Ustadz Somad ditolak ceramah karena dituding bisa memecah belah persatuan hingga radikal, meski tak ada bukti ditunjukkan.
Apa yang menimpa dosen Universitas Islam Negeri Sultan Syarif Kasim, Pekanbaru, Riau, tersebut kemudian ramai diberitakan di Tanah Air.
Melihat kejadian tersebut, hati Muhammad Syamsi Ali atau Shamsi Ali, imam di Islamic Center of New York dan direktur Jamaica Muslim Center, sebuah yayasan dan masjid di kawasan timur New York, Amerika Serikat, terketuk dan kecewa kepada pihak yang menolak.
Dia merasa sangat aneh jika Ustaz Somad dituding melalui hal yang tak logis.
"Tapi jika seorang Abdul Somad yang sopan, santun, imbang dan moderat, menghormati perbedaan, cinta sesama Muslim dan sesama manusia, dan cinta damai dicekal? Lalu siapa lagi yang dianggap tidak radikal? Apakah menyampaiakan Islam dengan jujur dan apa adanya itu radikal?," demikian ditulis alumnus Pondok Pesantren Muhammadiyah Darul-Arqam, Makassar, Sulawesi Selatan, ini melalui akunnya pada Facebook.
Shamsi Ali yang telah mempelajari ceramah Ustaz Somad melalui media sosial YouTube, menilai isi ceramah beliau selama ini sangat bagus, bukan ujaran kebencian yang bisa memecah belah persatuan.
"Justru yang membuat saya terkagum dengan beliau adalah keseimbangan dalam memahami Islam. Mungkin bahasa populernya beliau sangat moderat dalam pemahaman. Tidak ekstrim ke samping mana saja, baik kiri maupun kanan," demikian ditulisnya.
"Tapi yang lebih penting adalah keluasan ilmu dan referensi agama yang beliau miliki. Sungguh saya senang ketika seseorang beragumentasi dan menyampaikan argumentasi dengan referensi dan pemahaman yang luas," tulisnya lagi.
Selain mempelajari ceramah Ustaz Somad melalui YouTube, Shamsi Ali juga mencoba mengenalnya dengan cara bertemu langsung beliau.
Pada Juli 2017 lalu, ketika dia ke Indonesia, dia bertemu di tempat Ustaz Muhammad Arifin Ilham dan saat ke Makassar.
Setelah bertemu dengan Ustaz Somad, Shamsi Ali kemudian mencoba mengajak beliau ke Amerika Serikat.
"Subhanallah beliau dengan sangat hormat dan lapang dada merespons dengan positif undangan kami ke US insya Allah," tulis Shamsi Ali.
Namun, melalui tulisannya, Shamsi Ali tak menyebutkan kapan Ustaz Somad akan berangkat ke Amerika.

Ust. Abdul Somad yang saya kenal

Saya sangat kecewa dengan tindakan atau kebijakan sebagian pihak, baik dalam negeri maupun luar negeri, terhadap Ust. Abdul Somad. Kejadian Bali beberapa hari lalu, dan kejadian Hongkong juga tiga hari lalu sangat bertentangan dengan nilai-nilai yang dibanggakan oleh dunia, khususnya yang menganut paham demokrasi dengan kebebasan (freedom) sebagai esensi dasarnya.
Apapun alasannya pencekalan itu baik oleh oknum masyarakat maupun pemerintah sangat tidak sejalan dengan semangat kebebasan dan keragaman.
Dalam dunia demokrasi yang kita kenal, seperti Amerika, kebebasan ekspresi, berbicara dan berpendapat itu hak asasi manusia yang sangat dihormati. Dan tidak akan dianggap ancaman selama itu masih dalam batas opini atau bicara (speech). Maka mengeritik presiden sekalipun adalah hal wajar selama tidak ada ancaman, apalagi tindakan kekerasan (violence).
Sejujurnya saya belum terlalu lama mengenal Ust. Abdul Somad, MA. Baru sekitar bulan Juli lalu saya kembali ke Jakarta dan salah seorang pengurus Islamic Center Jakarta memberikan usulan agar ceramah-ceramah saya direkam. Menurutnya ada seorang Ust. saat ini yang menjadi magnet, disenangi di mana-mana. Beliaupun menyebutkan nama itu, Ust. Abdul Somad.
