Segala puji bagi Allah, Rabb semesta alam. Shalawat dan salam kepada Nabi kita Muhammad shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam.
Setelah kita mempelajari berbagai macam najis, selanjutnya kita akan mengenal bagaimanakah tata cara wudhu yang benar yang sesuai petunjuk Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam. Semoga dengan pembahasan ini pula dapat meluruskan kesalahan-kesalahan yang selama ini ada. Hanya Allah yang beri taufik.
Shalat Tidak Sah Tanpa Berwudhu
Dari Ibnu ‘Umar –radhiyallahu ‘anhuma-, beliau berkata, “Saya mendengar Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam bersabda,
لاَ تُقْبَلُ صَلاَةٌ بِغَيْرِ طُهُورٍ وَلاَ صَدَقَةٌ مِنْ غُلُولٍ
“Tidak ada shalat kecuali dengan thoharoh. Tidak ada sedekah dari hasil pengkhianatan.”[1]
An Nawawi –rahimahullah- mengatakan, “Hadits ini adalah nash[2] mengenai wajibnya thoharoh untuk shalat. Kaum muslimin telah bersepakat bahwa thoharoh merupakan syarat sah shalat.” [3]
Abu Hurairah mengatakan bahwa Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam bersabda,
لاَ تُقْبَلُ صَلاَةُ أَحَدِكُمْ إِذَا أَحْدَثَ حَتَّى يَتَوَضَّأَ
“Shalat salah seorang di antara kalian tidak akan diterima -ketika masih berhadats- sampai dia berwudhu.“[4]

حُمْرَانَ مَوْلَى عُثْمَانَ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ – رضى الله عنه – دَعَا بِوَضُوءٍ فَتَوَضَّأَ فَغَسَلَ كَفَّيْهِ ثَلاَثَ مَرَّاتٍ ثُمَّ مَضْمَضَ وَاسْتَنْثَرَ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاَثَ مَرَّاتٍ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ يَدَهُ الْيُمْنَى إِلَى الْمِرْفَقِ ثَلاَثَ مَرَّاتٍ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ يَدَهُ الْيُسْرَى مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ مَسَحَ رَأْسَهُ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ رِجْلَهُ الْيُمْنَى إِلَى الْكَعْبَيْنِ ثَلاَثَ مَرَّاتٍ ثُمَّ غَسَلَ الْيُسْرَى مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ ثُمَّ قَالَ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- تَوَضَّأَ نَحْوَ وُضُوئِى هَذَا ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ -صلى الله عليه وسلم- « مَنْ تَوَضَّأَ نَحْوَ وُضُوئِى هَذَا ثُمَّ قَامَ فَرَكَعَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ لاَ يُحَدِّثُ فِيهِمَا نَفْسَهُ غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ ». قَالَ ابْنُ شِهَابٍ وَكَانَ عُلَمَاؤُنَا يَقُولُونَ هَذَا الْوُضُوءُ أَسْبَغُ مَا يَتَوَضَّأُ بِهِ أَحَدٌ لِلصَّلاَةِ.
Humran pembantu Utsman menceritakan bahwa Utsman bin Affan radhiallahu ‘anhu pernah meminta air untuk wudhu kemudian dia ingin berwudhu. Beliau membasuh kedua telapak tangannya 3 kali, kemudian berkumur-kumur diiringi memasukkan air ke hidung, kemudian membasuh mukanya 3 kali, kemudian membasuh tangan kanan sampai ke siku tiga kali, kemudian mencuci tangan yang kiri seperti itu juga, kemudian mengusap kepala, kemudian membasuh kaki kanan sampai mata kaki tiga kali, kemudian kaki yang kiri seperti itu juga. Kemudian Utsman berkata, “Aku melihat Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam pernah berwudhu seperti wudhuku ini, kemudian beliau bersabda,
“Barangsiapa berwudhu seperti wudhuku ini kemudian dia shalat dua rakaat dengan khusyuk (tidak memikirkan urusan dunia dan yang tidak punya kaitan dengan shalat[5]), maka Allah akan mengampuni dosa-dosanya yang telah lalu”. Ibnu Syihab berkata, “Ulama kita mengatakan bahwa wudhu seperti ini adalah contoh wudhu yang paling sempurna yang dilakukan seorang hamba untuk shalat”.[6]
Dari hadits ini dan hadits lainnya, kita dapat meringkas tata cara wudhu Nabi shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam sebagai berikut.
