Sirius adalah bintang paling terang dilangit malam apabila dilihat dari bumi. Terletak di rasi bintang Canis Major dan merupakan sebuah tata surya yang hanya memiliki dua bintang saja (bintang kembar), yaitu Sirius A dan Sirius B.
Bintang Sirius A dapat dilihat hampir disemua permukaan bumi dan saat terbaik untuk melihat bintang ini adalah pada tanggal 1 Januari dimana tepat berada di atas langit pada pukul dua belas malam. Berbeda dengan pasangannya, Sirius B sangatlah redup sehingga tidak dapat dilihat dengan mata telanjang meskipun dalam kondisi langit yang cerah di malam hari.
Dalam sejarahnya nama bintang ini memiliki beberapa nama seperti dalam bahasa Yunani disebut Σείριος (Seirios, yang berarti "menyala-nyala" atau "amat panas"), dalam bahasa Latin disebut Canicula ("anjing kecil") dan dalam bahasa Arab disebut aš-šyi‘rā (الشعرى) dalam astronomi Islam, dimana nama alternatif Al Shira diturunkan .

Hal yang menarik untuk dikaji adalah bintang Sirius atau Syi’ra merupakan satu-satunya nama bintang selain matahari yang disebutkan dalam Al Quran pada surat An Najm.
dan bahwasanya Dialah yang Tuhan (yang memiliki) bintang syi'ra.
(QS. An Najm, 49)
Namun ada yang menarik pada ayat sebelumnya di surat yang sama, yaitu sebagai berikut:
maka jadilah dia dekat dua ujung busur panah atau lebih dekat (lagi).
(QS. An Najm, 9)
Pada pemaparan sebelumnya telah disinggung bahwa bintang Sirius merupakan bintang yang mengorbit satu sama lain dengan membentuk dua busur panah. Perhatikanlah ayat Al Quran diatas, sangatlah cocok seperti apa yang di jelaskan dalam Al Quran yaitu membentuk dua ujung busur panah.
Kajaiban yang lainnya ialah lama edar orbit kedua bintang ini. Kedua bintang ini mengelilingi satu sama lain melintasi satu siklus orbit yang membentuk busur ganda setiap 49,9 tahun.
Perhatikanlah kedua ayat Al Quran yang berhubungan dengan bintang Syi'ra berikut:
dan bahwasanya Dialah Tuhan (yang memiliki) bintang Syi'ra
(QS. An Najm, 49)
maka jadilah dia dekat dua ujung busur panah atau lebih dekat (lagi).

Gabungkanlah kedua ayat diatas, yaitu ayat 49 dan ayat 9 dengan ditambahkan koma diantara angka tersebut, maka akan membentuk angka 49,9. Sama seperti lama peredaran bintang ini satu sama lain, yaitu 49,9 tahun.
Subhanallah, Maha Benar Allah Atas Segala Firman-Nya.
Bintang Sirius Adalah Saksi Miraj Nabi Muhammad saw
Saksi mata sangat dibutuhkan untuk membenarkan sebuah perkara. Di pengadilan misalnya, kesaksian yang didukung saksi mata, akan lebih diterima Hakim dibanding kesaksian tanpa saksi mata. Bahkan seseorang yang dianggap benar, tapi tidak dapat mengajukan saksi mata, di pengadilan dapat menjadi pihak yang kalah.
Dalam Islam seluruh manusia akan dipertanggungjawabkan amal perbuatannya di akhirat kelak, Allah akan menjadikan lidah, tangan dan kaki sebagai saksi terhadap segala sesuatu yang dikerjakan di dunia. Sebagaimana Firman Allah swt :
“Pada hari (ketika) lidah, tangan, dan kaki mereka menjadi saksi atas mereka terhadap apa yang dahulu mereka kerjakan. Di hari itu, Allah akan memberi mereka balasan yang setimpal menurut semestinya, dan tahulah mereka bahwa Allah-lah yang benar lagi yang menjelaskan (segala sesuatu menurut hakikat yang sebenarnya).” (Qs. An-Nur: 24-25)
Dalam Islam, saksi bukan hanya makhluk hidup tetapi apa yang kita anggap sebagai benda mati pun akan dimintai sebagai saksi oleh Allah swt sehingga nanti manusia tidak bisa mengelak jika berdusta. Disinlah Allah menjadikan bintang Sirius sebagai argumentasi dan saksi kebenaran Miraj Nabi Muhammad saw, selain itu surat An Najm (berarti Bintang) jika dibaca ayat per ayat merupakan kronologis perjalan Miraj Nabi ke Sidratul Muntaha (tempat tertinggi di langit).
“Sedang Dia berada di ufuk yang tinggi. Kemudian Dia mendekat, lalu bertambah dekat lagi.
Maka jadilah Dia dekat (pada Muhammad sejarak) dua ujung busur panah atau lebih dekat (lagi). Lalu Dia menyampaikan kepada hamba-Nya (Muhammad) apa yang telah Allah wahyukan. Hatinya tidak mendustakan apa yang telah dilihatnya. Maka apakah kaum (musyrik Mekah) hendak membantahnya tentang apa yang telah dilihatnya? Dan sesungguhnya Muhammad telah melihat Jibril itu (dalam rupanya yang asli) pada waktu yang lain. (yaitu) di Sidrat al-Muntaha. Di dekatnya ada surga tempat tinggal. (Muhammad melihat Jibril) ketika Sidrat al-Muntaha diliputi oleh sesuatu yang meliputinya. Penglihatannya (Muhammad) tidak berpaling dari yang dilihatnya itu dan tidak (pula) melampauinya. Sesungguhnya Dia telah melihat sebahagian tanda-tanda (kekuasaan) Tuhannya yang paling besar.”
(QS al-Najm [53]: 7-18)
Dalam kasus Bintang Sirius sebagai saksi kebenaran Miraj Nabi sudah jelas bahwa tempat pertemuan Nabi Muhammad saw di langit dengan malaikat Jibril adalah pada sejarak dua ujung busur panah (bintang Sirius), dengan begitu bagi siapapun yang tidak percaya akan Isra Miraj Nabi Muhammad saw mereka adalah orang yang berdusta. Disinlah keajaiban Al Quran tentang bintang Sirius, Allah menerangkan orbit bintang Sirius padahal 1400 tahun yang lalu tidak ada yang mengetahui bahwa orbit bintang ini berbentuk dua ujung busur panah setiap 49,9 tahun, tetapi Al Quran sudah menggunakannya dengan bahasa sains modern yang sangat mudah dipahami.
