Ilmu pengetahuan tidak mungkin bertentangan dengan agama. Dan agama tidak mungkin bertentangan dengan ilmu pengetahuan.
Ciri keaslian dan keotentikan suatu kitab suci yang benar-benar berasal dari Tuhan adalah apa yang dijabarkan, baik tersirat apalagi yang tersurat tidak boleh bertentangan dengan Ilmu Pasti Alam, kerana kedua-duanya diturunkan dari Tuhan.
Itulah yang selalu ditekankan Islam melalui Al-Qur'an sebagai kitab suci. Di berbagai ayat, banyak perintah untuk memperhatikan dan berfikir mengenai berbagai fenomena yang terjadi. Bahkan dikatakan juga bahwa tanda-tanda Allah di alam ini ditujukan bagi orang yang berfikir. Menarik untuk dicermati bahwa tanda-tanda itu adalah untuk orang yang berfikir, bukan untuk orang yang beriman (saja). Dengan memikirkan fenomena alam sekitar maka akan semakin yakin seseorang akan keberadaan Pencipta dan akhirnya mampu memilih agama yang benar yang membawa kebenaran.
Salah satu ayat yang menarik adalah surah Al-Waaqi'ah (56) ayat 71-72, yang terjemahannya adalah sebagai berikut :
[56:71-72] Tidakkah kamu perhatikan api yang kamu nyalakan. Kamukah yang menjadikan pohon itu (syajarataha) atau Kami-kah yang menjadikannya?
Disini sekali lagi pemilihan kata di dalam Al-Qur'an membuktikan bahwa Qur'an adalah memang benar diturunkan dan berasal dari Allah. Surah 56 ayat 72 menggunakan kata "syajarataha" yang artinya "pohon itu" (di banyak terjemahan bahasa Indonesia mengartikannya sebagai "kayu itu"). Kayu sendiri dalam bahasa arab adalah "khusyub", seperti yang digunakan di surah Al-Munafiqun (63) ayat 4 :
[63:4] ... Mereka adalah seakan-akan kayu (khusyubun) yang tersandar ...
Menarik untuk diperhatikan bahwa Allah menggunakan kata "pohon itu" (syajarataha), bukannya "kayu itu" (khusyubuha) dalam kaitannya dengan penyalaan api. 15 abad yang lalu ketika ayat ini diturunkan, bahkan masih ada sampai sekarang, dalam menyalakan api, manusia menggunakan potongan-potongan kayu dan menggosok-gosokkan potongan kayu tersebut. Sepertinya tidak ada yang menggunakan "pohon" untuk menghasilkan api untuk keperluan sehari-harinya. Akan tetapi Qur'an memakai kata "pohon" dan bukannya "kayu" untuk menjelaskan mengenai api.
Satu sifat api adalah agar dapat bertahan, ia memerlukan oksigen. Tanpa oksigen, api akan segera padam, kerana tidak akan dapat melakukan reaksi kimia yang mana memerlukan oksigen. Seperti yang kita ketahui, pohon melakukan fotosintesis yang mana mengubah karbondioksida dan air menjadi glukosa dan oksigen.
Oksigen ini akan dilepaskan oleh pohon sebagai hasil tambahan dari fotosintesis. Dengan oksigen inilah sehingga manusia dapat menyalakan api. Oleh kerana itu setelah Allah melalui Al-Qur'an menyatakan "Tidakkah kamu perhatikan api yang kamu nyalakan?" Allah langsung bertanya " Apakah kamu yang menjadikan pohon itu ataukah Kami yang menjadikannya?" Kerana tanpa pohon, tidak akan ada oksigen dan tanpa oksigen tidak akan ada api.
Jadi, fakta yang baru ditemukan pertengahan abad ke 18 (mengenai fotosintesis) telah di jelaskan oleh Al-Qur'an 15 abad yang lalu. Tentu saja, 15 abad yang lalu mungkin tidak ada yang menyedari maksud sebenarnya dari ayat ini, kerana istilah oksigen dan fotosintesis sama sekali belum dikenal pada masa itu, terfikirkan pun mungkin saja tidak, sehingga "syajarataha" dalam ayat ini ditafsirkan oleh para ahli tafsir terdahulu sama dengan "khusubuha"
dimana dalam membuat api, orang menggosok-gosokkan kayu atau menggunakan kayu sebagai bahan bakar.
