Saja Pahad, sebuah desa kecil di Chhattisgarh, India, telah menghadapi kekurangan air yang parah.

Dengan hanya dua sumur yang tersedia, penduduk setempat hampir tidak bisa mendapatkan cukup air untuk memberi makan ternak mereka, apalagi mengairi hasil panen mereka.

Warga desa tidak tahu harus berbuat apa dan pemerintah mengabaikan keadaan mereka, tapi seorang remaja “gila” mencoba melakukan sesuatu dengan caranya sendiri.

Shyam Lal baru berusia 15 tahun saat dia mencoba untuk mengatasi masalah air di desanya.

Dia mengidentifikasi sebuah tempat di hutan terdekat dan memutuskan untuk menggali sebuah kolam untuk mengumpulkan curah hujan yang kemudian bisa digunakan oleh seluruh desa.

Lal berbagi idenya dengan warga Saja Pahad lainnya, tapi bukannya dengan sukarela untuk membantu, mereka hanya menertawakan rencana gila itu dan memanggilnya orang gila.

Tapi pemuda itu tidak membiarkan reaksi orang tersebut mengecewakannya.

Sebagai gantinya, dia meraih sekop dan mulai menggali kolam itu sendiri.

Dia terus menggali hingga sampai 27 tahun ke depan.

Sekarang umur Shyam Lal sudah 42 tahun, ia dianggap sebagai pahlawan dan penyelamat oleh warga desanya.

Lubang kecil yang mulai digali hampir tiga dasawarsa yang lalu ini sekarang merupakan kolam setinggi 15 meter yang dipenuhi air berharga yang melayani seluruh desa.

“Tidak ada yang membantu saya dalam pekerjaan saya, baik administrasi maupun penduduk desa,” kata Lal dengan bangga mengatakan kepada Hindustan Times, menambahkan bahwa itu adalah mimpinya untuk mendapatkan cukup air untuk seluruh desa dan ternak mereka.

Kisah penentuan Shyam Lal baru-baru ini menjadi viral di seluruh India, dan mendorong pihak berwenang di distrik Mahendragarh untuk akhirnya mengakui prestasinya.

Seorang anggota dewan legislatif daerah baru-baru ini mengunjungi Saja Pahad dan menawarkan hadiah Nobel sebesar 10.000 ($ 156) atas kontribusinya kepada desa tersebut.
