 Malaysia menjadi juara umum di SEA Games ke-29. Sepanjang sejarah, inilah salah satu pencapaian terbaik Malaysia dengan 145 medali emas, 92 perak dan 86 perunggu. Kemenangan ini disambut gegap gempita oleh rakyat Malaysia.

Sebaliknya dengan Indonesia. Baru kali ini Indonesia menorehkan prestasi seburuk SEA Games di Kuala Lumpur 2017. Indonesia meraih peringkat kelima dengan perolehan 38 emas, 63 perak dan 90 perunggu.

Sejumlah pihak menyoroti prestasi Indonesia di SEA Games yang sangat menurun. Kemana hilangnya prestasi Indonesia yang belasan kali selalu menyabet juara umum di kompetisi bergengsi se-Asia Tengara ini?

Keikutsertaan Indonesia di kompetisi internasional sempat berhenti setelah Orde Lama berakhir. Baru tahun 1977 Indonesia kembali ke gelanggang dan mengikuti SEA Games untuk pertama kalinya. Saat itu SEA Games diikuti tujuh negara dan digelar di Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Tokoh olahraga nasional Mangombar Ferdinand Siregar melukiskan kenangan itu. Kontingen Indonesia terdiri dari 313 orang, dengan perincian 193 atlet putra dan 72 atlet putri dari 17 cabang yang dipertandingkan. Sisanya merupakan oficial dan perwakilan KONI.

"Sebagai pendatang baru kontingen Indonesia hanya dipandang sebelah mata. Tak ada media yang memuat berita tentang kontingen Indonesia. Bahkan saat tiba di bandara tak disambut sama sekali. Kami jalan sendiri ke penginapan," kata MF Siregar.

Demikian ditulis dalam buku MF Siregar, Matahari Olahraga Indonesia terbitan Kompas. Buku ini ditulis Brigitta Isworo Laksmi dan Primastuti Handayani.

Indonesia langsung menggebrak di arena. Satu demi satu pertandingan dimenangkan oleh atlet-atlet Indonesia. Merah putih dan Indonesia Raya terus bergema di ibukota negeri jiran tersebut.

Kontingen lain melongo. Indonesia terus melaju tak terkalahkan di SEA Games ke IX.

'Anak bawang' yang baru ikut itu langsung menjungkirbalikkan dominasi Thailand. Indonesia jadi juara umum dengan 62 medali emas, 41 perak dan 39 perunggu. Disusul Thailand dengan 37 emas, 35 perak dan 33 perunggu. Sementara Malaysia harus puas di posisi lima dengan 21 medali emas, 17 perak dan 21 perunggu.

Barulah semua negara peserta angkat topi. Media massa Malaysia menunjukkan respek mereka dengan menulis kemenangan kontingen Indonesia di halaman satu. "Vidi, Vini, Vici Indonesia!" tulis mereka.

Semenjak itu Indonesia terus melaju tak terkalahkan di SEA Games. Anak-anak merah putih menjadi juara umum tahun 1979, 1981, 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991, 1993 dan 1997. Hanya dua kali Indonesia menjadi peringkat kedua yaitu di SEA Games 1985 dan 1995 yang keduanya digelar di Thailand.

Tak sekali pun di era Presiden Soeharto, Malaysia punya kesempatan menjadi juara umum SEA Games.

Apa kunci kemenangan Indonesia?

MF Siregar membeberkan sebelum ikut SEA Games tahun 1977, Indonesia telah mengirim atlet mereka ke luar negeri. Tak ada kata main-main untuk mengejar prestasi. Ajang SEA Games adalah pertaruhan kehormatan bangsa.

Bahkan MF Siregar menyebut para perenang Indonesia digembleng secara khusus selama dua tahun di San Diego, Amerika Serikat. Mereka mendapat dukungan penuh dana dari PT Pertamina dan KONI Pusat.

Presiden Soeharto turun langsung memantau perkembangan atlet dan persiapannya. Bahkan dia perintahkan semua kementerian memberi bantuan penuh untuk pelaksanaan SEA Games dengan hasil maksimal. Soeharto juga mencanangkan hari olahraga nasional 9 September 1983.

Setelah Soeharto turun, prestasi Indonesia di SEA Games menurun drastis. Tahun 2001, untuk pertama kalinya Malaysia bisa meraih juara umum di SEA Games.

Gelar juara umum umum baru bisa dirasakan lagi oleh Indonesia tahun 2011, saat SEA Games digelar di Jakarta dan Palembang. Hanya satu kali itu semenjak era reformasi.

"Sedih melihat di papan biasanya Indonesia selalu di atas kini harus terus berada di bawah Malaysia, Vietnam dan Thailand," komentar masyarakat.
