Kisah Dr. Gary Miller (Misionaris Kristen), Sang Penantang Al Quran: “Melakukan Riset Panjang Untuk Mencari Kesalahan Al Qur’an !”. DR. Gary Miller, adalah seorang ilmuwan matematika asal Kanada.

Selain menjadi anggota dewan ahli di universitas, Miller juga aktif sebagai misionaris Kristen. Miller adalah ilmuwan yang sangat meminati bidang logika dan hal-hal logis.

Pada awalnya, dia berpikir bahwa Al-Qur’an yang turun 14 abad yang lalu itu hanya membahas berbagai masalah di masa lalu.

Namun seiring dengan menguatnya arus Islam di Barat, Miller pun terdorong untuk mempelajari Al-Quran lebih mendalam dengan tujuan mencari celah-celah kesalahannya, sekaligus membuktikan ketidakotentikan kitab suci umat Muslim itu.

Miller mengatakan, “Mulai hari itu, saya membaca Al-Quran untuk mencari celah-celah kesalahan kitab ini. Melalui usaha ini, saya berharap dapat mengangkat derajat pemeluk agama Kristen di hadapan ummat Islam.”

Dikatakannya pula, “Karena Al-Quran diturunkan 14 Abad yang lalu di padang pasir, saya berpikir bahwa kitab ini sangat terbelakang serta dipenuhi dengan kekurangan. Namun semakin saya membaca Al-Quran, saya malah semakin menemukan kebenaran yang membuat saya terkesima. Saya menyadari bahwa Al-Quran ternyata membahas berbagai masalah yang sama sekali tak ditemukan di kitab samawi lainnya.

Kitab ini membuat saya semakin penasaran untuk mempelajari lebih mendalam lagi. Ketika membaca surat An-Nisa’ ayat 82, saya sangat terkejut. Ayat tersebut menyebutkan;

“Maka apakah mereka tidak memperhatikan Al-Quran? Kalau kiranya Al-Quran itu bukan dari sisi Allah, tentulah mereka mendapat pertentangan yang banyak di dalamnya.”

Tentunya, hal yang dialami oleh cendekiawan asal Kanada ini bukanlah yang pertama kali terjadi bagi seorang non-muslim. Al-Quran adalah samudera yang tak ada batasnya dan mengandung mutiara ilmu yang tak ada habis-habisnya untuk digali.

Sejak 14 abad lalu, para pemikir dan cendikiawan dalam berbagai bidang mengarungi lautan ilmu yang tertuang dalam kitab ini. Namun sedemikian luas dan dalamnya samudera Al Quran, membuat mereka belum mampu menemukan tepi atau akhir dari lautan ilmu ini.

Oleh karena itu, mereka hanya bisa pasrah sambil memuji keagungan dan kebesaran Allah Swt. Al-Quran dalam surat Furqon ayat 1 menyebutkan: “Maha Suci Allah yang telah menurunkan Al-Furqaan (Al-Quran) kepada hamba-Nya, agar dia menjadi pemberi peringatan kepada seluruh alam.”

Sebagai seorang ilmuwan, Dr. Gary Miller memahami bahwa mengenali dan membandingkan berbagai pendapat adalah salah satu metode ilmiah dalam rangka membuktikan kebenaran.

Dia juga mengatakan, “Al-Quran dengan ayat-ayat yang sangat lugas mengajak manusia untuk berpikir. Di dunia ini, tak ada seorang penulis pun yang menulis sebuah buku, kemudian dengan penuh keyakinan meminta semua pihak untuk membuktikan kesalahan-kesalahannya.”

Dr. Miller juga mengatakan, “Di saat mempelajari Al-Quran, saya menanti ayat yang menyinggung peristiwa-peristiwa yang dialami oleh Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam, seperti wafatnya Sayidah Khadijah atau kehidupan anak-anaknya. Namun, saya malah dikejutkan oleh surat yang bernama Maryam. Sedangkan dalam kitab Injil dan Taurat, tak ada satupun surat khusus dengan nama Maryam. Selain itu, Al-Quran menyebut nama Isa Al-Masih sebanyak 25 kali, sedangkan kitab ini hanya menyebut nama Rasulullah Muhammmad Shallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam sebanyak 5 kali. Bahkan, tak ada surat yang menyebutkan nama putri atau istri Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam.”

Namun, cendekiawan Barat ini masih belum mantap dengan apa yang didapatkannya. Ia pun kembali melanjutkan mencari kesalahan-kesalahan Al-Quran. Kali ini, ia dikejutkan oleh ayat lainnya, yaitu Surat al-Anbiya ayat 30, yang berbunyi:

أَوَلَمْ يَرَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا أَنَّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ كَانَتَا رَتْقًا فَفَتَقْنَاهُمَا ۖ وَجَعَلْنَا مِنَ الْمَاءِ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ حَيٍّ ۖ أَفَلَا يُؤْمِنُونَ

“Dan apakah orang-orang kafir tidak mengetahui bahwa langit dan bumi keduanya dahulunya menyatu, kemudian Kami pisahkan antara keduanya; dan Kami jadikan segala sesuatu yang hidup berasal dari air; maka mengapa mereka tidak beriman?” (QS. al-Anbiya’ : 30)

Miller berkata, “Ayat ini menyinggung masalah ilmiah yang penemunya mendapatkan penghargaan Nobel pada tahun 1973. Ayat ini menjelaskan teori “Big Bang” yang menghasilkan penciptaan dunia, langit, dan bintang-bintang.”

