Salah satu kisah yang menarik di dalam Al-Qur'an adalah kisah mengenai nabi Sulaiman yang mendengar perkataan semut yang memperingatkan akan kedatangan nabi Sulaiman dan tentaranya yang mendekati sarang mereka. Dikisahkan salah satu semut dalam kawanan tersebut memperingatkan kawan-kawannya untuk segera kembali ke sarang-sarang mereka agar tidak terinjak oleh tentara nabi Sulaiman. Kisah tersebut tertuang dalam dua ayat di surah An-Naml (27) ayat 18-19 yang mengatakan :
[27:18] Hingga apabila mereka sampai di lembah semut berkatalah seekor semut: Hai semut-semut, masuklah ke dalam sarang-sarangmu, agar kamu tidak diinjak oleh Sulaiman dan tentaranya, sedangkan mereka tidak menyadari";
[27:19] maka dia (Sulaiman) tersenyum dengan tertawa karena (mendengar) perkataan semut itu. Dan dia berdoa: "Ya Tuhanku, berilah aku ilham untuk tetap mensyukuri nikmat-Mu yang telah Engkau anugerahkan kepadaku dan kepada dua orang ibu bapakku dan untuk mengerjakan amal saleh yang Engkau ridai; dan masukkanlah aku dengan rahmat-Mu ke dalam golongan hamba-hamba-Mu yang saleh".
Orang yang membaca kedua ayat di atas mungkin akan bertanya, apa maksudnya Allah mengungkapkan kisah tersebut di ayat Al-Qur'an. Suatu kisah yang sepele dan tidak pernah ada di kitab-kitab sebelumnya.. Banyak yang menganggap cerita di atas hanyalah dongeng, karena yang dikatakan dapat "mendengar" perkataan sang semut hanyalah nabi Sulaiman.
Dilain pihak, Muslim percaya apa yang tertulis di dalam Al-Qur'an tidak ada yang sia-sia, sehingga mengembalikan kita pada pertanyaan "apa maksudnya Allah menceritakan kisah semut tersebut ? Apakah sekedar menceritakan sebuah dongeng ? "
An-Naml berarti "Kawanan semut (semut dalam bentuk jamak)". Dari 93 ayat yang ada di dalam surah ini, kata "semut" hanya di sebutkan di dalam satu ayat, yaitu ayat 18. Jika di ayat 19 di atas, sepertinya terlihat ada kata "semut" di sana, tapi sebenarnya "perkataan semut itu" terjemahan literalnya adalah "perkataannya (sang semut)". Nama surah ini di berikan judul "Kawanan semut", walaupun dari 93 ayat, hanya 1 ayat yang menyebutkan tentang semut. Hal ini mengindikasikan ada sesuatu yang penting tentang kisah semut yang dikisahkan dalam ayat di atas.
Ilmu pengetahuan saat ini mengungkapkan bahwa semut menggunakan komunikasi kimia dengan cara memberikan alarm atau peringatan kepada kelompoknya sehingga terjadi pertukaran informasi secara cepat. Zat-zat kimia ini dikeluarkan oleh kelenjar-kelenjar di dalam semut, di mana kebanyakan dari jenis spesies semut, zat-zat ini di hasilkan denga kadar yang berbeda-beda oleh kelenjar mandibula dan juga kelenjar racun, tergantung jenis situasi yang dihadapi. Menurut buku "Encyclopedia of Entomology" karangan John L. Capinera halaman 92, dikatakan setidaknya ada 4 jenis senyawa kimia yang dikeluarkan semut dalam berkomunikasi, dengan mengambil contoh semut African weaver :
The major workers produce a secretion from the mandibular gland comprising four active componens : hexanal, hexanol, (E)-2-butyl-2-octenal, a dimer of hexanal produced chemically by self condensation, and 3-undecanone.
Hexanal, a higly volatile component with an active space of 5-10cm (the area around a emission where the concentration is at or above required for a behavioral response), causes the ants to be alerted, making quick runs in random and changing direction with mandibles open and antennae waving.
Hexanol attracts directly to the source at a range of 1-5cm;it is repellent at very close range and also causes further excitement.
As the Hexanol disperses, 3-undercanone is attactive over this close range and, along with (E)-2-butyl-2-octenal, acts as a marker for attack and biting to hold the source occurs.
Sedangkan M.Yadav di dalam bukunya "Biology of Insects" halaman 337 ketika membicarakan mengenai komunikasi semut menyatakan bahwa :
The defensive behaviour consists of four stages. (1) alerting, in which ants raise their heads and open their jaws; (2) attraction toward the disturbance; (3) stopping near the source of the disturbance; (4) bitting and holding for several minutes
Sekarang mari kita lihat percakapan semut pada surah An-Naml (27) ayat 18 di atas, ketika salah seekor semut di antara kawanan semut itu berkata berkata :
1. "Hai para semut" : dalam tahap ini, Hexanal di keluarkan, memasuki fasa alerting dimana semut tersebut meminta perhatian semut yang lain.
2. "kembalilah ke sarangmu" : dalam tahap ini, Hexanal lebih intense dikeluarkan, menyebabkan apa yang dikatakan oleh John L. Capinera di atas, semut-semut berlari dengan cepat dan acak, serta mengubah arah.