Berniat –dalam hati- untuk menghilangkan hadats.
Membaca basmalah: ‘bismillah’.
Membasuh kedua telapak tangan sebanyak tiga kali.
Mengambil air dengan tangan kanan, lalu dimasukkan dalam mulut (berkumur-kumur atau
madmadho) dan dimasukkan dalam hidung (istinsyaq) sekaligus –melalui satu cidukan-. Kemudian air tersebut dikeluarkan (istintsar) dengan tangan kiri. Hal ini dilakukan sebanyak tiga kali.
Membasuh seluruh wajah sebanyak tiga kali dan menyela-nyela jenggot.
Membasuh tangan –kanan kemudian kiri- hingga siku dan sambil menyela-nyela jari-jemari.
Membasuh kepala 1 kali dan termasuk di dalamnya telinga. Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam bersabda, “Kedua telinga termasuk bagian dari kepala” (HR Ibnu Majah, disahihkan oleh Al Albani).
Tatacara membasuh kepala ini adalah sebagai berikut, kedua telapak tangan dibasahi dengan air.
Kemudian kepala bagian depan dibasahi lalu menarik tangan hingga kepala bagian belakang, kemudian menarik tangan kembali hingga kepala bagian depan. Setelah itu langsung dilanjutkan dengan memasukkan jari telunjuk ke lubang telinga, sedangkan ibu jari menggosok telinga bagian luar.
Membasuh kaki 3 kali hingga ke mata kaki dengan mendahulukan kaki kanan sambil membersihkan sela-sela jemari kaki.
Berikut catatan penting yang perlu diperhatikan dalam tata cara wudhu di atas.
Niat Cukup dalam Hati
Yang dimaksud niat adalah al qosd (keinginan) dan al irodah (kehendak).[7] Sedangkan yang namanya keinginan dan kehendak pastilah dalam hati, sehingga niat pun letaknya dalam hati.
Syaikhul Islam Ibnu Taimiyah –rahimahullah– mengatakan, “Letak niat adalah di hati bukan di lisan.
Hal ini berdasarkan kesepakatan para ulama kaum muslimin dalam segala macam ibadah termasuk shalat, thoharoh, zakat, haji, puasa, memerdekakan budak, jihad dan lainnya.”[8]
Ibnul Qayim –rahimahullah– mengatakan, “Nabi shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam –di awal wudhu– tidak pernah mengucapkan “nawaitu rof’al hadatsi (aku berniat untuk menghilangkan hadats …)”. Beliau pun tidak menganjurkannya. Begitu pula tidak ada seorang sahabat pun yang mengajarkannya. Tidak pula terdapat satu riwayat –baik dengan sanad yang shahih maupun dho’if (lemah)- yang menyebutkan bahwa beliau mengucapkan bacaan tadi.”[9]
Berkumur-kumur dan Memasukkan Air dalam Hidung Dilakukan Sekaligus Melalui Satu Cidukan Tangan
Ibnul Qayyim menyebutkan,
“Ketika berkumur-kumur dan memasukkan air dalam hidung (istinsyaq), terkadang Nabi shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam menggunakan satu cidukan tangan, terkadang dengan dua kali cidukan dan terkadang pula dengan tiga kali cidukan. Namun beliau menyambungkan (tidak memisah) antara kumur-kumur dan istinsyaq. Beliau menggunakan separuh cidukan tangan untuk mulut dan separuhnya lagi untuk hidung. Ketika suatu saat beliau berkumur-kumur dan istinsyaq dengan satu cidukan maka kemungkinan cuma dilakukan seperti ini yaitu kumur-kumur dan istinsyaq disambung (bukan dipisah).
