Paling enak memang jika saat cuaca panas minum minuman berkarbonasi atau yang lebih dikenal dengan sebutan soft drink. Soft drink merupakan minuman (seringnya berkarbonasi) yang biasanya mengandung pemanis dan flavor. Indonesia dengan iklim tropisnya dan masyarakat yang mudah diajak kearah konsumtif dilihat oleh para pelaku bisnis soft drink sebagai “lahan” subur bisnisnya. Bisa dikatakan, masyarakat indonesia sangat gampang terbujuk oleh iklan yang sangat persuasif melalui media elektronik maupun cetak. Semakin banyak konsumen yang membeli semakin berjaya perusahaan minuman tersebut.
Namun, di balik segarnya soft drink yang sering kita minum tersimpan setidaknya empat “monster” yang berpotensi menimbulkan bahaya terutama dalam hal kesehatan. Monster tersebut adalah:
1. Monster Fosfor
Perlu diketahui, sebagian besar soft drink mengandung fosfor dalam jumlah yang tinggi. Kandungan fosfor ini dapat mengganggu keseimbangan mineral dalam tubuh. Di dalam tubuh, perbandingan antara fosfor dan kalsium berkisar 1:1. Jika kita mengkonsumsi 1 g fosfor sebaiknya juga mengkonsumsi 1 g kalsium. Jika terlalu banyak asupan fosfor tanpa diikuti dengan asupan kalsium maka tubuh akan membuang kelebihan fosfor tersebut melalui urin dengan mengikatkan fosfor dengan kalsium. Nah, karena asupan kalsium tubuh kurang, maka tubuh mengambil kalsium dari jaringan tulang guna membuang kelebihan fosfor ini. Dapat dibanyangkan jika hal ini sering terjadi pada tubuh kita, lama-lama tulang kita bisa keropos.
2. Monster Gula
Sebuah penelitian di US terhadap 50.000 responden menyatakan bahwa mereka yang minum minuman bersoda perhari mengalami kenaikan berat badan lebih cepat dibandingkan dengan mereka yang tidak meminumnya. Mereka yang meminumnya juga mengalami kenaikan risiko menderita diabetes tipe 2 sebanyak 80%. Tingginya risiko ini disebabkan oleh kandungan gula yang tinggi pada sebagian besar minuman bersoda atau soft drink.
Penelitian yang dilakukan oleh Harvard School of Public Health menyatakan bahwa konsumsi gula yang tinggi dapat meningkatkan risiko kanker payudara dan beberapa “efek” lainnya seperti diabetes, obesitas, dan ADHD (attention deficit hyperactive disorder). WHO juga menyarankan untuk mengurangi asupan gula untuk mencegah obesitas dan diabetes.
3. Monster Aspartam
Untuk menghindari asupan gula yang tinggi dari kunsumsi soft drink, beberapa orang berpindah haluan dengan mengkonsumsi soft drink yang rendah kandungan gulanya. Namun, seperti keluar mulut harimau masuk mulut buaya, beberapa produsen soft drink menggantikan gula dengan pemanis buatan seperti aspartam. Pemanis buatan ini diindikasikan sebagai pemanis buatan yang paling banyak digunakan untuk membuat soft drink rendah kalori atau rendah gula.

Fakta-fakta inilah yang mendorong Food and Drug Administration (FDA) mengatur penggunaan aspartam pada minuman. Namun, tak jarang produsen minuman masih menggunakannya dengan alasan tertentu salah satunya ekonomis karena tingkat kemanisan aspartam 200 kali kemanisan gula. WHO menetapkan konsumsi aspartam sebaiknya tidak lebih dari 40 mg/kg berat tubuh perhari.
