Buruh migran memicu pesatnya perkembangan Islam di Prancis. Islam adalah agama yang damai, universal, dan rahmat bagi seluruh alam. Karena dasar itu, agama Islam pun dapat diterima dengan baik di berbagai belahan muka bumi ini. Mulai dari jazirah Arabia, Asia, Afrika, Amerika, hingga Eropa.

Pada abad ke-20, Islam berkembang dengan sangat pesat di daratan Eropa. Perlahan-lahan, masyarakat di benua biru yang mayoritas beragama Kristen dan Katholik ini mulai menerima kehadiran Islam. Tak heran bila kemudian Islam menjadi salah satu agama yang mendapat perhatian serius dari masyarakat Eropa.

Di Prancis, Islam berkembang pada akhir abad ke-19 dan awal ke-20 M. Bahkan, pada tahun 1922, telah berdiri sebuah masjid yang sangat megah bernama Masjid Raya Yusuf di ibu kota Prancis, Paris. Hingga kini, lebih dari 1000 masjid berdiri di seantero Prancis.

Di negara ini, Islam berkembang melalui para imigran dari negeri Maghribi, seperti Aljazair, Libya, Maroko, Mauritania, dan lainnya. Sekitar tahun 1960-an, ribuan buruh Arab berimigrasi (hijrah) secara besar-besaran ke daratan Eropa, terutama di Prancis.

Saat ini, jumlah penganut agama Islam di Prancis mencapai tujuh juta jiwa. Dengan jumlah tersebut, Prancis menjadi negara dengan pemeluk Islam terbesar di Eropa. Menyusul kemudian negara Jerman sekitar empat juta jiwa dan Inggris sekitar tiga juta jiwa.

Peran buruh migran asal Afrika dan sebagian Asia itu membuat agama Islam berkembang dengan pesat. Para buruh ini mendirikan komunitas atau organisasi untuk mengembangkan Islam. Secara perlahan-lahan, penduduk Prancis pun makin banyak yang memeluk Islam.

Karena pengaruhnya yang demikian pesat itu, Pemerintah Prancis sempat melarang buruh migran melakukan penyebaran agama, khususnya Islam. Pemerintah Prancis khawatir organisasi agama Islam yang dilakukan para buruh tersebut akan membuat pengkotak-kotakan masyarakat dalam beberapa kelompok etnik. Sehingga, dapat menimbulkan disintegrasi dan dapat memecah belah kelompok masyarakat.

Tak hanya itu, pintu keimigrasian bagi buruh-buruh yang beragama Islam pun makin dipersempit, bahkan ditutup. Meski demikian, masyarakat Arab yang ingin berpindah ke Prancis tetap meningkat. Pintu ke arah sana semakin terbuka.

Pelajar Muslim Pada tahun 1970-an, imigran Muslim kembali mendatangi negara pencetus trias politica itu. Kali ini, para pelajar Muslim yang datang ke Prancis untuk menuntut ilmu. Kedatangan para pelajar ini menjadi faktor penting yang mengambil peran besar dan penting dalam mendorong penyebaran Islam dan berkehidupan Islam di jantung negeri Napoleon Bonaparte ini.

Tahun 1985, diselenggarakan konferensi besar Islam yang dibiayai Rabithah Alam Islami (Organisasi Islam Dunia). Turut serta dalam konferensi itu 141 negara Islam dengan keputusan mendirikan Federasi Muslim Prancis.

Peristiwa besar ini tidak luput dari perhatian dunia, mengingat kehadiran umat Islam di salah satu negara Eropa selalu menjadi dilema bagi para penguasa setempat, terutama yang menyangkut ketenagakerjaan (buruh) dan masalah sosial.

Hasil konferensi dan terbentuknya federasi Muslim itu berhasil mempersatukan sebanyak 540 buah organisasi Islam di seluruh Prancis dan melindungi 1600 buah masjid, lembaga-lembaga pendidikan Islam, dan gedung-gedung milik umat Islam.

Dengan kondisi ini, barisan (saf) umat Islam pun semakin kokoh. Yang lebih menggembirakan lagi, kebanyakan anggota federasi yang menjalankan roda organisasi justru berasal dari kaum muda-mudi Muslim berkebangsaan Prancis sendiri.

