Gunung yang dipahat kaum Tsamud dan dijadikan sebagai tempat tinggal mereka. Tempat tinggal mereka itu terletak di wilayah Madain Saleh, sekitar 440 km dari Madinah. Kaum Tsamud dikenal sebagai arsitektur yang sangat ulung karena mereka mampu membuat rumah yang dipahat di gunung-gunung.
Mereka tinggal di rumah-rumah yang memiliki tiang-tiang yang besar sebagaimana difirmankan Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala :
“(Yaitu) penduduk Iram (ibu kota tempat tinggal kaum ‘Aad) yang mempunyai bangunan-bangunan yang tinggi–Yang belum pernah dibangun (suatu kota) seperti itu, di negeri-negeri lain,” (QS. Al Fajr: 7-8)
Dalam Al-Qur’an banyak sekali dijelaskan tentang kehancuran bangsa-bangsa atau kaum terdahulu, yaitu kaum yang tidak mau beriman kepada Allah SWT. diantaranya bangsa ‘Ad (umat Nabi Hud AS), kaum Tsamud (umat Nabi Saleh AS), bangsa Madyan (umat Nabi Syuaib AS), kaum Nabi Luth AS, Nabi Ibrahim AS serta kaum Nabi Nuh AS.
Seperti umat lainnya, umat Nabi Saleh AS yaitu kaum Tsamud, juga dihancurkan karena mereka tidak mau beriman kepada Allah dan tidak mengakui Saleh sebagai seorang Nabi. Mereka dihancurkan oleh Allah dengan adzab yang sangat mengerikan, yakni berupa petir yang menggelegar sehingga meruntuhkan bangunan tempat tinggal mereka.
“Dan satu suara yang keras yang mengguntur menimpa orang-orang yang zhalim itu, lalu mati bergelimpangan di tempat tinggal mereka, seolah-olah mereka belum pernah berdiam di tempat itu. Ingatlah, sesungguhnya kaum Tsamud mengingkari Tuhan mereka. Ingatlah, kebinasaanlah bagi kaum Tsamud.”(QS. Hud[11]:67-68)
Sebelumnya, kaum Tsamud ini diperintahkan untuk menyembah Allah dan mengikuti ajakan Nabi Saleh. Namun mereka enggan melakukannya. Bahkan, ajakan Nabi Saleh itu justru dianggap oleh mereka sebagai penghinaan terhadap kaum Tsamud. Di saat mereka mengikuti dakwah Nabi Saleh, mereka ingin bukti bahwa Nabi Saleh adalah seorang utusan Allah dengan sebuah mukjizat agar mereka bisa percaya.
Dan ketika ditanya apakah bila mukjizat itu diberikan, mereka mau beriman? Mereka mengatakan akan mengikutinya. Maka Nabi Saleh memohon kepada Allah agar menunjukkan kuasa-Nya. Allah memberikan mukjizat berupa seekor unta betina yang keluar dari sebuah batu besar. Awalnya, mereka mempercayainya. Namun kemudian mereka ingkar dan malah membunuh unta betina tersebut. Kemudian Nabi Saleh AS memperingatkan umatnya.
Cerita ini terdapat dalam surah Hud [11]: 61-68; Ibrahim [14]: 9; Al-A’raaf [7]:75-77; An-Naml [27]: 47-50; Al-Qamar [54]: 23-26; dan Asy-Syu’araa [26]:141-158.
Karena sikap mereka yang sombong dan angkuh itu, maka mereka pun harus menerima akibatnya dan dihancurkan oleh Allah SWT sebagaimana telah dilakukan pada kaum ‘Ad, umatnya Nabi Hud AS.
Bukti Arkeologis
Berdasarkan hasil studi arkeologi dan sejarah terkini mengenai kehidupan dan peninggalan bangsa Tsamud ini, para peneliti arkeologi berhasil menemukan dan mengungkap keberadaan kaum Tsamud, diantara Yaman Selatan dan Utara Madinah, yang disebut dengan nama Madain Saleh.
AlQuran menyebutkan, kaum Tsamud membuat rumah atau bangunan sesuai dengan gaya hidup mereka. Kaum Tsamud dan peninggalannya, seperti disebutkan dalam AlQuran, merupakan fakta sejarah yang dibenarkan oleh banyak temuan arkeologis saat ini.
Menurut penjelasan Al-Qur’an, kaum Tsamud merupakan anak cucu dari kaum ‘Ad. Hal ini dibuktikan dengan temuan arkeologis tentang keberadaan dan kehidupan mereka. Dijelaskan, kaum Tsamud dulunya hidup di Utara Semenanjung Arab yang berasal dari Selatan Arabia, tempat kaum ‘Ad pernah hidup.
Sumber-sumber sejarah mengungkapkan, sekelompok orang yang disebut dengan Tsamud benar-benar pernah ada. Masyarakat al-Hijr (batu) sebagaimana disebutkan dalam Al-Qur’an adalah sama dengan kaum Tsamud. Nama lain dari Tsamud adalah Ashab al-Hijr.