Adapun ketika beliau berkumur-kumur dan istinsyaq dengan dua atau tiga cidukan, maka di sini baru kemungkinan berkumur-kumur dan beristinsyaq bisa dipisah. Akan tetapi, yang Nabi shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam contohkan adalah memisahkan antara berkumur-kumur dan istinsyaq. Sebagaimana disebutkan dalam shahihain[10] dari ‘Abdullah bin Zaid bahwa Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam tamadh-madho (berkumur-kumur) dan istinsyaq (memasukkan air dalam hidung) melalui air satu telapak tangan dan seperti ini dilakukan tiga kali. Dalam lafazh yang lain disebutkan bahwa tamadh-madho (berkumur-kumur) dan istinsyaq (memasukkan air dalam hidung) melalui tiga kali cidukan. Inilah riwayat yang lebih shahih dalam masalah kumur-kumur dan istinsyaq (memasukkan air dalam hidung).
Tidak ada satu hadits shahih pun yang menyatakan bahwa kumur-kumur dan istinsyaq dipisah. Kecuali ada riwayat dari Tholhah bin Mushorrif dari ayahnya dari kakeknya yang mengatakan bahwa dia melihat Nabi shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam memisah antara kumur-kumur dan istinsyaq[11]. Dan riwayat tersebut hanyalah berasal dari Tholhah dari ayahnya, dari kakeknya. Padahal kakekanya tidak dikenal sebagai seorang sahabat.”[12]
Membasuh Kepala Cukup Sekali
Ibnul Qayyim menjelaskan,
“Nabi shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam biasa membasuh kepalanya seluruh dan terkadang beliau membasuh ke depan kemudian ke belakang. Sehingga dari sini sebagian orang mengatakan bahwa membasuh kepala itu dua kali. Akan tetapi yang tepat adalah membasuh kepala cukup sekali (tanpa diulang). Untuk anggota wudhu lain biasa diulang. Namun untuk kepala, cukup dibasuh sekali. Inilah pendapat yang lebih tegas dan Nabi shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam tidak pernah berbeda dengan cara ini.
Adapun hadits yang membicarakan beliau membasuh kepala lebih dari sekali, terkadang haditsnya shahih, namun tidak tegas. Seperti perkataan sahabat yang menyatakan bahwa Nabi shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam berwudhu dengan mengusap tiga kali tiga kali. Seperti pula perkataan bahwa Nabi shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam membasuh kepala dua kali. Terkadang pula haditsnya tegas, namun tidak shahih. Seperti hadits Ibnu Al Bailamani dari ayahnya dari ‘Umar bahwa Nabi shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam mengusap tangannya tiga kali dan membasuh kepala juga tiga kali. Namun perlu diketahui bahwa Ibnu Al Bailamani dan ayahnya adalah periwayat yang lemah.”[13]
Kepala Sekaligus Diusap dengan Telinga
Telinga hendaknya diusap berbarengan setelah kepala karena telinga adalah bagian dari kepala.
Sebagaimana Nabi shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam bersabda,
الأُذُنَانِ مِنَ الرَّأْسِ
“Dua telinga adalah bagian dari kepala.” [14] Hadits ini adalah hadits yang lemah jika marfu’ (dianggap ucapan Nabi shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam). Akan tetapi hadits di atas dikatakan oleh beberapa ulama salaf di antaranya adalah Ibnu ‘Umar.[15]
Ash Shon’ani menjelaskan,
”Walaupun sanad hadits ini dikritik, akan tetapi ada berbagai riwayat yang menguatkan satu sama lain. Sebagai penguat hadits tersebut adalah hadits yang mengatakan bahwa membasuh dua telinga adalah sekaligus dengan kepala sebanyak sekali. Hadits yang menyebutkan seperti ini amatlah banyak, ada dari ‘Ali, Ibnu ‘Abbas, Ar Robi’ dan ‘Utsman. Semua hadits tersebut bersepakat bahwa membasuh kedua telinga sekaligus bersama kepala dengan melalui satu cidukan air, sebagaimana hal ini adalah makna zhohir (tekstual) dari kata marroh (yang artinya: sekali). Jika untuk membasuh kedua telinga digunakan air yang baru, tentu tidak dikatakan, “Membasuh kepala dan telinga sekali saja”. Jika ada yang memaksudkan bahwa beliau tidaklah mengulangi membasuh kepala dan telinga, akan tetapi yang dimaksudkan adalah mengambil air yang baru, maka ini pemahaman yang jelas keliru.