Federasi ini bertujuan berperan aktif dalam menyukseskan kegiatan keislaman di Prancis dan memberikan pengetahuan dan pendidikan tentang Islam kepada warga Prancis.
Lembaga ini berperan besar dalam menjembatani umat Islam Prancis dengan pemerintah setempat, terutama dalam menyuarakan kepentingan umat Islam.
”Dengan kesepakatan ini, umat Islam punya hak yang sama dengan umat Katholik, Yahudi, dan Protestan,” kata seorang menteri di pemerintahan, Nicolas Sarkozy.

Organisasi itu merupakan gabungan dari tiga organisasi besar Islam di Prancis, yakni Masjid Paris, Federasi Nasional Muslim, dan Persatuan Organisasi Islam Prancis.
Pelarangan Jilbab Prancis, yang juga terkenal sebagai negara mode ini, pernah melarang Muslimah menggunakan jilbab sekitar tahun 1989. Pelajar Muslimah dikeluarkan dari kelas karena memakai jilbab, pekerja Muslimah dipecat dari kantornya karena mengenakan jilbab. Namun, mereka tidak menyerah begitu saja. Umat Islam Prancis menggoyang Paris dengan aksi-aksi demo menuntut kebebasan. Dan, umat Islam di berbagai negara pun turut melakukan protes atas kebijakan tersebut.

Akhirnya, pemerintah mengeluarkan kebijaksanaan pada 2 November 1992 yang memperbolehkan para siswi Muslimah untuk mengenakan jilbab di sekolah-sekolah negeri.
Sekarang, tampilnya wanita-wanita berjilbab di Prancis menjadi satu fenomena keislaman yang sangat kuat di negeri tersebut. Mereka bukan hanya hadir di masjid-masjid atau pusat-pusat keagamaan Islam lainnya, melainkan juga di sekolah-sekolah negeri, perguruan tinggi negeri, dan tempat-tempat umum lainnya.

Banyak hal yang memengaruhi perkembangan Islam di Perancis. Salah satunya adalah Perang Teluk 1991 yang menyebabkan munculnya krisis identitas di kalangan anak muda Muslim di Prancis. Kondisi ini mendorong mereka lebih rajin datang ke masjid. Gerakan Intifada di Palestina juga mendorong makin banyaknya Muslim Perancis yang beribadah ke masjid.
Umat Islam di Prancis memiliki peranan yang sangat penting. Mereka memainkan peranan dalam semua sektor. Mulai dari pendidikan, lembaga keuangan, pemerintahan, olahraga, sosial, dan lainnya.

Bahkan, pada Perang Dunia I dan II, umat Islam di Eropa tercatat turut menentang pendudukan Nazi. Keikutsertaan umat Islam dalam menentang pendudukan Nazi menjadi bagian tak terpisahkan dari sejarah perjuangan kemerdekaan Prancis.
Masjid dan Sekolah Islam MeningkatSeiring dengan berkembangannya agama Islam di negara Prancis, jumlah sarana ibadah dan kegiatan keislaman pun semakin meningkat.

Menurut survei yang dilakukan kelompok Muslim Prancis, sampai tahun 2003, jumlah masjid di seantero Prancis mencapai 1.554 buah. Mulai dari yang berupa ruangan sewaan di bawah tanah sampai gedung yang dimiliki oleh warga Muslim dan dibangun di tempat-tempat umum.
Perkembangan Islam dan masjid di Prancis juga ditulis oleh seorang wartawan Prancis yang juga pakar tentang Islam, Xavier Ternisien. Dalam buku terbarunya, Ternisien menulis, di kawasan Saint Denis, sebelah utara Prancis, terdapat kurang lebih 97 masjid, sementara di selatan Prancis sebanyak 73 masjid.

Ternisien menambahkan, masjid-masjid yang banyak berdiri di Prancis dengan kubah-kubahnya yang khas menunjukkan bahwa Islam kini makin mengemuka di negara itu. Islam di Prancis bukan lagi agama yang di masa lalu bergerak secara diam-diam.
”Masjid-masjid yang ada di Prancis kini bahkan dibangun atas tanah milik warga Muslim sendiri, bukan lagi di tempat sewaan seperti pada masa lalu,” ujarnya.

