Setelah pesta ulang tahun Alison usai, Mirranda berlari ke ruang tamu, dan saat itu ia langsung tidak bersuara lagi. Itu adalah saat- saat terakhir sebelum Mirranda jatuh ke lantai dan pingsan. Orangtuanya langsung mengecek mulutnya, tapi mereka tidak menemukan apapun. Mereka sudah melakukan CPR dan memanggil ambulans, tapi jantung Mirranda sudah berhenti berdetak…
Setelah diperiksa, tidak ada benda besar apapun didalam mulutnya, kecuali sebuah serpihan popcorn kecil yang tersangkut pada saluran pernafasannya dan membuatnya tidak bisa bernafas.
Sesampainya di UGD, Mirranda langsung dipasangi alat bantu pernafasan. Namun setelah menjalani pemeriksaan lebih lanjut, dokter malah mengatakan otak Mirranda sudah mati.
Pihak rumah sakit sudah menyarankan orangtuanya untuk melepaskan alat bantu pernafasan, namun orangtuanya masih mengelak. Mereka masih berharap Mirranda dapat kembali bernafas.
Masalah perdebatan orangtua dan pihak rumah sakit akhirnya sampai dibawa ke pengadilan. Orangtua Mirranda menuntut pihak rumah sakit tidak mau bekerja maksimal untuk menyelamatkan putri kecil mereka. Permasalahan ini berlangsung lama di pengadilan, saat orangtua sibuk mengurusi hal- hal ini, Mirranda kecil pun tetap berbaring tak berdaya di rumah sakit..
Namun, pada bulan November lalu, seluruh organ Mirranda sudah dinyatakan tidak berfungsi lagi dan resmi dinyatakan meninggal dunia.
Keluarga Mirranda hanya bisa merelakan kepergian buah hati kecilnya dengan kepedihan hati. Kini pihak keluarga Mirranda pun sangat sensitif dengan bahaya ‘tersedak’ dan mewanti- wanti orangtua lain untuk memperhatikan hal yang selalu dianggap sepele ini.
Ingatlah, tersedak bukanlah suatu hal sepele, tersedak benda kecil saja, bisa- bisa membuat nyawa buah hatimu melayang!
Berikut adalah beberapa cara untuk menghindari anak kecil tersedak:
1. Jauhkan benda berukuran kecil dari anak- anak
2. Pastikan anakmu duduk diam saat makan. Bergerak berlebihan ketika anak- anak makan dapat membuat mereka lebih mudah tersedak.
3. Jangan biarkan anakmu makan saat berada dalam kendaraan yang sedang melaju.
4. Kamu harus lebih memperhatikan anakmu saat mereka sedang flu, karena makanan dapat lebih mudah tersangkut pada tenggorokan saat mereka sedang tidak sehat.
Kalau anakmu tersedak, gunakan cara “lima dan lima” seperti yang diuraikan dibawah ini:

Lima Pukulan belakang:
1. Tundukkan badan anakmu, posisi kepala harus lebih rendah dari badan.
Untuk bayi, gendong bayi secara terbalik, tempelkan perut bayi di lenganmu dan tahan dagunya dengan telapak tangan.
2. Berikan lima pukulan (jangan terlalu keras dan jangan terlalu lembut) pada punggu bayi sampai makanan yang tersedak terdorong keluar.
Lima Dorongan depan:
1. Baringkan anakmu dengan posisi kepala lebih rendah dari badan.
2. Gunakan dua jari (telunjuk dan jari tengah) untuk menggosok bagian dada.
3. Dorong jarimu kedepan sampai lima kali.
Kamu bisa melakukan kedua cara ini sampai makanan yang tersangkut terdorong keluar.