Adapun riwayat yang menyatakan bahwa air yang digunakan untuk membasuh kedua telinga berbeda dengan kepala, itu bisa dipahami kalau air yang ada di tangan ketika membasuh kepala sudah kering, sehingga untuk membasuh telinga digunakan air yang baru.”[16]
Seluruh Kepala Dibasuh, Bukan Hanya Ubun-Ubun Saja
Allah Ta’ala berfirman,
وَامْسَحُوا بِرُءُوسِكُمْ
“Dan basuhlah kepala kalian.” (QS. Al Maidah: 6)
Fungsi huruf baa’ dalam ayat di atas adalah lil ilsoq artinya melekatkan dan bukan li tab’idh (menyebutkan sebagian). Maknanya sama dengan membasuh wajah ketika tayamum, sebagaimana dalam ayat,
فَامْسَحُوا بِوُجُوهِكُمْ
“Dan basuhlah wajah kalian.” (QS. Al Maidah: 6). Dua dalil di atas masih berada dalam konteks ayat yang sama. Mengusap wajah pada tayamum bukan hanya sebagian (namun seluruhnya) sehingga yang dimaksudkan dengan mengusap kepala adalah mengusap seluruh kepala.
Syaikhul Islam Ibnu Taimiyah menjelaskan,
“Apabila ayat yang membicarakan tentang tayamum tidak mengatakan bahwa mash (membasuh) wajah hanya sebagian padahal tayamum adalah pengganti wudhu dan tayamum jarang-jarang dilakukan, bagaimana bisa ayat wudhu yang menjelaskan mash (membasuh) kepala cuma dikatakan sebagian saja yang dibasuh padahal wudhu sendiri adalah hukum asal dalam berthoharoh dan sering berulang-ulang dilakukan?! Tentu yang mengiyakan hal ini tidak dikatakan oleh orang yang berakal.”[17]
Begitu pula terdapat dalam hadits lain dijelaskan bahwa membasuh kepala adalah seluruhnya dan bukan sebagian. Dalilnya,
عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ قَالَ أَتَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ – صلى الله عليه وسلم – فَأَخْرَجْنَا لَهُ مَاءً فِى تَوْرٍ مِنْ صُفْرٍ فَتَوَضَّأَ ، فَغَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ ثَلاَثًا وَيَدَيْهِ مَرَّتَيْنِ مَرَّتَيْنِ ، وَمَسَحَ بِرَأْسِهِ فَأَقْبَلَ بِهِ وَأَدْبَرَ ، وَغَسَلَ رِجْلَيْهِ
Dari ‘Abdullah bin Zaid, ia berkata, “Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam datang, lalu kami mengeluarkan untuknya air dalam bejana dari kuningan, kemudian akhirnya beliau berwudhu. Beliau mengusap wajahnya tiga kali, mengusap tangannya dua kali dan membasuh kepalanya, dia menarik ke depan kemudian ditarik ke belakang, kemudian terakhir beliau mengusap kedua kakinya.[18]
Dalam riwayat lain dikatakan,
وَمَسَحَ رَأْسَهُ كُلَّهُ
“Beliau membasuh seluruh kepalanya.”[19]
Syaikhul Islam Ibnu Taimiyah menjelaskan, “Tidak ada satu pun sahabat yang menceritakan tata cara wudhu Nabi yang mengatakan bahwa Nabi shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam hanya mencukupkan dengan membasuh sebagian kepala saja.”[20] Namun ketika Nabi shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam membasuh ubun-ubun, beliau juga sekaligus membasuh imamahnya.[21]
Sedangkan untuk wanita muslimah tata cara membasuh kepala tidak dibedakan dengan pria. Akan tetapi, boleh bagi wanita untuk membasuh khimarnya saja. Akan tetapi, jika ia membasuh bagian depan kepalanya disertai dengan khimarnya, maka itu lebih bagus agar terlepas dari perselisihan para ulama. Wallahu a’lam.[22]
