Stupa utama yang menjadi mahkota Candi Borobudur memiliki ruang berongga. Saat pertama kali dibuka setelah monumen tersebut direstorasi, dikabarkan The Unfinished Buddha ditemukan di dalamnya.
“Ketika dibuka untuk restorasi, di dalam stupa itu konon ditemukan sebuah patung Budha yang belum selesai pengerjaannya. Mengenai hal ini, ada beberapa versi,” kata Kepala Balai Konservasi Peninggalan Borobudur (BPKB), Maris Sutopo kepada Liputan6.com, Selasa (30/5/2017).
Arkeolog berpendapat, patung Buddha itu ditinggalkan di tengah pengerjaannya karena dianggap cacat dan tidak rata. Jadi, alih-alih melakukan tindakan yang ekstrem dengan menghancurkan benda yang sakral itu, pemahat mungkin telah meletakkannya di dalam stupa hanya untuk menyingkirkannya.

Pengawas untuk salah satu proyek restorasi pertama Borobudur dan orang yang menemukan patung itu adalah Theodor Van Erp. Selama proses restorasi dari tahun 1907 sampai 1911, ia menemukan The Unfinished Buddha tidak berada di stupa utama namun terkubur dalam lumpur di dalamnya.
“Ketika dibuka untuk restorasi, di dalam stupa itu konon ditemukan sebuah patung Budha yang belum selesai pengerjaannya. Mengenai hal ini, ada beberapa versi,” kata Kepala Balai Konservasi Peninggalan Borobudur (BPKB), Maris Sutopo kepada Liputan6.com, Selasa (30/5/2017).
Arkeolog berpendapat, patung Buddha itu ditinggalkan di tengah pengerjaannya karena dianggap cacat dan tidak rata. Jadi, alih-alih melakukan tindakan yang ekstrem dengan menghancurkan benda yang sakral itu, pemahat mungkin telah meletakkannya di dalam stupa hanya untuk menyingkirkannya.

Mereka mengatakan bahwa The Unfinished Buddha dibawa dari tempat lain dan tidak dimaksudkan untuk ditempatkan di dalam stupa utama.
Sejumlah sejarawan mengemukakan sebuah teori yang menyebut bahwa ruang di dalam stupa memang dibuat kosong. Hal tersebut menjelaskan tentang desain yang melambangkan bentuk sempurna Sang Buddha melalui konsep Sunyata atau ‘ketiadaan’.
Meski demikian, lokasi asli dari The Unfinished Buddha hingga kini masih diperdebatkan.

Ruang restorasi berisi peta dan gambar restorasi candi dan menggambarkan bagaimana blok batu saling bertautan, dan juga menampilkan beberapa artefak Hindu hasil ekskavasi. Sementara itu ruang Karmawibhangga memiliki 160 relief Karmawibhangga yang dipajang di kaki candi Borobudur.
Selain itu, museum yang terletak di dalam Taman Arkeologi Borobudur tersebut juga memiliki kerangka kerja arsitektur Candi Borobudur secara terperinci. Museum Karmawibhangga juga memiliki dokumen proyek restorasi yang dilakukan UNESCO pada tahun 1970-an.
