangat mendalam. Snouck Hourgronje member gelar “Doktor Teologi”.