Dari situlah saya menjadi ingin tahu siapa gerangan sosok itu. Saya cari beliau di youtube, dan subhanallah, beliau adalah sosok ulama yang luar biasa. Saya tidak terlalu tertarik dengan kepopulerannya. Karena bintang film juga banyak yang populer, politisi juga demikian. Bagi saya banyak cara untuk populer. Teroris juga populer karena kejahatannya.
Justeru yang membuat saya terkagum dengan beliau adalah keseimbangan dalam memahami Islam. Mungkin bahasa populernya beliau sangat moderat dalam pemahaman. Tidak ekstrim ke samping mana saja, baik kiri maupun kanan.
Tapi yang lebih penting adalah keluasan ilmu dan referensi agama yang beliau miliki. Sungguh saya senang ketika seseorang beragumentasi dan menyampaikan argumentasi dengan referensi dan pemahaman yang luas.
Maka ceramah-ceramah yang diselingi dengan humor-humor yang sesuai dan mengena bagi saya memang sangat wajar jika memiliki daya atraksi yang tinggi. Sehingga di mana-mana beliau dicari, diterima oleh massa yang sangat besar.
Karakter mulia
Tapi yang paling saya kagumi dari guru kita ini adalah kesederhanaan, apa adanya, dan insya Allah mengatakan dan melakukan semuanya tanpa dipoles-poles. Beliau melakukan dakwah tampa pilih, di kota besar atas undangan pejabat besar atau dipelosok desa atas undangan rakyat kecil. Bagi beliau semuanya punya hak yang sama.
Melalui berbagai ceramah di youtube, saya diam-diam memang jatuh hati baik oleh pemikiran dan pendapat keagamaan beliau maupun cara penyampaian yang berkarakter dan menyegarkan. Bahkan jujur saya banyak menimba ilmu baru dan segar dari ceramah-ceramah beliau.
Oleh karenanya saya memutuskan untuk mengundang beliau. Saya mencari kontak beliau dan mengontak beliau. Subhanallah beliau dengan sangat hormat dan lapang dada merespon dengan positif undangan kami ke US insya Allah.
Keinginan saya untuk mengundang beliau adalah selain memberikan tausiah-tausiah ke masyarakat Indonesia di Amerika, juga seorang ustadz, apalagi sebesar nama beliau perlu diberikan akses global. Bahwa keluasan ilmu agama menjadi sangat penting untuk dibarengi oleh pengalaman yang lebih banyak sehingga wawasan akan semakin menjadi luas pula.
Maka saya berusaha menemui beliau di saat ada kesempatan kembali ke tanah air. Kesempatan itupun terjadi di tempat Ust. Arifin Ilham, Sentul. Subhallah saya menemukan sosok yang luar biasa dalam kesederhanaan, kesahajaan, tapi memilii kharisma dalam kata dan penyampaian.
Dua hari setelah itu kembali kami dipertemukan di kampung halaman saya di Makassar. Saya sungguh kagum betapa beliau dikarunia Allah kemampuan keilmuan dan daya tarik sehingga massa begitu berlimpah untuk mendengarkan tausiah-tausiah beliau.
Maka mendengarkan berita penolakan dan pencekalan itu menjadikan saya kecewa, entah kepada siapa. Walau saya sadar bahwa da’wah itu alamiahnya pasti akan tertantang. Saya bukan mempermasalahkan itu. Tapi mereka yang menolak atau mencekal dengan tuduhan-tuduhan yang jahat, bahkan tanpa ada bukti.
Sempurnahkan Ust. Abdul Somad? Apakah beliau bersih sama sekali dari kekurangan dan kesalahan?
Kata orang Amerika, who the hell is perfect? Siapa yang sempurna?
Tapi jika seorang Abdul Somad yang sopan, santun, imbang dan moderat, menghormati perbedaan, cinta sesama Muslim dan sesama manusia, dan cinta damai dicekal? Lalu siapa lagi yang dianggap tidak radikal? Apakah menyampaiakan Islam dengan jujur dan apa adanya itu radikal?
Kalau ternyata radikalisme itu dipahami demikian, maka saya mengatakan tidak setuju dengan konsep moderasi. Jika moderasi berarti menyembunyikan kebenaran, mengesampingkan keadilan, maka masanya kita perlu merumuskan konsep moderasi yang berbeda. Wallahu a’lam!
