"Posisi Daw Aung San Su Kyi tepat dalam masalah Bengali ini dan dia mengatakan hal yang tepat," kata biksu Eaindar Sakka Biwintha.

"Jadi saya menerimanya dengan senang. Karena sikapnya itu, banyak orang membulan-bulaninya dengan dusta dan foto-foto yang diedit serta menghinanya di Facebook. Sungguh menjijikkan, menghina pemimpin negara."

Itu bukan dukungan yang akan disambut gembira Suu Kyi. Tapi apa yang dikatakan Ma Ba Tha sangat berarti. Karena mereka mampu memobilisasi dukungan rakyat terkait kebijakan pemerintah, dan di sisi lain menjadikan larangan pemerintah bagai sekadar main-main.

Tidak ada dukungan atau simpati terhadap Rohingya di kalangan sebagian besar penduduk Myanmar.

Salah satu pertemuan paling mengejutkan yang pernah saya hadapi adalah dengan juru bicara keamanan partainya Suu Kyi di Mandalay.

Myint Aung Mo yakin bahwa warga Budha di Rakhine adalah korban.

"Apa yang ingin saya katakan adalah wilayah Rakhine di Myanmartelah diserang oleh teroris. Saya ingin menekankan kelompok etnis kami. Saya tidak tahu mengenai Muslim. Saya hanya peduli dengan etnis Budha kami. Inilah yang ingin saya katakan."

Inilah kata-kata seorang pria yang mewakili sebuah partai yang seharusnya berkomitmen terhadap hak asasi manusia universal.

Jika dia harus mengutuk tindakan keras tersebut, atau bahkan meminta militer berhenti, pendukung Aung San Suu Kyi di sini akan berkurang jauh. Militer pun memahami hal ini dengan baik. Sementara sejumlah tokoh senior justru puas atas isolasi internasional yang dideritanya saat ini.

Di negara bagian Rakhine ini sebuah tragedi HAM dan kemanusiaan sedang berlangsung. Langkah-langkah keras militer mungkin saja berakhir dalam beberapa minggu, jika tidak dalam beberpa hari mendatang.

Namun persoalan kekuasaan militer dan nasionalisme kelompok Budha yang terungkap melalui tragedi di Rakhine memunculkan pertanyaan paling sulit bagi masa depan negara ini.