Tampaknya, pada tahun-tahun mendatang, jumlah masjid akan makin bertambah di Prancis. Sejumlah masjid yang ada sekarang terkadang tidak bisa menampung semua jamaah. Masjid di kawasan Belle Ville dan Barbes, misalnya, sebagian jamaah terpaksa harus shalat sampai ke pinggiran jalan.

Awalnya, masjid-masjid yang ada di Prancis didirikan oleh orang-orang Muslim asal Pakistan yang bekerja di pabrik-pabrik di Paris, Prancis. Mereka mengubah ruangan kecil tempat makan siang atau berganti pakaian menjadi ruangan untuk shalat. Terkadang, mereka menggunakan ruangan di asramanya sebagai sarana ibadah. Sehingga, hal itu terus berkembang dan menyebar.

Perkembangan yang terus meningkat itu membuat sebagian masyarakat Prancis khawatir. Masjid-masjid yang ada sering menjadi sasaran serangan yang berbau rasisme. Masa suram masjid di Prancis terjadi pada tahun 2001. Sejumlah masjid menjadi sasaran serangan dengan menggunakan bom molotov. Bahkan, ada masjid yang dibakar. Bentuk serangan lainnya adalah menggambari dinding-dinding masjid dan dinding rumah imam-imam masjid dengan lambang swastika. Namun, sejauh ini, belum ada organisasi hak asasi manusia atau asosiasi Muslim yang mempersoalkan serangan-serangan itu.

Sekolah Tak hanya masjid yang tumbuh, lembaga pendidikan Islam di negeri mode ini pun turut berkembang. Sejumlah sekolah Islam berdiri di Prancis. Sampai kini, sedikitnya ada empat sekolah Muslim swasta.
”Pemerintah belum lama ini memberi izin untuk memulai operasi,” ujar Mahmoud Awwad, sponsor dan direktur sekolah Education et Savior.

Awalnya, sebuah sekolah didirikan di Vitrerie, pinggiran selatan Paris. Kurikulumnya disesuaikan dengan kurikulum pendidikan nasional Prancis, namun ada tambahan pelajaran khusus muatan lokal tentang keislaman, seperti bahasa Arab dan agama Islam.

Education et Savior adalah sekolah kedua yang dibuka di Paris setelah sekolah Reussite di pinggiran Aubervilliers, utara Paris, dan yang keempat di Prancis. Dua sekolah swasta Islam lainnya adalah Ibn Rushd di Kota Lille, utara Prancis, dan Al-Kindi di Kota Lyon.

Selama ini, umat Islam di Prancis ingin memiliki sekolah swasta Islam setelah Paris melarang jilbab dan simbol keagamaan di sekolah negeri empat tahun lalu. Siswi Muslim yang memakai jilbab akan dikeluarkan dari sekolah dan kondisi ini membuat masa depan mereka suram.
Awwad mengaku, pihaknya tidak sulit mendapatkan izin pendirian sekolah Islam. ”Tidak seperti sekolah Al-Kindi, kami tidak menemui rintangan,” ujar Awwad. Pembukaan Al-Kindi di Lyon mendapat hambatan saat dibuka pada 2006.

Academy of Lyon, badan pendidikan negara yang tertinggi di kota itu, menolak izin operasional sekolah itu dan menutup sekolah dengan alasan pihak sekolah tidak memenuhi standar kebersihan dan keselamatan. Namun, Pengadilan Administratif di Lyon membatalkan penutupan itu pada Februari tahun lalu. Ini berarti sekolah Al-Kindi bisa membuka ajaran baru pada Maret 2007.

Menurut para pemimpin Muslim Prancis, insiden di Al-Kindi justru mendorong masyarakat Muslim untuk membuka sekolah serupa. ”Kontroversi Al-Kindi mendobrak ketakutan di minoritas Muslim untuk memiliki sekolah lebih banyak,” ujar Lhaj Thami Breze, ketua Organisasi Persatuan Islam di Prancis, UOIF.