Dalam Ensiklopedia Islam, kata Tsamud adalah nama dari suatu kaum, sedangkan kata al-Hijr adalah salah satu diantara beberapa kota yang dibangun oleh orang-orang tersebut.
Seperti umat Nabi Hud yaitu kaum ‘Ad, ahli geografi Yunani yang bernama Pliny menggambarkan, bahwa Domatha dan Hegra adalah lokasi tempat tinggal kaum Tsamud. Tempat tersebut hingga kini dikenal dengan nama Kota Al-Hijr.
Sumber tertua yang berkaitan dengan kaum Tsamud adalah hikayat kemenangan Raja Babilonia, Sargon II (abad 8 SM) yang mengalahkan kaum Tsamud dalam pertempuran di Arabia Selatan.
Bangsa Yunani juga menghubungkan kaum ini sebagai Tamudaei, yakni Tsamud sebagaimana ditulis Aristoteles, Ptolemeus dan Pliny. Kaum Tsamud ini diperkirakan hidup pada abad ke-8 sebelum masehi, sekitar tahun 800 SM.
Dalam AlQuran, kaum ‘Ad dan Tsamud disebutkan secara bersamaan. Menurut para ahli tafsir, terdapat sebuah hubungan antara kedua kaum ini. Dan kaum ‘Ad pernah menjadi bagian dari sejarah kaum Tsamud.
Nabi Saleh AS memerintahkan umatnya untuk mengambil peringatan dan pelajaran dari kejadian yang pernah menimpa umat Nabi Hud (kaum ‘Ad). Sementara kaum ‘Ad ditunjukkan contoh dari kaum Nabi Nuh yang pernah hidup sebelum mereka. Kaum ‘Ad mempunyai kaitan penting dengan kaum Nabi Nuh AS. ketiga kaum ini mempunyai hubungan sejarah yang saling berkaitan.
Menurut AlQuran, kaum yang pertama kali dihancurkan adalah kaum Nuh.selanjutnya kaum Nabi Hud (‘Ad), kaum Nabi Saleh (Tsamud), kaum Nabi Luth yang melakukan hubungan sejenis, kemudian berturut-turut, kaum Nabi Musa (Firaun), kaum Nabi Syuaib (Madyan).
Menurut Harun Yahya dalam bukunya Jejak Bangsa-bangsa Terdahulu, umat Nabi Nuh dihancurkan pada tahun 3000-2500 SM, kaum Ibrahim dan Luth awal tahun 2000 SM, umat Musa tahun 1300 SM, umat Hud (‘Ad) 1300 SM dan umat Nabi Saleh (tsamud) sekitar tahun 800 SM.
Dalam beberapa sumber, urutan tersebut diatas belum sepenuhnya tepat. Namun dari data itu akan dihasilkan sebuah rangkaian yang sangat runtut (tertib), baik menurut AlQuran maupun data-data sejarah.
Sementara itu, menurut Sami binAbdullah Al-Maghluts dalam bukunyaAtlas Sejarah Nabi dan Rasul, Nabi Nuh AS hidup pada 3993-3043 SM, Nabi Hud AS pada 2450-2320 SM, Nabi Saleh AS pada 2150-2080 SM, Nabi Luth AS pada 1950-1870 SM, Nabi Musa AS pada 1527-1407 SM.
Pahatan Batu
Dari beberapa keterangan yang ada, Brittanica Micropediamenyebutkan bahwa di Arabia Kuno, sekelompok suku tampaknya telah memiliki keunggulan sejak sekitar abad 4 SM sampai pertengahan awal abad 7 M. meskipun kaum Tsamud kemungkinan asal-usulnya dari Arabia Selatan, sebuah kelompok besar rupanya pindah ke Utara pada awal-awal tahun, secara tradisional berdiam di lereng gunung (jabal) Athlab. Penelitian arkeologis terakhir mengungkapkan sejumlah besar batu bertulis dan gambar-gambar kaum Tsamud tidak hanya di Jabal Athlab, tetapi juga di seluruh Arabia Tengah (Brittanica Micropedia, Vol. 11, hlm 672).
Pada sekitar 2000 tahun silam, kaum Tsamud telah mendirikan sebuah kerajaan bersama bangsa arab lain dan diberi nama Nabataeans. Saat ini di lembah Rum yang juga disebut dengan Lembah Petra di Yordania dapat dilihat berbagai contoh karya pahat batu yang terbaik peninggalan kaum ini.
Sebagaimana disebutkan dalam AlQuran, Kaum Tsamud memiliki kemahiran dan keahlian dalam bidang pertukangan ukiran dan pahatan.
