Setelah perang dunia pertama berakhir dan Jerman kalah dalam perang.
Jepang pun akhirnya menjadi salah satu anggota Liga Bangsa-bangsa dan dikuasai oleh Jerman berdasarkan mandate Nanyang.
Di bawah mandate Nanyang baru ini, banyak perusahaan swasta asing yang masuk ke wilayah Nanyang.
Akibatnya banyak dari mereka tidak tahu bahwa menanam investasi di sana akan mengalami kerugian sehingga akhirnya menimbulkan kerusuhan yang cukup besar.
Tahun 1939, Kazuko Higa pun akhirnya memutuskan untuk pindah dari Okinawa ke pulau Saiban untuk menemui kakaknya yang berada di Nanyang
Setelah itu, dia pun pindah lagi ke pulau Barkandan menjadi pelayan di sebuah café dan disinilah dia berkenalan dengan seorang pria muda yang akhirnya menikah dengannya pada usia 18 tahun.
Suami Kazuko merupakan seorang supervisor di Nanyang dan dia bertugas untuk mengamati ladang kelapa di pulau itu.
Kemudian pada tahun 1944, dia dan Kazuko Higa pun dipindahkan ke sebuah pulau bernama Anatahan, sebuah pulau gunung berapi yang merupakan bagian utara dari pulau Mariana dengan penduduk sebanyak 20 orang aborigin.
Pada tahun 1944, mereka berdua dipindahtugaskan ke pulau tersebut bersama dengan boss suami Kazuko.
Namun setelah beberapa waktu, pulau tersebut tiba-tiba diserang dengan menggunakan pesawat tempur.
Suami Kazuko tiba-tiba hilang tanpa jejak dan tak pernah kembali lagi.
Setelah serangan yang membuat pulau tersebut mengalami kehancuran yang cukup parah.
Kazuko dan boss suaminya pun akhirnya memutuskan untuk hidup bersama sebagai pasutri.
Pada 12 Juni 1944, perahu nelayan Bonito diserang oleh tentara Amerika dan banyak melarikan diri dari sana dengan cara berenang ke pulau Anatahan.
Terhitung ada 10 tentara angkatan laut dan 21 tentara lainnya, sehingga total 31 orang tiba-tiba masuk ke pulau Anatahan dan tinggal bersama dengan Kazuko Higa.
Pada 15 Agustus 1945, tentara Amerika memberikan berita mereka akan dibebaskan darisana.
Tetapi sayangnya ke 33 orang ini tidak percaya pada berita yang disampaikan oleh tentara Amerika ini sementara orang aborigin pulau itu berangsur-angsur pulang kembali ke tanah Jepang.
Ke-33 orang yang bertahan di pulau ini pun akhirnya melakukan pelatihan militer sendiri dan memburu makanan mereka di hutan-hutan untuk dapat tetap bertahan hidup.
Pada Agustus 1946, mereka menemukan adanya rongsokan mobil perang Amerika B29 yang tertinggal di sana dan menemukan adanya 4 buah pistol serta bom.
Setelah diperbaiki, akhirnya hanya ada dua pistol yang bisa digunakan dan inilah yang menjadi senjata mereka satu-satunya.
Dari sinilah tragedi yang mengerikan tersebut dimulai.
Siapapun yang memiliki pistol tersebut, dialah yang berhak memiliki Kazuko.
Hal inilah yang menyebabkan mereka akhirnya saling membunuh satu sama lain.
Bahkan ada beberapa di antara mereka yang hilang secara misterius dan tidak ditemukan kembali.
Kazuko yang mengetahui fakta mengerikan ini akhirnya meminta pertolongan pada tentara Amerika untuk membawanya keluar dari pulau itu satu bulan setelahnya.
Kazuko pun akhirnya menceritakan segala hal yang terjadi pada dirinya selama dia berada di pulau tersebut kepada keluarganya.
Keluarganya juga mengungkapkan bahwa dulunya mereka pernah menerima surat dari tentara Amerika.
Tetapi mereka tidak mempercayainya karena mereka takut mereka masuk ke dalam perangkapnya.
Setahun setelah Kazuko meninggalkan pulau tersebut, pria terakhir yang berada di pulau tersebut pun akhirnya mengaku menyerah pada 6 Desember 1951 dan kembali ke Jepang.
Ternyata, suami pertama Kazuko sudah pulang ke Jepang dari awal dan dia bahkan telah mempunyai keluarga yang baru.
Awalnya dia mengira Kazuko telah meninggal di pulau tersebut sehingga dia pun meninggalkan pulau tersebut.
Ketika Kazuko ditanya apa yang terjadi dengan ke 32 pria yang bersamanya di pulau tersebut.
Dia tidak berniat menceritakannya, tetapi akhirnya dia pun dengan jujur mengungkapkan kebenaran pahit yang terjadi disana.
Berita ini akhirnya tersebar dengan cepat di Jepang hingga ada yang membuat ceritanya ini menjadi film dokumentari bertajuk "Anatahan Island."
Ada juga film garapan Jepang yang terfokus pada Kazuko sebagai pemeran utama yaitu "Inilah Kebenaran Pulau Anatahan," dan film ini bahkan mendapatkan penghargaan dari Hollywood.
Setelah semua hal yang dialaminya di pulau terpencil itu dan kembali ke Jepang, Kazuko pun akhirnya menikah lagi pada usia 31 tahun dan membuka sebuah toko kecil disana.
Namun sayangnya, hari-hari bahagianya tak berlangsung lama karena suaminya akhirnya meninggal dunia setelah 4 tahun menikah dengannya.
Bulan Maret 1974, Kazuko mengalami tumor otak yang akhirnya membuatnya meninggalkan dunia ini untuk selamanya.