Miller melanjutkan, “Bagian akhir ayat tersebut menyebutkan bahwa air adalah sumber kehidupan. Ini merupakan salah satu keajaiban penciptaan alam yang baru dipahami oleh sains modern. Ilmuwan modern membuktikan bahwa sel hidup terbentuk dari sitoplasma atau zat separuh cairan lekat, sedangkan bagian inti sitoplasma bersumber dari air. Dengan mempelajari ayat ini, saya sama sekali tidak lagi mempercayai klaim-klaim bohong yang menyebut Al-Quran sebagai buatan Muhammmad Shallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam semata. Bagaimana mungkin Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam yang tak bisa menulis dan membaca sebelum diturunkannya Al-Quran, 1400 tahun yang lalu, tiba-tiba dapat berbicara soal materi dan gas yang membentuk dunia?”

Akhirnya, riset panjang ini menyebabkan Dr. Gary Miller tunduk menerima Islam sebagai agama yang benar. Dia kini aktif menulis berbagai makalah terkait mukjizat-mukjizat sains yang tercantum dalam Al-Quran.

Di antara karya-karya Miller berjudul “Al-Qur’an Yang Menakjubkan”, “Perbedaan Al-Quran dan Kitab Injil”, dan “Pandangan Islam tentang Metode-Metode Pemberian Kabar Gembira”.

Di samping berbicara mengenai mukjizat dan keagungan Al-Quran, Dr. Gary Miller juga membahas masalah lainnya. Dia mengatakan, “Di antara mukjizat Al Quran adalah menyampaikan ancaman-ancaman untuk manusia di masa mendatang yang tak bisa diprediksikan oleh manusia. Hal ini tak bisa diprediksi oleh manusia karena manusia seringkali menjadikan eksperimen sebagai tolak ukur kebenaran.

Al-Qur’an juga mengidentifikasi sahabat dan musuh ummat Islam. Selain itu, kitab ini juga memperingatkan persahabatan dengan orang-orang musyrik dan mengingatkan bahwa ummat kristiani adalah sahabat yang paling dekat dengan umat Islam. Lebih dari itu, Al Quran mengemukakan data yang konkrit dan ini adalah di antara metode Al-Quran yang luar biasa.”

Menurut Miller, “Al-Quran juga menarik perhatian para pembacanya pada hal-hal yang spesifik, bahkan kitab ini juga menyampaikan informasi-informasi baru. Informasi semacam ini tak pernah disinggung dalam kitab samawi lainnya. Sebagai contoh, surat Al-Imran ayat 44 menyampaikan peristiwa undian untuk mengasuh Sayidah Maryam as. Ayat tersebut menyebutkan, “Yang demikian itu adalah sebagian dari berita-berita ghaib yang Kami wahyukan kepada kamu (ya Muhammad); padahal kamu tidak hadir beserta mereka, ketika mereka melemparkan anak-anak panah mereka (untuk mengundi) siapa di antara mereka yang akan memelihara Maryam. Dan kamu tidak hadir di sisi mereka ketika mereka bersengketa.”

Dikatakannya pula, “Dalam Kitab Injil, jika kita ingin lebih mengetahui sebuah cerita atau mengkaji permasalahan, seringkali kita tidak mendapatkan jawabannya di kitab itu dan bahkan kita harus merujuk sumber-sumber referensi lainnya. Sementara Al-Quran menyatakan, jika seseorang ragu akan kebenaran yang disampaikannya, maka Al Quran sendiri yang akan menjawabnya. Namun, setelah saya mempelajari kitab ini secara detail, saya menyimpulkan bahwa tak seorangpun dapat menanggapi tantangan Al-Quran ini, karena pada prinsipnya, informasi-informasi dalam Kitab ini mengungkap peristiwa masa lalu, masa kini, dan masa mendatang.”

Pada tahun 1977, Miller terlibat debat terbuka dengan penceramah Islam terkenal pakar Kristologi; Ahmad Deedat (gurunya DR Zakir Naik).

Logikanya jelas dan pembenarannya tampak berdasarkan niat baik untuk mencapai kebenaran tanpa kebanggaan beragama atau prasangka buruk. Banyak orang yang kemudian memperkirakan bahwa ia akan segera memeluk Islam setelah debat itu.

Pada tahun 1978 Miller memutuskan memeluk Islam dan mengganti namanya menjadi Abdul Ahad Omar. Dia bekerja selama beberapa tahun di Universitas Minyak & Mineral di Saudi Arabia dan kemudian mengabdikan hidupnya untuk da’wah melalui program TV dan ceramah-ceramah umum tentang Islam.

Pesan Dr. Gary Miller kepada umat Muslim:

“Wahai ummat Islam, kalian tak mengetahui betapa Allah Subhanahu wa ta’ala telah melimpahkan kemuliaan kepada kalian, yang tak dimiliki oleh agama-agama lain. Untuk itu, bersyukurlah karena kalian telah menjadi muslim. Berpikirlah mendalam untuk mengungkap kebenaran-kebenaran yang indah dalam Al-Quran. Saya mempelajari Al-Quran secara mendalam, dan kitab inilah yang menyebabkanku mendapatkan hidayah Ilahi.”