“Kamu dirikan istana-istana di tanah-tanah yang datar dan kamu pahat gunung-gunungnya untuk dijadikan rumah, maka ingatlah nikmat-nikmat Allah dan janganlah kamu merajalela di muka bumi membuat kerusakan.” (QS. Al-A’raaf [7]: 74)
Brian Doe, seorang peneliti arkeologi tentang keberadaan kaum Nabi Hud AS. (‘Ad) dan kaum Tsamud di Arabia Selatan menyatakan, kaum Tsamud ini dikenali melalui tulisan pahatan yang mereka buat pada dinding-dinding batu. Tulisan yang secara grafis itu sangat mirip dengan huruf Smaitic(dikenal juga dengan Thamudic) dan banyak ditemukan di Arabia Selatan sampai ke Hijaz. (Brian Doe, Southern Arabia, Thames and Hudson, 1971, hal 21-22).
Tulisan yang pertama ditemukan di daerah utara Yaman yang dikenal sebagai Tsamud, dibawa ke selatan dan Hadramaut oleh Ru’bah Khali, ke barat oleh Shabwah. Seperti halnya kaum ‘Ad, peninggalan kaum Tsamud banyak ditemukan di daerah sekitar Hadramaut, Yaman. Walaupun telah dihancurkan oleh Allah selama ribuan tahun, namun sisa-sisa peninggalan mereka berupa bangunan dan karya seni hingga kini masih dapat ditemukan di sekitar Hadramaut dan di kota Madain Saleh sebelah utara Madinah.
Madain Saleh ; Warisan Dunia
Kota bekas peninggalan umat Nabi Saleh AS, yaitu kaum Tsamud di Al-Hijr (Madain Saleh) kini menjadi salah satu kota warisan dunia. Badan PBB untuk pendidikan, ilmu pengetahuan dan kebudayaan (UNESCO), pada awal juli 2008 lalu telah mengesahkan kota tua Madain Saleh yang terletak di utara Madinah itu sebagai salah satu warisan dunia (World Heritage Site).

Kaum Tsamud dan Nabatea yang menetap di Madain Saleh adalah situs bersejarah yang memiliki 132 kamar dan kuburan. Tempat ini terletak sekitar 440 km di sebelah utara Madinah. Peninggalan yang masih bisa dilihat disini adalah ukiran dan pahatan pada tembok, menara, serta sejumlah saluran air dan bak-bak air.
Selain itu, para arkeolog juga menemukan batu bata rumah warga yang dianggap sebagai sisa peninggalan umat Nabi Saleh di Nabatea yang terpelihara baik setelah Petra dan berlokasi sekitar 440 km arah utara Madinah yang berbatasan dengan Yordania. Kota Madain Saleh menjadi situs warisan dunia yang pertama di peroleh Arab Saudi.
Tsamud ; Entrepreneur Ulung
Kaum Tsamud dikenal sebagai entrepreneur ulung di masanya. Berbagai karya seni pahat, ukiran dan pertukangan adalah contoh kemahiran dan keahlian mereka. Dalam Al-Qur’an, keahlian mereka diabadikan dala surah Al-A’raaf [7]: 74,
“Dan ingatlah olehmu di waktu Tuhan menjadikan kamu pengganti-pengganti (yang berkuasa) sesudah kaum ‘Ad dan memberikan tempat bagimu di bumi. Kamu dirikan istana-istana di tanah-tanah yang datar dan kamu pahat gunung-gunungnya untuk dijadikan rumah, maka ingatlah nikmat-nikmat Allah dan janganlah kamu merajalela di muka bumi membuat kerusakan.”(QS. Al-A’raaf [7]: 74).
Para Arkeolog berhasil menemukan sejumlah batu karang dari hasil budaya kaum Tsamud, yang terdapat di gunung-gunung dan lembah-lembah di sekitar Arabia Selatan dan Tengah. Misalnya di gunung Athlab, mereka menemukan tembikar sisa peninggalan kaum Tsamud.
Karena keahlian dan kepandaiannya itu, hasil ukiran yang dibuat kaum Tsamud dijadikan sebagai barang dagangan dengan komoditas lainnnya. Sebagian lagi dibuat hiasan di rumah-rumah mereka.
Produk utama kaum Tsamud adalah barang pecah-belah (tembikar) yang unik, dan memiliki nilai seni yang berkualitas tinggi, sedangkan produk lainnya berupa kemenyan dan rempah-rempah. Dari hasil perdagangan tersebut memberikan kekayaan, sehingga memungkinkan mereka membangun istana, rumah yang dipahat dan makam pada batu karang.
Pada sekitar 200 SM, kaum Nabatea menggantikan kaum Tsamud menguasai kota Dedan (Al-Ula) sampai Al-Hijr (Madain Saleh). Situs arkeologi penting ditemukan di kota Al-‘Ula yang telah dihuni hingga tahun 1970. Ini merupakan sebuah percontohan kota Islam yang dikenali kembali pada abad ke-11 Masehi.
Khuraibah merupakan sebuah situs Kerajaan Lihyanite, yang terdapat sejumlah besar makam. Ditemukan pula Ikmah yang merupakan sebuah sungai (wadi) pada batunya terdapat prasasti Lihyanite dan Minea. (dp/dais)