3. "agar kamu tidak diinjak oleh Sulaiman dan tentaranya" : dalam tahap ini, Hexanol di keluarkan, mengakibatkan fasa attraction dan stopping dimulai, di mana perhatian para semut di arahkan kepada source atau sumber bahaya, dalam hal ini adalah Sulaiman dan tentaranya.
4. "sedangkan mereka tidak menyadari" : dalam tahap ini, semut-semut itu di perintahkan untuk holding, bukan bitting. 3-undercanone dan (E)-2-butyl-2-octenal dalam kadar tertentu bersama-sama menentukan jenis pertahanan apa yang harus mereka buat untuk mempertahankan diri dan sarang mereka. Dalam hal ini yang diperintahkan adalah "hold" atau tunggu. "Jangan serang, karena mereka tidak menyadari. Mereka tidak sengaja akan menginjak kita dan menyerang kita".
Empat tahapan di lalui oleh para semut tersebut dalam memberikan alarm pertahanan diri kepada kawanannya. "wahum laa yasy'uruun" atau "sedangkan mereka tidak menyadari" memainkan peranan penting dalam cerita ini, karena frasa inilah yang paling tidak penting untuk diceritakan jika diperhatikan secara sekilas. Tidakkah cukup ketika semut tersebut mengatakan "Hai semua, balik ke sarang! Sulaiman dan tentaranya datang, jangan sampai terinjak!" ?
Kenapa Allah harus menambahkan "sedangkan mereka tidak menyadari" dimana sebenarnya ada atau tidak ada frasa ini terlihat tidak begitu berpengaruh? Jawabannya, karena memang itulah yang terjadi. Frasa tersebut memang di-"ucapkan" oleh sang semut dengan mengeluarkan 3-undercanone dan (E)-2-butyl-2-octenal dalam kadar yang diketahui semut lain sebagai "tunggu, jangan serang, mereka bukan musuh yang sesungguhnya".
Bahkan dalam mengungkapkan suatu kisah yang terkesan tidak berarti, Allah memasukkan kebenaran di dalamnya. Cara yang disampaikan surah An-Naml ayat 18 di atas adalah cara yang paling jujur yang dapat diterima 15 abad yang lalu saat ayat ini diturunkan, tetapi dapat dibuktikan kebenarannya berabad-abad kemudian dengan ilmu pengetahuan, karena orang-orang 15 abad yang lalu tidak mengetahui apa itu komunikasi kimiawi, hexanal, hexanol dan sebagainya.
Satu lagi fakta menarik adalah penggunaan kata "namlatun" dalam kalimat "qallat namlatun ya-ayyuha l-namlu" (berkata seekor semut "Hai semut-semut"). "Namlatun" merupakan kata benda feminin walaupun "namlu" yang berarti kawanan semut merupakan kata benda maskulin (dalam bahasa arab, kata benda jamak yang merupakan campuran dari maskulin dan feminin seringkali dijamakkan dalam bentuk kata maskulin). Al-Qur'an mengindikasikan bahwa semut-semut pekerja di dominasi oleh semut-semut betina, karena surah Al-Naml (27) ayat 18 di atas bercerita tentang kawanan semut pekerja. Fakta ilmu pengetahuan membuktikan bahwa memang semut-semut pekerja di dominasi oleh semut betina dan semut-semut jantan bekerja di dalam sarang untuk membuahi sang ratu semut.
Di ayat selanjutnya, ayat 19, dikatakan "maka dia (Sulaiman) tersenyum dengan tertawa karena perkataannya (semut itu)". Disini Al-Qur'an dihindari dari menyebutkan kata "mendengar" karena komunikasi kimiawi semut itu memang tidak dapat di "dengar". Di terjemahan bahasa Indonesia untuk An-Naml ayat 19 ini memang ada kata mendengar akan tetapi berada di dalam kurung "(mendengar)", yang merupakan tafsiran dari penerjemahnya. Di dalam terjemahan Al-Qur'an, semua yang berada di dalam kurung merupakan tambahan atau tafsiran dari penterjemah, karena Al-Qur'an itu sendiri tidak mengenal tanda "dalam kurung".
Dan juga perhatikan penggunaan kata "masakinakum" yang di artikan "sarang-sarang (jamak) kalian", bukan "maskanakum" yang artinya "sarang (tunggal) kalian", menandakan adanya unikoloni semut. Tatiana Giraud, Jes S. Pedersen dan Laurent Kelle dalam bukunya "Evolution of supercolonies: The Argentine ants of southern Europe" mengatakan walaupun biasanya semut-semut dari sarang yang berbeda cenderung menyerang satu dengan yang lain, tetapi ada fenomena yang dinamakan unikonoli dimana semut-semut pekerja bercampur dengan bebas dengan semut-semut pekerja dari sarang lainnya. Unikoloni dalam skala besar membentuk apa yang dinamakan superkoloni.
Lihat bagaimana satu ayat singkat dalam Al-Qur'an yang sepertinya remeh memberikan begitu banyak informasi, dengan bahasa yang dapat diterima di semua jaman dan merefleksikan kekuasaan Allah, sang Pencipta.