Lebih dalam lagi, Al-Qur'an menjelaskan hal yang sama dengan narasi yang berbeda di ayat-ayat yang lain :
[36:80] yaitu Tuhan yang menjadikan untukmu api dari pohon yang hijau (as-syajari al-akhdhari), maka tiba-tiba kamu nyalakan daripadanya"
[6:99] dan Dialah yang menurunkan air dari langit, lalu kami tumbuhkan dengan itu segala macam tumbuh-tumbuhan, maka Kami hasilkan dari itu "sesuatu yang hijau" (khadiran), Kami keluarkan dari itu butir yang banyak ...
Di dua ayat diatas, dimunculkan kata "akhdar" yang berarti hijau dalam kaitannya dengan pohon (syajara) dan tumbuh-tumbuhan (nabaata). Pada surah ke Yaasiin (36), lebih spesifik lagi dikatakan api dijadikan dari "pohon yang (memiliki) hijau" (as-syajari al-akhdari), kerana hanya pohon yang memiliki zat hijau daun atau yang dikenal sebagai klorofil yang dapat melakukan fotosintesis dan menghasilkan oksigen. Klorofil adalah zat yang berperanan untuk mengubah cahaya matahari menjadi energi yang diperlukan tumbuhan untuk mengubah karbondioksida dan air menjadi glukosa serta menghasilkan oksigen. Tanpa klorofil, tumbuhan-tumbuhan tidak akan dapat melakukan fotosintesis yang tentu saja tidak akan dapat menghasilkan oksigen sehingga api pun tidak akan dapat dinyalakan.
Di surah Al-An'aam (6) ayat ke 99 Allah melalui Quran menyatakan " fa-akhrajna (lalu Kami keluarkan/hasilkan/adakan) min'hu (darinya) khadiran (sesuatu yang hijau)". Selanjutnya dikatakan bahwa sang "khadiran" atau "sesuatu yang hijau" atau istilah populernya "klorofil" tersebut mampu menghasilkan bagi tumbuh-tumbuhan butir yang banyak, kerana dengan adanya klorofil maka proses fotosintesis dapat berjalan sehingga menghasilkan makanan yang diperlukan bagi tumbuh-tumbuhan untuk menghasilkan buah.
Jika di surah 36 dan 56 di atas Allah menggunakan kata "syajara" atau "pohon" dalam kaitannya dengan api, maka dalam menjelaskan "sesuatu yang hijau" atau khadiran di surah 6, dimana tidak disebut-sebutkan kaitannya dengan api, Allah memasangkannya dengan kata "nabata" atau "tumbuh-tumbuhan". Hal ini kerana jika terkait dengan api, "syajara" atau "pohon" selain menghasilkan oksigen, juga memiliki kayu yang juga diperlukan dalam membuat api sebagai bahan bakarnya.
Masih di surah Al-An'aam (6) ayat ke 99, di akhir ayatnya Allah berkata :
[6:99] ... Perhatikanlah buahnya di waktu pohonnya berbuah, dan (perhatikan pulalah) kematangannya. Sesungguhnya pada yang demikian itu ada tanda-tanda (kekuasaan Allah) bagi orang-orang yang beriman.
Di sini Allah secara spesifik menekankan kita untuk memperhatikan keadaan buah dan sekitarnya, mulai ketika buah tersebut masih muda sampai menjadi matang, bagaimana keadaan daun-daun di sekitar buah tersebut, sampai akhirnya pohon tersebut akhirnya tidak menghasilkan buah lagi. Dari daun yang awal mulanya berwarna hijau menjadi mulai memudar dan menjadi berwarna kuning (disebagian jenis pohon), akibat sel-sel hijau daunnya telah mati.
Demikianlah Allah menunjukkan tanda-tandanya kepada manusia, sebagaimana yang difirmankan-Nya dalam surah Fushshilat (41) ayat 53 :
[41:53] Kami akan memperlihatkan kepada mereka tanda-tanda Kami di segenap ufuk dan pada diri mereka sendiri, sehingga jelaslah bagi mereka bahwa Al Quran itu adalah benar. Dan apakah Tuhanmu tidak cukup (bagi kamu) bahwa sesungguhnya Dia menyaksikan segala sesuatu?
