Dilansir dari Daily Mail, Jumat (19/1/2018), dokter mengatakan jika Wasser mengidap penyakit tersebut setelah melihat berbagai gejala yang terjadi.
Pada kejadian yang pertama, Wasser tak sadarkan diri di lantai kamar tidurnya.
Saat kejadian berlangsung, tidak ada siapa pun di rumahnya.
Untungnya, sang ibu segera memanggil polisi untuk melakukan pemeriksaan kesehatan begitu tidak mendengar kabar dari putrinya untuk beberapa saat.
Saat menjalani perawatan di rumah sakit, panas tubuhnya mencapai 40 derajat celsius, hingga membuatnya mengalami serangan jantung dan organ tubuhnya mulai gagal.
Dokter pun memutuskan untuk membuatnya koma dengan melakukan induksi secara medis.
Rupanya, kondisi Wasser tersebut dipengaruhi oleh penggunaan tampon.
Tampon merupakan produk kesehatan wanita yang berbentuk silinder.
Biasanya, benda itu digunakan saat sedang menstruasi, dan memiliki fungsi sama dengan pembalut.
Sindrom TTS sendiri muncul karena adanya infeksi bakteri yang sangat berbahaya.
Namun, bisa jadi salah diagnosis karena beberapa penyakit lain juga memiliki gejala yang sama.
TTS akan terjadi ketika bakteri Staphylococcus aureus atau Streptococcus yang tidak berbahaya hidup di kulit dan menyerang aliran darah, sehingga menghasilkan racun yang berbahaya.
Gejala awal yang muncul, biasanya ditandai dengan demam tinggi yang mendadak bersuhu di atas 38,9 celcius.
Setelah itu, dalam beberapa jam, penderita akan mengalami gejala mirip flu termasuk sakit kepala, sakit otot, juga sakit pada tenggorokan dan batuk.
Selanjutnya diikuti dengan mual dan muntah, diare, perasaan ingin pingsan, pusing dan bingung.
Rupanya, perempuan berisisko tinggi mengalaminya.
Terutama saat sedang dalam kondisi menstruasi, dan menggunakan tampon, usai melahirkan, atau penggunaan alat kontrasepsi penghalang internal seperti diafragma.
Bakteri ini akan berkembang ketika para wanita yang menggunakan tampon jarang menggantinya.
Sindrom ini menginfeksi lebih dari 100 ribu wanita setiap tahunnya.
Penyakit ini pernah menjadi berita utama pada akhir 1970-an dan awal 1980-an setelah kematian beberapa wanita muda yang menggunakan merek tampon super penyerap yang kemudian dilarang beredar di pasaran.
